Story
We are now accepting applications on Diesel!   This little Diesel engine is 10 yrs old & 8 lbs.  Don't let his age fool you!  He is quite spry & runs around with dogs 1/2 his age just fine!  Diesel is a velcro dog & really just wants to be adored by his person all day long.  He is dog friendly but would also be fine as an only dog.  He can be cat tested if needed.  Diesel is doing fantastic with house training; he'd do best with a regular potty schedule.  There may be some potty accidents as he adjusts to your schedule but he wears belly bands like a champ!  He does fine in a crate as well.  We were told Diesel was around children in the past.  He can get nippy when he is scared so children 12+ who know to give him space when needed should be fine.  He will need slow intros to new people. Diesel walks well on a leash.  He does not need a fenced in yard but should always be kept on a leash when outside.  Diesel is a happy & healthy boy with a lot of love to give!  If you love chihuahuas as much as I do, he will be a great addition to your family.  Applications to adopt are at www.trackingintheshadows.com.  Please live within 1 hour of Elkhart, Indiana.  Diesel's adoption fee is $150.  He is fully vetted for 1 year, neutered, microchipped, & on monthly preventatives.  He also recently had a dental with 15 extractions so keeping up on his dental hygiene is a must. Once approved, we will set up a day/time for you to meet Diesel.  Please be ready to take him home within 1-3 days after application approval. *We do not accept electric/underground fences. All dogs & cats in the home must be spayed/neutered & up to date on core vaccines & preventatives in order for your application to be approved.* ##2679072##

Story
Chico, 10lbs, Male Chihuahua mix, may only love one person — but he will love them with his whole heart. When Chico first came into rescue he was extremely overweight and struggling to move comfortably. He couldn’t navigate stairs, couldn’t really play, and life had become very small for him. Since then, his foster family has taken his health journey seriously and Chico has already made incredible progress. He’s now navigating stairs, playing with toys, loves walkies and showing the joyful personality that was hiding underneath all that extra weight. Chico forms a deep bond with his person and becomes a loyal little shadow. Once Chico decides you are his human, he will happily follow you from room to room, celebrate your return home with enthusiastic zoomies, and settle in beside you for cozy evenings. His favorite place in the house is the couch (as you can see in his photos). Like many Chihuahuas, Chico can be cautious and a little grumpy with new people at first. With patience and time, Chico forms an incredibly strong connection and becomes deeply devoted to his person. Being chosen by Chico is something special — once he trusts you, he will shower you with the love only a tiny, loyal Chihuahua can give. Chico does well with other dogs but should not live in a home with cats. Chico does not require a fenced yard, but he should always be leash-walked outside. Don’t let his short legs fool you — Chico is quick and has shown a bit of an escape artist streak in play yards. Chico will crate for short periods of time, though it isn’t his favorite. In his foster home Chico is typically left out during the day and has very few accidents. Like many small dogs, Chico does best with a consistent potty routine and regular opportunities to go outside. Chico would thrive in a home where his person is around often and can enjoy the companionship of a devoted little sidekick. Chico at a glance • Chico, 10lbs, Male Chihuahua mix• Approximately 10–12 years old• Adoption fee: $150• Neutered and microchipped• Fully vetted for one year• Recently had a dental• Good with other dogs• No cats Once approved, we will schedule a meet-and-greet. Approved adopters should be prepared to bring Chico home within 1–3 days of approval. Adopters must live within 1 hour of Elkhart, IN. Story
Rory is looking for a home!   Rory is one of the girls we trapped ten days ago. She’s adjusted well here and loves to play with all the dogs.  We did separate her from the other dog because they were more fearful about new experiences together.  Rory has been gaining confidence here with my dogs and has been a wonderful foster girl. In her free time you can find her playing with the other dogs, chewing on a bone or snoozing away in your lap.    Rory would do well in a fairly quiet household who will give her time to adjust to new people. She also would greatly benefit from some confidence courses.   I would say no kiddos for her unless you allow for a several day introduction.  I estimate her to be 6 months old and about 16 lbs. This girl also has built in springs in her legs.     Rory is still grasping the concept of house training and will need to be watched closely.  She is high energy so be ready to give her lots of attention!  She will be ready to go home this weekend with an approved application.   Www.trackingintheshadows.com to apply. ##2744713##

Story
This is my girl Roxy, all I remember about her old home was that she was bred to be a chug mix but turned out to be more Chihuahua than pug and was going to be discarded until I adopted her. She’s about 9 years old. Unfortunately, My family and I have to move out and the place we’re going does not allow pets. My little niece has taken care of her more than I could with my mental health and I have registered my two cats as ESA’s, but I would love for my girl to have a good home, she loves my niece who is also 9 years old, it is very difficult for her to let go. Roxy needs to be very loved so she could also get through being without my niece, she barks a lot at strangers but also warms up with treats and assuring words. The weight of moving and letting go of my dog who has grown up with me hasn’t hit yet. I just know that I’d feel a little bit better knowing she has a good person to take care of her. 🥲❤️

Story
Caleb is a chihuahua mix who is a little timid at first, but warms up with some time. He is currently in a foster home with other dogs. He is a little timid and scared when meeting new dogs, but with a litlte time adjusts just fine. He is fostered with his friend Sugar. He does love Sugar and follows her around (she is the boss), but they do not have to be adopted together. He is also good with kids. Once he knows you are a friend he LOVES belly rubs. As he settles in to his new foster home, he is getting more confident and is working on mastering going outside consistently. He does very well and is pad trained for inside, but is almost a pro at outside too. As he slowing adjusts to his new surrounding he is getting more confident and playful. he is starting to do zoomies and dances for his dinner. If you are looking for a small, sweet dog that can hang with other dogs and kids, Caleb would be a great match for you. ##2649317##

Story
LEONARDIn Foster HomeDo you have room in your heart for a special-needs dog? We can tell from the way he bobs his head when stressed and circles and spins when he is excited that he has something unique going on in his little head. If we had to guess his breed, we think a terrier mix with maybe some Boston terrier, chihuahua or French bulldog in there. Leonard loves the company of other dogs and would make a great playmate for a dog who enjoys a good game of chase or wrestling. He really needs another dog around in order to be happy. Leonard has come a long way toward being potty trained, given ample opportunities to go outdoors. He also is using potty pads indoors. He has a beautiful shiny blue coat which makes him stand out from the pack. He likes to hang out with the people without having to sit on a lap or be cuddled too much. He seems to be mesmerized by things daily and is always cocking his head in the cutest way. His foster mom works from home and he LOVES that. If you have dreams of him being an obedience champion, you’ll have to let those go. He really is a very simple fella who just wants a good home with a playful dog or two and some people who will be around a lot and let him be who he is. DOB 3/15/22 18 PoundsI'm waiting for a home to call my own. email webmaster@petrefuge.com to learn more about me or fill out an application at https://www.petrefuge.com/adoptPet Refuge was formed in 1978 to help with cats and dogs in need of homes.
