Story
Hi… my name is Kkamang 🖤 I’m a 1 year and 6 month old Chihuahua mix boy, just 5kg (11 lbs) — small enough to fit in your arms, and hoping to fit in your heart too. I was rescued from a dog meat farm. Since the day I was born, I didn’t know what it felt like to have someone call my name. No warm arms. No soft whispers. I wasn’t a “someone” — I was just… there. Inside a metal cage, each day wasn’t about learning. It was about enduring. I learned how to be quiet. How to wait. How to survive. So when I first meet someone new, I pause for a moment. It doesn’t mean “go away.” It means, “Is it really safe this time?” But if you offer me a gentle voice… a small treat… a little patience, my tiny wall falls very quickly. Because the truth is — I like people. I always have. Once I know you, I’m much more affectionate than you’d expect. I’ll press my little body right next to you, sit close, and look into your eyes as if I’m asking for love. No one ever taught me how to be loved, but somehow, I know how to want it. I get along quietly and peacefully with other dogs too. I don’t cause trouble. I know how to share space and not feel lonely. Home life, though… that will be new for me. A house. Daily routines. Rules about where to potty. Time spent alone. I may make mistakes. I may be clumsy at first. But those moments won’t be because I’m lacking — they’ll simply be signs of a life I was never given the chance to learn. Please wait for me. Please teach me slowly. If you do, I will trust you with my whole heart. I will become a deeply loving, loyal little family member who believes completely in my person. I was born just to survive. Now, I want to live. I want a life where I don’t fear being sent back to a cage. A life where I don’t worry about being abandoned again. A life where someone calls my name every day. That’s why I’m looking for a family who will be patient as I learn home life step by step, who will use gentle voices instead of force, and who will promise that I will never return to a cage again. Will you be my very first family? Please let the rest of my life be remembered not for sadness — but for love. 🖤🐾

Story
Milly is an 8-year-old Chihuahua with a heart full of love, just waiting to be unlocked. This little lady came into our care after the heartbreaking passing of her beloved owner. While she's been through a lot of change recently, we're dedicated to finding her the perfect, loving home she deserves. In her previous life, Milly enjoyed the company of other small dogs, mostly Chihuahuas just like herself! She’s also good with cats. She's comfortable around canine companions her size, however, she didn’t receive much socialization outside her immediate pack and lacks experience in areas like leash walking. Since coming into care Milly has learned that peeing outside isn’t so bad so she is now house trained. Since joining our rescue Milly has been making strides adapting to wearing a harness and experiencing the simple pleasures of a walk, like sniffing the fresh grass beneath her little paws. Milly is searching for a special home, one with someone who understands the unique charm and quirks of the Chihuahua breed. She is best suited in a home with a single person or a quiet couple who can provide her with the individual attention and unwavering love she craves. Milly bonds deeply with her person and will be a loyal and affectionate companion. She is not suited for a busy home with children. It's important to remember that losing her owner has left Milly feeling scared and unsure. She needs a patient and understanding owner who will allow her the time and space to adjust to her new surroundings. She appreciates calm environments and a gentle approach as she learns to trust and feel secure again. Milly is a sweet and deserving girl who deserves to spend her golden years in a loving and supportive home. Important Considerations: Experience with Chihuahuas: Knowledge of the breed's specific needs and tendencies is a definite plus! Patience and Understanding: Milly needs time to adjust and build trust. Quiet Home Environment: A calm and predictable environment will help her feel safe and secure. Future Veterinary Care: Milly has had a full dental procedure, and she has some mineralization around her liver and bladder that requires more tests once she is more comfortable with being handled and going to the vet (SHE HATES VET APPOINTMENTS) This would be at the cost of her new family.

Story
Location: Parkland County (Edmonton Area) // Age: Rascal is 3 years, Cece is 13 // Sex: Neutered males // Energy level: Rascal is medium, Cece is low // Dogs: Yes // Cats: Yes // Kids: Yes // Meet Cece & Rascal 💛🐶 Double the love. Double the personality. Double the tail wags. Cece and Rascal are a devoted duo who balance each other in the sweetest way — like peanut butter and jelly, sunshine and shade, or naps and zoomies. 🐾 Cece – The Gentle Soul: Cece is the calmer half of this bonded pair. With his moderate-to-low energy, he’s happiest lounging nearby, quietly following you from room to room, or settling at the foot of your bed for the night. He walks beautifully on leash and enjoys stopping to sniff the world around him. Squirrels and birds are very interesting (and sometimes worth a bark!), but he doesn’t lunge — just observes with curiosity. He adores gentle affection, especially ear and neck scratches. Cece is easygoing, sweet, and happiest simply being close to his people. He may be partially deaf, but he watches closely and takes his cues from you — and from Rascal. He’s incredibly adaptable and thrives on routine. At night, he sleeps peacefully and is reliably house trained with regular outings. He’s an old soul who takes life in stride. 🐾 Rascal – The Spirited Sidekick: Rascal brings the sparkle! Moderately high energy, playful, and treat-motivated, he loves walks, jogs, toys, and interactive play. He’s smart, eager to learn, and very responsive — especially when snacks are involved. He’s affectionate and expressive — expect happy vocal greetings and full-body wiggles when you come home. Rascal thrives on connection and absolutely adores being involved in whatever you’re doing. If you sit down, he’s there. If you get up, he’s ready. If you leave the room, he’s checking in. And the sweetest part? If Rascal goes outside without Cece, he waits at the door for him. Their bond is undeniable and heart-melting. 🏡 Their Ideal Home: Cece and Rascal would love a family who appreciates both cozy downtime and playful energy. A fenced yard would be wonderful for Rascal to stretch his legs and show off his “spitfire” zoomies, while Cece supervises with calm approval. They’ve met other dogs and a cat respectfully, showing curiosity without issues. They are not resource guarders and happily share space, toys, and affection. They sleep through the night on their beds or the couch, free roam respectfully when left alone, and are generally very easy to care for. With regular bathroom breaks, they are reliably house trained. Because Cece can be sensitive around his back end (and will gently warn if something hurts), a family that is respectful of his space and mindful with handling would be ideal. Rascal can get playfully mouthy when excited but responds well to direction. 💛 Why You’ll Love Them: They are incredibly loving, affectionate, and loyal. They get excited for their walks. They nap like pros. They watch you like you’re their whole world. Together, they offer the perfect balance of calm companionship and playful joy. If you’re looking for two best friends who already love each other deeply and are ready to love you just as much, Cece and Rascal are waiting. 🐾Because some bonds are too special to break — and these two are meant to stay side by side. Story
Location: Edmonton, AB // Age: Approx 9 years // Sex: Neutered male // Energy Level: Low-Medium // Dogs: Yes // Cats: Untested but likley ok // Kids: Older, calm kids // 🐾Milo is a sweet little Chihuahua boy who proves that the best things really do come in small, cuddly packages. With his gentle nature and low energy level, Milo enjoys a relaxed lifestyle—short walks, cozy naps, and being as close to his people as possible. When he’s not curled up beside you, he has the cutest little spurts of energy where he’ll trot around happily before settling back in for another snooze. 🐾This affectionate senior absolutely adores people. He greets everyone like a long-lost friend and would happily spend his days following his person from room to room or wiggling his way into your lap for snuggles. 🐾Milo walks beautifully on leash and seems to already know his manners, often checking in with his handler and stopping when you stop. He also enjoys enrichment toys—especially hide-a-treat games (because snacks are one of his favorite things!). 🐾Like many small dogs, Milo is still working on his housetraining. He would do best in a home with easy, frequent access to the outdoors to help him succeed. Right now, his foster mom uses belly bands to help manage occasional accidents while he continues learning. Milo also tends to gobble his food and water, so he currently eats and drinks from slow feeders to keep things safe and comfortable. 🐾Milo gets along well with other dogs, though he can be a little protective of his people or food at first until he feels secure. With proper introductions and time to settle in, he should do well with a friendly canine companion. Cats would likely be fine, and due to his small size and gentle nature, he would do best in a home with older, calm children. 🐾This little senior deserves a home where he will be cherished, spoiled, and loved for the rest of his days. Milo has so much affection to give, and he’s ready to share it with a family who will adore having a loyal shadow and cuddle buddy by their side. 🐾If you’re looking for a calm, loving companion with a soft heart and a gentle soul, Milo might just be your perfect match. Story
Location: Crossfield, AB // Age: Approx 1 Year // Sex: Spayed Female // Size: Approx 20 lbs // Energy: Medium (with a splash of puppy zoomies!) // Dogs: Yes — playful friends are a must! // Cats: Yes -dog-savvy cats // Kids: Yes // Canela is as unique looking as she is sweet. This 20-lb cutie is just wrapping up her puppy phase, which means you get the best of both worlds: playful, bouncy fun *and* a smart, eager girl who is ready to learn. 💛 Canela **loves** other dogs and truly shines with a playful canine buddy. If there’s a dog in the home who enjoys romping, wrestling, and zooming around the yard, Canela will be in heaven. She gets along with all dogs but is very play-oriented, so a playful match is ideal. 💛 This smart cookie is very food motivated and eager to please, making her a dream for anyone who enjoys training. Puzzle toys, games, bones, and learning new things are right up her alley. She would thrive in a home that enjoys walks, enrichment, and keeping their dog’s mind busy. Once her needs are met, she’s perfectly happy to entertain herself with toys or curl up for a cozy nap beside you. 💛 She’s working on her house training and does not have accidents with consistent outings. She also is fairly comofrtable in her crate, sleeping through the night (with only a brief 15-minute bedtime protest to plead her case for more fun). She rides well in the car in her crate and likrd being outdoors—unless it’s too cold, because this little lady gets chilly easily! Canela would do best in a home with kids who understand her playful, zoomie energy. She takes direction beautifully and will be an absolute rockstar for a family who wants a fun, trainable, affectionate companion. She’s a bouncy, joyful girl who just needs a moment to feel comfortable — and once she does, her loving, cuddly personality shines. If you’re looking for a playful sidekick, a training partner, and a sweet cuddle buddy all in one adorable package, Canela might be your perfect match. 💛 If you're interested in meeting Canela, complete an application and our team will be in touch: https://www.ruffstartanimalrescue.com/dog-application-form

Story
Location: Didsbury, AB// Age: Approx 5 years// Size: Small// Sex: Neutred Male// Energy level: Low// Vaccines: Up to date// Dogs: Yes// Cats: Yes// Kids: Kids 15+// Toto has been in long-term foster care with our rescue’s founder for about two years, and during that time he has made incredible progress. When he first arrived, his foster couldn’t even come within a few feet of him for the first six months. With patience, love, and positive reinforcement, Toto has slowly learned that the world—and people—can be safe. Toto is still a very fearful boy, especially when it comes to physical touch. Most of the time he prefers to keep his distance, but when he does choose to snuggle, he shows so much love. In those moments, you can tell just how badly he wants to be cuddled and cherished, even if it’s scary for him. Recently, he’s even started sitting on his foster mom’s lap once in a while when he’s feeling brave. These tender milestones are proof of how far he’s come. Toto has also started exploring his backyard—something he couldn’t do before. He is a very routine-oriented boy who thrives on predictability and the security of knowing what to expect each day. He doesn’t have a mean bone in his body—he’s incredibly sweet and gentle. New people don’t seem to scare him as long as they give him space; from a distance, he seems perfectly content having humans around. While Toto isn’t comfortable going for walks and finds the leash and outside world overwhelming, he has recently allowed his harness and leash to be put on slowly if needed for a car ride. Getting in the car is tough, but once he’s in his foster family’s car or camper, curled up in his bed, he’s happy to be part of the adventure. He no longer needs his crate, either—another big step forward! Most nights, he sleeps in bed with his foster parents or in his dog bed nearby. Toto eats a special dehydrated food that works best for him since many of his teeth have been removed. One of his most endearing quirks is his pre- and post-meal “happy dance”—a little wiggle and shuffle that never fails to make his foster family smile. Toto’s progress may be slow and steady, but he is a completely different dog today than he was two years ago. He may always be a work in progress, and it’s possible he will remain a forever Ruff Start resident—but he is still adoptable to the right home. Toto needs: An adopter with experience working with very fearful or previously feral dogs. A quiet, predictable home with a fully fenced yard. A slow, patient transition into his new home. Someone who understands that Toto may never be a typical snuggly dog, but who will celebrate every small step forward. Toto is good with other dogs, respectful cats, and would do best in a calm home with no young children. What he needs most is safety, stability, and unconditional love. If you have the heart and patience to continue Toto’s journey and give him a safe place to land, he just might be the perfect match for you. If you think your home would be a good match for Toto, please complete an adoption application on our website and one of our team members will be in touch with you shortly via email to arrange a phone interview.

Story
🏠 Currently in a Toronto foster home Bori is a mature, gentle girl who spent a long time in a shelter before being rescued. She is the kind of dog whose presence is so quiet that you might not even notice she’s there— soft, calm, and unobtrusive. She rarely barks and enjoys simply staying close to her person. From the very first moment you meet her, she’s the kind of dog who makes you think, “I just want to hold her.” Bori’s personality is pure gentleness. She is calm, well-mannered, and never disruptive to the atmosphere of a home. She stays quietly by your side, which somehow makes you care for her even more, with a tender feeling in your heart. One important note: Bori tends to chase cats, so a home without cats would be best for her. In a new environment, she may have a few potty accidents at first due to nervousness. With a little time and patience, she will adjust and gradually settle in. Bori doesn’t ask for much. A quiet space, a patient person, and a family willing to spend calm, unhurried time together is all she needs. She isn’t overly affectionate or demanding, but just having her nearby is comforting in itself. That’s the kind of dog Bori is. She is no longer looking to be alone— she is waiting for a family who will stay quietly by her side, just as she will for them. 🐾🤍
