Story
Umeboshi (“Ume”) is a 4 y/o spayed female Chow/Husky/Pit mix who is affectionate, playful, athletic, expressive, and deeply attached to her people. She loves running, exploring, sniffing, playing with our other dog, and food enrichment. At home, she is typically relaxed and independent, but can be excited when you come home and will jump, chortle, and nip, but has been improving with training.Ume has made progress with positive-reinforcement training and leash walking, though she is very strong and needs an experienced and physically capable handler to continue her training. Ume has a very strong prey drive towards squirrels, rabbits, unknown cats, and other small animals. She does well with our cat in the house.Ume is wary of strangers and unfamiliar environments, so she needs patience and gentleness to become comfortable with new surroundings. She is high energy and needs daily exercise. Seeking experienced, active home with secure spaces to run and explore every day.

Story
Meet Muffy! A golden-coated, gentle six-and-a-half-year-old Chow Chow currently in Sykesville, MD, who is looking for a new loving home after her devoted pet parent passed away. With a quiet charm and an old soul, Muffy is the kind of companion who prefers to observe the world from a cozy corner or the fresh air of a securely fenced yard before she fully opens her heart. Once she does, you’ll find a deeply loyal friend who offers high-fives, twirls with grace, and quietly becomes your biggest fan. Muffy is a medium-sized beauty, weighing in at 50 pounds, and is the very definition of "selectively social." She’s a fan of peaceful walks, forest hikes, and engaging trick sessions. Her cue repertoire is impressive, including “spin,” “wave,” and even “heel.” While she can be shy with new faces, Muffy has the heart of a loyal guardian and just needs time, patience, and a calm environment to truly blossom. This lovely girl thrives in a quiet, cat-free home with one or two experienced adults who understand her need for routine, space, and gentle encouragement. She’s not a fan of fast-moving chaos or surprise greetings from strangers, so children and busy households aren’t the right fit. Though selective with other dogs, she has formed bonds with a few, so a laid-back canine sibling might be on her list, provided proper introductions are handled slowly and respectfully. Muffy is house-trained, spayed, vaccinated, and beautifully behaved indoors. She's also quite independent and doesn’t mind being left alone for short periods. She loves her daily Greenie and enjoys a good brushing to maintain her plush coat. She does have one cautionary tale in her history (a single bite incident involving an unleashed dog who ran up to her) but in her daily life, Muffy is calm, observant, and deeply sweet with the people she trusts. She needs structure, not chaos; softness, not force; and a caregiver who sees the beauty in moving at her pace. Are you the calm, dog-savvy friend Muffy has been waiting for to share quiet walks and mutual trust? Reach out to adopt@joyfulpets.com to learn more about welcoming her into your heart and home! Story
*hair blowing in the wind (even though she's indoors)* *unexplained sparkles in the air* *faint heavenly music* Yes, she is me. Chloe. Now that you are blinded by my beauty, let me explain why I am the absolute best girl on the inside too and so deserving of your (and everyone's) undivided adoration. I'm loyal, smart as a whip, and FUN, just to name a few. Unfortunately, I didn't come from the most glamorous beginnings. I was an outdoor doggy with not much interaction from birth and my family also left me behind when they moved. Thus, I wasn't really brought up interacting with you humans or being touched/handled. I've had my quirks while adjusting to being a family dog and will definitely need someone patient and understanding with me. (If you get too touchy right away, I don't like that and will try to protect myself.) However, if you are slow and gain my trust I will HANG on your every move. I have adjusted very quickly in the past with proper introductions to people. Even still, I would probably do best in a home without young children. I'm a lady after all and need time to sniff you out before you get grabby. I am an active girl and love to feel the wind in my hair outdoors too. I run with the speed of light and have a prey drive to sniff out bugs, lizards and more. I also love to play tug of war and fetch with my foster mommy inside. I bounce, bounce, bounce all the time! I am great on leash so walks and hikes would be great for me. Getting my energy out will help me focus on training too. I am very smart and learn quickly, but tend to lose interest if I'm still chock full of go, go, go!! With all of this perfection, all of your pet needs should be fulfilled, right? RIGHT? I hope so because I would do great as an only pet in the home. I have been able to co-exist with dogs at the rescue but I am a bit of a diva in my foster home. I have a domineering personality sometimes and will even mark like a male when I come across another dog's scent in my house. How dare they??? Existing? HERE? (She is otherwise house trained.) Considering that you and I know each other a little better now, you may pet me. Yes, I am very soft, I know. Please keep in mind that I am a Chow/shepherd mix and have hair that will require brushing, maybe even the occasional spa treatment, Swedish massage, 24k gold facials...yeahhhhhhhhhh.... Sorry! I forgot you were here. In all seriousness, once I trust you, I will allow you to brush me out without much fuss. It doesn't need to be daily but I am a rough and tumble kinda gal and can use help keeping my locks flowing and free. I also shed so if I seem to be losing my girlish figure, it's probably just extra hair that needs to be brushed off. I hope you have a strong vacuum. ;) I could go on for days about myself, but I'll stop here. Don't wanna overwhelm you. If you think you are up for the challenge of a total spitfire like me, please feel free to send in an application and foster mommy can tell you more about all of the grandeur that is...CHLOE. Local adoption fee is $300 (in TX)

Story
Midnight, a common name for a common black dog....but what about me?? AM I COMMON??? NOPE! I am the lion of dog breeds :) Nothing normal or common about me! Not my beautiful mane OR my beautiful chow chow personality! So I was found in a park, abandoned with my "friends" after my owner died :( LUCKILY i found a rescue who not only LOVES the breed, but also has helped me get healthy (think heartworms and bad skin) but also will find me exactly the right family! (HOPEFULLY in a colder climate!!) I am not a puppy and since I am a single dog home I really would do best without young children or unpredictable adults :) I am a magnificent breed but we are a little picky about our friends and need someone who KNOWS and LOVES my breed.. I am ready for you if you are ready for me.... put in the adoption application!! Local adoption fee is $300 (in TX) OUt of state adoption fee is $550 (includes transport to your area)

Story
Meet Benson! A gentle five-year-old mixed breed currently in Street, MD, whose lineage includes American Pitbull Terrier, German Shepherd, Chow Chow, and other breeds, and whose soft cream coat and soulful eyes tell stories of loyalty, sensitivity, and quiet devotion. Benson is a large, 75-pound companion who carries himself with a thoughtful charm, blending the affectionate nature of a retriever-like appearance with the intelligence and awareness of his unique breed mix. Benson thrives as a constant companion, happiest when he is close to his people, whether joining for a car ride, lounging by the window like a curious cat, or snuggling in during quiet evenings. He is a calm, low-energy companion, more than content to nap at your side or relax while you go about your day rather than demand constant activity. He knows an impressive list of commands like sit, stay, come, and helpful focus cues like "leave it" and "look at me," along with sweet ones like kisses and snuggle, making him a joy for someone who appreciates a dog who loves to learn and connect. His favorite pastimes are low-key too: enrichment games, a good swim, a sturdy ball to chase, and relaxing with a favorite chew. Benson may take a couple of minutes to warm up to some people, but once he connects, he is deeply devoted, incredibly loving, and attentive with impeccable house manners. This intuitive boy is deeply in tune with emotions and forms strong bonds with his caregiver. He has a special way of offering comfort, gently leaning in or curling up beside you when you need it most. Benson would benefit from a calm, structured environment with a securely fenced yard that is at least six feet tall, as he has been known to jump fences, where he can feel safe, supported, and understood. In his first weeks in a new home, he does best kept on leash even within the fenced yard and around doorways while he settles in. His instinct under stress is to get back to his person rather than to wander off, so these simple precautions keep him safe while he bonds. He also walks well overall but can pull on leash, so continued guidance and positive reinforcement training will help him stay focused. Benson is selective with other dogs and can be reactive with unfamiliar ones, and he needs a thoughtful, well-managed environment to feel secure. He is not looking for conflict, though, and he responds well to guidance. He knows "leave it" and engage-and-disengage focus work, and he reliably brings his attention back to his person when another dog passes. While he has experience living with multiple dogs, there has been rising tension with one particular dog in the home that led to a physical altercation. Because of this, Benson would thrive as the only dog in a home, or with a caregiver who can provide very structured, gradual introductions supported by positive reinforcement training. He is not compatible with cats and needs an adult-only home where his sensitive and intuitive nature can shine. Benson takes a daily medication to manage his allergies and support his emotional balance, a plan established with his behavioral vet, with a situational calming aid on hand for higher-stress moments like grooming, helping him feel comfortable and at his best each day. If you are someone who values a loyal, emotionally attuned companion who will stand by your side through life's ups and downs, Benson may be waiting just for you!
