Story
Hello, my name is Duke, and I’m 2 ½ years young! I’m a lean guy with a long nose, long legs, and a tail that curls. I might look big in pictures, but I’m actually under 30 pounds and fully grown—such a great, manageable size! My foster mom says I look a bit like a small shepherd, but I’m definitely a unique mix of several breeds. If you're curious, some people say I resemble a Carolina Dog—feel free to Google it! Others even wonder if I might have a bit of Chihuahua in me. All I know is, I'm 100% lovable.
I came to SHDR after my previous family, who adopted me as a puppy, surrendered me to a shelter. They said they didn’t have time for me anymore. I don’t quite understand it—I’m active and playful, but not demanding.
When we first meet, I may be a little cautious. But give me a minute and a few training treats, and you’ll see my affectionate side. Once I trust you, I’ll be rolling over for belly rubs, giving kisses, and snuggling with my head in your lap.
I’m house trained and will go to the door or pace to let you know I need to go out. I have a lot of youthful energy and love to run and play, so I’d do best in a home with a fenced yard where I can zoom around. A 5-foot fence would be ideal because I can jump pretty high! I also enjoy walks and do well on a leash—especially with a harness. I might pull if I see a squirrel or get startled by loud noises, but I’m learning.
I love toys—especially balls and Nylabones. Sometimes I entertain myself, sometimes I play fetch, and sometimes I just zoom around. Durable toys are best, though, because I tend to shred stuffies!
I do get a little anxious when my people leave, and SUPER excited when they come back. That’s why I’d love an active family where someone is home most of the time. I’d be a perfect companion for someone who works from home—I’ll snooze while you work, and after some playtime, I’m happy to curl up beside you.
In my previous home, I lived with kids and a cat. My foster home has teens and two other dogs. I’ve done great with the teens and had gentle interactions with dog-savvy kids as young as 5. I do get excited and sometimes jump up, so slightly older or confident kids would be best. I got along with the two senior dogs in my foster home, though one wasn’t a fan of my energy. I’d do well as your only dog or with a playful companion. I reportedly did fine with the cat in my first home, though I may be tempted to chase due to my interest in squirrels.
I’m sweet, loyal, and ready to be part of a family again. My foster mom says any home would be lucky to have me. I promise to love you with my whole heart and be by your side always.
Will you give me my forever home?
XOXO,
Duke
