Story
Meet Pancake! Pancake is a sweet, curious pup who just wants love and companionship from her humans. Once found alone, shivering under a tree, she’s now thriving in her foster home and learning how to navigate the world with confidence. This smart and active girl loves to keep both her mind and body busy. She already knows sit, lay down, and boop (touching your hand with her nose!) and is doing great with potty training through positive reinforcement—especially when treats are involved! Pancake can be a little pushy with other dogs, so she’d do best with a confident, patient furry sibling to show her the ropes. She’s kennel-trained, enjoys enrichment toys before bedtime, and loves belly rubs, couch snuggles, and trying new treats—blueberries, mango, and chicken are her favorites! She’s still learning to play with kids and manage her excitement during playtime and meals, but she’s just a baby with so much potential. At around 3–4 months old, Pancake has a lifetime ahead to grow, learn, and love. Adopt Pancake, and you’ll gain a devoted, playful, and loving best friend for life.

Story
Hey there, I'm Scrabble, and if you're reading this, it means I'm still searching for my forever home – a fact I'm trying not to take personally! But hey, while I'm waiting, let me tell you a little bit about myself, and maybe even inspire you to take me out on a Daycation through CARE! Recently, I went on a Daycation to Pride STL with a couple of awesome people, and I have to say, I was a superstar! I'm told I gave immediate full-body wiggles to a new friend I met, which just goes to show how much love I have to give. We even stopped at a store, where I discovered I'm not the biggest fan of moving wheels like bikes or scooters. But good news: I'm super easily redirected, and I got much better as the day went on! So, with a little decompression in a new home, I bet I'll be cruising alongside you in no time. At Pride, I was on my best behavior. Can you believe I actually wanted to stay in line at one point? I got so much attention because, let's be real, I'm a looker! But even with all the compliments, I'm still patiently waiting for my family. So, what else should you know about me? Well, I'm a cuddly boy who loves to snuggle up. I'm working on being fully potty trained, but I'm already a pro at my crate – it's my cozy den! On walks, I can get a little excited and tug, but I'm diligently practicing my "sit" and "paw" commands, and I'm super motivated by treats (hint, hint!). I'm friendly with kids and other dogs (with slow introductions, of course, as I can be a bit dominant at first). I do have a little bit of reactivity with adult males, but with patience and understanding, I'm confident I can overcome this. The folks at the shelter are amazing and can tell you all about CARE's Daycation program – it's free, they provide everything you need, and it's a fantastic way for us to get to know each other outside of the shelter. So, what do you say? Ready to meet your new best friend? Come on down to CARE and ask for Scrabble – I promise you won't regret it!

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Shuggie is an 8-year old Catahoula/Blue Heeler cross, who has lived with his current family since he was a puppy; now, however, his owners are relocating in another country in order to care for an elderly relative, and they prefer to find Shuggie a new home rather than move him around the world. Shuggie is a sweet dog and although he has interacted well with children in the past, he has not lived with children and he would do best in an adult home.  He also is too interested in cats and should not be asked to live with them.  He has lived with other dogs and interacted well with them. Shuggie has a bite history, which his owners say resulted from a utility worker's reaching a hand over the fence into Shuggie's yard, which took the dog by surprise.  However, there is far more to Shuggie than that one incident, and his owners say this about him: Shuggie is a high-energy, intelligent, and deeply loyal companion who's looking for his perfect match. This food-motivated pup loves nothing more than an active adventure whether it's hiking trails, long walks, or chasing after his favorite tennis balls! While Shuggie is incredibly loving, he takes time to warm up to new people and requires a patient approach to building trust. He's made tremendous progress through extensive training and responds well to positive reinforcement and structured introductions. To learn more about Shuggie or to arrange to meet him, please contact his owners at  laura.e.cleary@gmail.comVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.July 24, 2025, 7:08 pm

Story
Good day! I'm Tiara! My sister and I were adopted together when we were little, but somehow we found ourselves back out in the world and ended up as strays. I’m a mix of Catahoula Leopard Dog and German Shepherd — so I’ve got both smarts and style! I’m a sweet girl who gets along well with other dogs, and I’ve even been around chickens, turkeys, and goats with no trouble at all. I’d love a home where I can stretch my legs, run, play, and go on all sorts of adventures with my people. I'm super smart, a quick learner and I respond well to training. I just graduated a 7 week obidence training course. I'm also housebroken & I've lived in a home before and know the ropes. If you’re looking for a loyal, fun-loving friend who’s ready to make every day brighter, I think I might be the one for you! If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! All of our pets are neutered or spayed, have vaccinations appropriate for their age, treated with flea/tick/heartworm prevention, dewormed and dogs are also microchipped. #adoptdontshop ##1119139##

Story
I got Hank when he was a puppy from the shelter in Bloomington while I was in college. He is about a year and half old now (he will be 2 in March). Ideally Hank should be with someone who has a yard or land for him to explore. He is a high energy dog and loves to try to chase small animals like squirrels and rabbits. He’s a very loyal dog & protective of his owner & house. Some adjectives I would use to describe Hank are sweet, loving, funny, weird, anxious, protective, friendly, and loyal. Hank has some behavioral issues such as separation anxiety and some aggression towards other male dogs. He barks a lot when he is by himself because of his separation anxiety. This resulted in many noise complaints at my apartment. I would recommend whoever is interested in adopting Hank either works remote or has a house where noise complaints aren’t as much of an issue & can cage-train him. The adoption fee includes a cage, food, a dog bed, & his toys. He is up to date on all vaccines/neutered
