Story
4-1-24: Updated Pics! FINNIGAN is a tall, lanky, sweet, silly, affectionate, sociable young man! He has come so far and loves to learn and make his humans happy! FINNIGAN's STORY: He was a small, very young puppy who was rescued from a person in a superstore parking lot in July 2023 who was giving away a litter of 6 week old puppies knowing some of them were born deaf or blind because " the parents are". Being told he was deaf, we quickly scooped him up. (His estimated date of birth is 5-14-23) FINNIGAN is tall and lanky! Looking at him, he looks like a smaller Dane with a cute turned up American Bulldog nose. 11/20/23: MY NAME IS FINNIGAN! I am a 6 month old American Bulldog "one-of-a-kind" boy! Being DEAF makes me an extra special one of a kind! I am fully vaccinated, neutered, leash trained, I ride really well in the Fur Runner, I know hand signals, doggy door trained, "mostly" house trained (I'm going with the "I forgot" excuse! and I'm extra special because I'm deaf! I love all the sanctuary doggies here who are all different sizes and ages--even big and medium puppies to dig holes and chase; special doggies with 2 legs, 3 legs, 4 legs, or who can't see and who also can't hear like me! But no cats here, so no guarantees, and children must be over 7 years old and have been taught to respect a dog's space, body, area where and when being fed and the dog's safety (particularly a deaf dog). Life is great here on the dusty, dirty little Rescue Ranch, but I would really love to live in a "furever" home with an active family and a furry buddy around my size who also loves to playI (but I need to limit my time in the direct sun because of my sensitive skin pigment and eyes---spf 100000 sunscreen should work!). My all time favorite thing is to play in water, in a baby pool, or just lay in it with my toys! I get soo excited!! I also l love to go for walks, car rides, play with toys, chase and be chased, wrestle, dig holes and lay in them (they taught me that skill) and sleep with other doggies. I love companionship -- both hooman and dawg! P.S. My favorite treats are organic baby carrots, apple chunks and (xylitol free) peanut butter, and I also love raw vegetables and pumpkin! Please share my pics and my adoptapet link so that more people in the right "hearing" home can fall in love with me! (Please note PDR's specific Adoption Requirements: Because Finnigan is deaf, for his safety, he must live in a home environment that includes a hearing adult. to alert him to a dangerous situation or or to get his attention. We also recommend a vibrating collar -- we will not accept him wearing an electric collar and if we are alerted to him wearing one, we will confiscate him immediately. Finnigan may never be walked or run, hiking, etc. unleashed and must be attached to a hearing adult at all times. Finnigan may not be left unattended alone or with any other dog or child in a yard or any environment. (Please refer to the Adoption Application/Agreement). I live at Puppy Dog Ranch Rescue and Sanctuary in Las Cruces, New Mexico. PDR promotes 3 days sleepovers to pre-approved adopters and does not ship, transport or fly our doggies. PDR believes making the trip here and spending time with the doggie is just the beginning of a 15 year commitment. If you have questions, would like an adoption application, etc. please ask Laurie! Thanks for your time, hoomans! Woof! 🐾💗 Please email us with questions or for an adoption application/requirements. We maintain our 99% adoption success rate by upholding our high adoption standards. We do not transport and feel a lifetime commitment begins with making the trip to us to meet and spend time him. We require a fully fenced, secure yard (inspection required), must meet all family members and pets (all must be current on vaccinations and spayed/neutered). FINN must not spend more than 1-2 hours a day in direct sunlight and early mornings and early evenings are best. We do not allow any adopted dog to be tethered, chained, or kept outside or inside unattended. He must always be walked or run on leash (retractable leashes not allowed) when not in a secured fenced yard. Adopter must provide 2 references plus vet reference. Additional requirements and questions are on the application. WE ENCOURAGE A 3-5 DAY SLEEPOVER FOR PRE-APPROVED ADOPTERS! An Important Note regarding adopting a DEAF DOG: We require meet and greets with all other dogs and children living in your home to spend that time with the adoptable dog you are interested in learning about at our rescue/sanctuary (Las Cruces or Arenas Valley, NM) as part of the adoption process. Please note also, that if you are preparing for a sleepover, that a deaf dog should never be fed or left unsupervised with toys or treats with another dog. A deaf dog cannot hear warning signs from other dogs so if a deaf dog were to go home with your other pet(s) it is imperative that the adopter is responsible (and uses common sense) and makes necessary arrangements to feed separately. We encourage an adopter to learn more about caring for, training and living with deaf dogs, because they will add so much love and laughter to your family, plus, they rock! (We Recommend: www.deafdogsrock.com/resources) 9/29, 9/17 and 8/19 UPDATES: AGE AND WEIGHT HAVE BEEN EDITED AS FINNIGAN grows!! He loves to go for car rides (not in a kennel or crate but harnessed in). He adheres to a schedule here but as he grows he wants to spend more time at night sleeping and napping with the pack, of which he is allowed to until he decides to explore "things" throughout the house while they're sleeping. FINN continues his hand signal training, doggy door training is complete, if the door is locked, or if he wants out of his play pen area or go inside or outside to go to the bathroom, he will bark and since I am also trained (ha ha) I'll let him out, praise him and then put him right back. leash training, house training and socializing and playing with all the other special needs and senior doggies. FINNIGAN HAS BEEN NEUTERED AND IS FULLY VACCINATED. He lives with several special needs, 2 legged, 3 legged, blind, deaf and senior dogs of all sizes. NOTE: FINNGAN is a puppy so he doesn't realize that he gets a little rough while playing with small dogs, so it's best that he lives in a home without small dogs. I am looking into a vibrating collar (NOT a shock collar and not used for punishment) to train work together to train him with redirection. We have kept Finnigan separated from a smallies (1-3 pounds) because he is a puppy , rambunctious when he plays and he may hurt them unintentionally. He does play with our 2 legged smallie, who can hold his own and will "school" Finnigan if he gets too rough playing, ha ha. We cannot alert him if he can't see or hear them. We are considering a vibrating collar (NOT a shock collar) only to get his attention to teach him to always keep a human in eyesight or come to them immediately, for his own safety, since he cannot be called back/away/ etc. if he doesn't see us. He knows his hand signals. 10/15: FINN received his 3nd round of shots -- DHPP, Parvo and Rabies today! 8/10 UPDATE: FINN will receive his 2nd round of puppy shots and a full vet exam tomorrow 8/11. This little boy is very alert to his surroundings and continues hand signal training, although all he wants to do is play with the other puppies (unfortunately no physical contact for another 2 weeks), but he is content playing with his toys and chewies by himself. He is great during our nighly thunder and lightning storms, though was awakened like the rest of us in the middle of the night by a huge clap of thunder very nearby. With some reassurance and "it's ok" time, he settled back in to his kennel and play area. He does not look like he will be a large doggie when full grown. Probably around 40-45 lbs. tops. He is growing more leggy than stocky and his face has that slightly turned up nose like an ABD! He is kept out of the direct sun for obvious health reasons, so his play time and time in the puppy pool during this 100 degree summer are from 6:30-8:30 am and 6:30-8 pm. YES, HE LOVES WATER!! 7-23-23 -- INTRO: We brought FINN in to our small Rescue on 7-21-23, after being fostered for 2 weeks. FINN is a 9 week old DEAF pup who was part of a litter at 7 WEEKS OLD who were being given away to strangers (including a homeless person) in a big store parking lot by the irresponsible owner who allows her unaltered male and female dogs do what dogs do when given the opportunity! FINN's mother is blind, so FINN's deafness is caused by a recessive gene that continues through the blood line with every mating. FINN received his first vet check, his first round of puppy shots, and has been given his 3 month dose for flea/tics/heartworm. He will be due for his second round of vaccs in 3 weeks (2nd week in August). 7/23/23 -- LEASH TRAINING AND SIGN/SIGNALS HAVE BEGUN!! Puppy Dog Ranch requires the adopted puppy to be neutered at 4-5 months and spayed at 5-7 months. We also require adopter(s) to have an adequately fenced yard with locking gates and any and all other pets must be current on vaccinations and spayed/neutered. We do not transport our dogs and puppies. Approved Adopters must make the trip. We promote a sleepover with pre-approved adopters, prior to adoption. Please contact us if you would like an Adoption Application or if you have questions! Thank you!
