Story
Mackinaw Have you ever watched the TV show, “The Incredible Dr. Pol”? Well, my foster mom has been binge watching the show and trying to figure out a name for me and since the show is based in Michigan, she came up with my name, which is Mackinaw. It means ‘large turtle’ in the Ojibwa language, one of the Indian tribes in the area. I don’t think I look like a large turtle but whatever…. I am probably a Bernese Mountain Dog mix of some sort, and I am very loveable and sweet. I was found in the middle of the road and my foster mom was concerned that I was thrown from a car because I was not using my left rear leg as well as I was using the right one. But after some crate rest for a week and a visit to the vet to get an exam and some x-rays done, I am happy to say that nothing is broken and I am using my legs like I am supposed to now. Very good news! I will probably be a large medium or a small large size, if that makes sense. About 50-60 pounds or so. But since my breed is based on my handsomely good looks, it is hard to tell how big I will be when I grow up. And my breed is just a guess anyhow, only a DNA test will tell for sure, but I am 100% purebred lover boy. I was born about the third of November of 2025 and will be available for my new forever home after I get fixed in January 2026. Adoption fee in Texas is $250. Out of State adoption fee is $550 with transport and fuel surcharge.

Story
Baby Cakes is currently in a rescue in Oklahoma. We are looking for a home in a state where people treat their animals well. She has to be prepaid and picked up directly from transport near one of the cities listed at the bottom. If things don't work out for some reason, which rarely ever happens, she will go back to Oklahoma on our next transport until a new home is found. -Baby Cakes came in with five siblings after being abandoned in the woods in late February/early March 2025. All of her siblings have been adopted and are thriving in their new homes. -She is a special case that will need a loving, very patient home. She is very shy and needs to feel safe and loved. You can see her disposition in the YouTube video attached. -Just turned 1 year old (January 1st) -Approximately 50-55 pounds -DNA testing shows she is 74% Great Pyrenees/18% Miniature Australian Shepherd/8% Boxer -Does great with other dogs large and small, would probably help her come out of her shell more. Small, yappy dogs stress her out. -Would do well with one-on-one attention -Best environment would be a quiet home. If there are children in the home, they need to be over 14 years old or so. -Needs an elevated bed or soft bed to lay on -Would need a fenced yard since she would be a flight risk (at least in the beginning when she's learning to trust her new family). Watch her video: https://youtube.com/shorts/cRBr78S6TkM See the rescue video when her litter was found: https://www.facebook.com/61556973118844/videos/641365195044815 Baby Cakes is spayed, vaccinated (Rabies, DHLPPx3, Bordetella), has been dewormed and a fecal test, and on monthly flea/tick/HW prevention. Health certificate and exam will be performed less than 10 days prior to transport. Adoption fee is $600, this is including all vetting above and transport cost. Story
Gorgeous CUDDLES was surrendered with his Mom Ruby and his younger sibling Princess and they all look to be some kind of gorgeous Great Pyrenees mix with fluffy coats. Cuddles was definitely the most nervous and shy of the three, but has done well with a decompression quiet time to relax from his change in circumstances. All dogs need that to some degree with big changes, but some just need a little more patience. He's just 9 months old and is now fully vetted. Looking for a new best friend and have some patience? Cuddles might be your guy! He's just 40 lbs and should be getting closer to full-grown. He'd do well with another confident dog in the home. (Approx DOB 3/10/25) 👉 Adoption fee INCLUDES: all vetting to age (including deworming, flea & tick etc), spay/neuter and microchip (if the dog is under 6 months, alter and chip will occur after they're 6 months, covered in full at our clinic or reimbursed partially at a vet of your choosing). If the dog is older than 6 months and not yet altered, we will schedule ASAP (normally within 30 days) at our clinic . We also provide as an incentive a $60 rebate for completion of positive-based training classes. Adoption also includes lifetime support of the rescue. 💜 Please click PURPLE BUTTON above or go to www.secondhanddogrescue.com/apply to apply! ✍ APPLICATION PROCESSING: We do most application processing virtually and dog meets will be individually by appointment with ONLY APPROVED APPLICANTS. We are not a shelter and are completely volunteer foster-based, so there is no central place to come see all of the dogs available. 📌IMPORTANT NOTES: ** Housetraining with rescues is sometimes a work in progress and even if a dog is 100% in a foster's home, it should be expected there will be an adjustment period as a dog adapts to a new environment. This is even more true if the dog has not by chance had their altering appointment at time of adoption. ** Also, we highly recommend some form of 2-week shutdown and decompression for dogs going to a new home for best results. --> Lastly, breed guesses in rescue are just that (GUESSES!!) 99.9% of the time. We do not do DNA testing and our breed guesses are based on appearance and sometimes other traits, but we know the dog breed guessing game is a fool's errand even for those with LOTS of experience. 🗺 ADOPTION AREA: several hour radius of Rochester, NY (Canada within 3 hours IS allowed, except that young puppies need to be old enough to have gotten their rabies vaccination to cross the border - usually around 16 weeks)
