Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.River is a large, lanky female hound mix who was found running loose. She was held for the legal stray hold and no one claimed her. We do think she was part of a litter of hound pups that came through our shelter in February 2024 as she looks exactly like many of them and we know we never received all of those puppies. This lets us know that she is a 2 year old bluetick coonhound/Great Dane mix. River has been vet checked and spayed and her fee is $150. Hounds. Ya gotta love'em! They're stubborn, fun loving, and ruled by their noses and the scents on the breeze. River is energetic, strong, and does like to push the boundaries. She's also extremely happy and loving. She will require a secure environment and a lot of exercise. At this time, we do think she'd do best as the only pet in the home, at least until she gets some good training and socialization. She definitely needs some basic training and would do best in a home without little kids, due to her size and somewhat clumsy nature. River will definitely be a loyal and happy companion for someone. She loves to give hugs. This gal has spent too much time at the shelter and is more than ready to head to a new home! NOTE:  Adoptions are done via private appointment once an application has been completed and approved. Applications must be submitted at our website, mchs.rescuegroups.org. We are located at 101 22nd St. SE in Austin, right next to the airport. It's exit 180B off of I-90, right off of 218 South. We do require that potential adopters be at least 21 years old and that any resident dogs be up to date on vaccinations, heartworm testing/preventatives, and spayed or neutered.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.February 23, 2026, 12:11 pm

Story
Name: Russ Age: 7 years   Gender: male Breed: Bluetick Coonhound Weight: 78 lbs Dog friendly: Yes Cat friendly: No cats, please Child friendly: Yes, older children, please House trained: Yes Crate trained:  Yes Energy level: moderate Temperament: calm, curious, loving, smart, independent Requirement: Not rental appropriate Adoption Fee: $250+tax To adopt, go to: www.mendingspirits.org/apply-to-adopt.html   Meet Russ – The Loyal Heart Who’s Ready to Come Home for Good Some dogs bounce into your life like fireworks. Russ is different. He’s the steady flame—the quiet presence at your feet, the soft sigh from the couch, the gentle eyes that say, “I’m just happy to be here with you.” And more than anything, he’s hoping his next home will be his forever one. Russ is a calm, soulful hound with that classic, easygoing charm. He settles naturally into a routine and finds joy in life’s simple things: long walks, sunny nap spots, and being near his people. He’s the kind of dog who makes a house feel warmer just by being in it. He has been deeply loved. Originally adopted from Mending Spirits at age two, Russ spent several wonderful years with a family who adored him. When they were forced to move to housing that didn’t allow dogs, they made the heartbreaking decision to help him find a safe new landing place. Now, Russ is ready to start his next chapter—with someone who can promise him forever. In the home, Russ is a dream. He’s fully potty trained, well-mannered, and trustworthy whether he’s relaxing in his crate or enjoying free roam of the house. He knows his basic commands and listens well—though true to his hound nature, he sometimes likes to think things over first. That little streak of stubbornness? It just makes him more endearing. He’s generally quiet, saving his voice for when he wants to come back inside and, for reasons only he understands, during car rides. He loves getting outside and would thrive with a family who enjoys longer walks where he can stretch his legs and follow his nose. Russ does well with other dogs, though he prefers to keep his food and treats to himself—fair enough! Because he has a strong prey drive, he wouldn’t be a good fit for a home with cats or small animals. If you’re looking for a steady, affectionate companion who is past the puppy chaos but still full of life, love, and loyalty, Russ is waiting. About Me (From Russ) Hi, I’m Russ—though if you’re impressed by how handsome I am, you can call me Russell. I’m a laid-back guy who believes in enjoying the good things: long walks, cozy naps, and being close to my people. I’m house-trained, polite, and trustworthy when left alone. I know my basic commands and I try my best—sometimes I just need a second to think about it (hound logic). I like other dogs just fine, but I prefer not to share my food or treats. Those are special to me. I also have a strong chase instinct, so cats and small critters wouldn’t be the best roommates. If you have older, respectful kids and a love for long walks with plenty of sniffing breaks, we might be perfect together. Mostly, I’m just looking for a calm, loving home where I can finally stay forever. Could that be with you?     February 25, 2026, 7:19 pm
