Story
Meet Deacon… This 1-year-old German Shepherd / Belgian Malinois mix is incredibly smart, deeply loyal, and still learning that the world is a safe place. When Deacon first arrived as an owner surrender, everything felt overwhelming—and he showed it. Fear was his first response. But underneath that fear? There’s a truly good boy who just needs time, patience, and the right person to believe in him.Deacon’s past hasn’t been perfect. After a frightening incident involving a man, he developed some understandable sensitivities—especially around men and things like hats. Because of that, he can be skittish and unsure in new situations. Loud noises, unfamiliar environments, or too much pressure too fast can make him nervous. But when you give him space and let him come to you? That’s when you start to see him soften. With his trusted people, Deacon is a completely different dog. He’s affectionate, engaged, and eager to connect. He warms up faster when he sees his person interacting comfortably with someone new—he takes his cues from you. Once you’re “his,” you’re in his circle for good. And let’s talk about his brain… because this boy is SMART. He already knows an impressive list of commands: sit, wait, down, shake, spin, twirl, roll over, heel, middle, orbit, leave it, target—and more. His favorite game? “Hop up!”—he’ll proudly jump onto objects to show off his skills. Training has been a huge confidence builder for him, and he thrives when given structure and clear communication. He’s fully potty trained, crate trained (“go to jail” is his cue ), and walks nicely on a gentle leader. He enjoys hikes, loves swimming, and will happily stick close to his person—especially if you remind him with an “easy.”Deacon has done well with children in his previous home and has lived around other dogs. He tends to do best with dogs his size or larger (no small dogs under 20 lbs, as he can get a little too excited). He’s more comfortable with male dogs and can be a bit intrusive with females, so proper introductions and guidance are important. He’s not food or toy aggressive, has never shown territorial behaviors, and when faced with conflict from other dogs in the past, he chose to retreat rather than escalate. That tells you a lot about his heart.Deacon is also muzzle trained (“nose”) and tolerates grooming well with people he trusts. Like many sensitive dogs, he prefers a calm, patient approach—especially for things like nail trims. He’s stil
