She should always be on leash when outside the house and not unsupervised in a fenced yard. 03/24/2024 Foster Feedback: Vespa has been in my care for about a month now. She’s continuing to come out of her shell and flourish in a home. Vespa can be so goofy and loves to play with toys. She’s still a number one fan of fetch and enjoys running around the yard with my dog. I have tried many kenneling techniques with Vespa, but she really doesn’t do well in her kennel. I now allow Vespa to free roam my house for the time I am gone which is up to 8 hours. She does wonderful! She rests for most of the day and spends a little time enjoying the views through the window. She’s much happier free roaming so an adopter that is willing to allow her to stay out when they’re gone is best for her. I also feel that she will do better having a dog buddy around as she seems to enjoy my dog’s presence during the day when I’m gone and will even mirror what he is doing (sleeping, looking out window, etc).  Vespa doesn’t seem to have a ton of leash walking experience so we are spending time working on leash training and not pulling on the leash. She does have a prey drive with squirrels and bunnies so an adopter comfortable with a stronger dog who needs continued leash training would be best. Thankfully, this girl is highly trainable and wants to work and learn new things! To speak to her flight risk tendencies- this is simply a precaution as if Vespa were to feel frightened she may bolt. I kept Vespa leashed in my yard when I first got her even though I have a tall secure privacy fence. As I started to trust her, I was able to drop the leash, and now she can just go out like an other dog. I don’t leave her out there unsupervised, but that is because she’d rather follow me back in after doing her job. Additionally, being more mindful when leaving the home is really the only accommodation I have to make with Vespa.  For anyone out there with heeler or herding dog experience, Vespa is the perfect mixture of what makes these herding dogs so special! I absolutely adore her and can’t wait to share all the great things that make Vespa the wonderful dog that she is.  2/28/24 Foster Feedback: If you’re reading this, then Vespa’s beautiful red speckled coat probably caught your eye. Vespa is just as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.  She just wants to find her person/people to create an unbreakable bond with. She can be shy at first, but warms up very quickly! Vespa loves nothing more than to follow me around the house and keep me company while I’m getting ready for work, cooking dinner, and relaxing on the couch. She sleeps through the night on a dog bed next to me, but would be just as happy to sleep in bed with you if you would let her. Vespa is a gentle soul that just wants to share her love with others. She has a generally very calm demeanor when I’m home with her.    Vespa is not a big fan of her kennel and is learning how to calm down in it. She just recently joined my household so this is a work in progress, but I do work a typical 8 hour day, so she is getting lots of exposure and practice with this. I wouldn’t recommend leaving her to free roam right away until she’s had ample time to understand your routines.    Vespa knows many tricks including: sit, stay, shake, come, and down. She is completely potty trained. Vespa is a huge fan of my resident dog and enjoys running around the yard with him. My dog can be pretty dominant and Vespa takes his cues well. She is a master at fetch and will retrieve and drop the ball in your lap all day if you will let her.    Vespa’s forever person/family can look forward to having a dog who is obedient, loyal, friendly, and smart! She is good with dogs and cats and has no reactivity to either. She loves a comfy bed and a good nap. Dolly doesn’t love stairs so would do best in a place that has less stairs. If you are looking for a friend that doesn’t ask much except some belly rubs, Dolly is your girl!  **  Dolly has been diagnosed with mitral valve disease and is on 2 medications to manage it. Mimosa had great in-home feedback during her time away from the rescue, and has shown us those attributes while at the shelter. Potty trained, friendly, walks well, good manners and just a happy girl. While she would be happier in a home, I have had a couple of fun interactions with her. When she gets excited she will tippy tap her front paws and it's adorable. She will make a great addition to some family. Her feedback from 2020 still pertains I would say, the only thing is she probably isn't a fence climber anymore due to body mass, it seems she enjoys just sitting and looking off into the distance. 4/18/2024 Previous Adopter Feedback: Mimosa was returned due to no fault of her own. Her previous owner had some life circumstances arise that prevented her from keeping Mimosa. Here is what she wrote about Mimosa “Mimzy”: Mimosa is very smart, easily trainable, and food-motivated. She has had two trainers work with her with good results. For example, when visitors come, she and my other dogs have to settle down (lay down or go to their crates) before the visitors come in through the gated front entry. She loves to snuggle or sit on my lap and is great with children and people in general. Healthwise, she has gained weight, both from lack of exercise and probably too many treats. However, this has helped her from jumping fences like she used to do. But to be safe, she will need a new home with a secure, 6 foot fence. She can still jump a baby gate or barrier. Mimzy’s Commands: She knows her name, and loves treats with training. She knows “Treat”, “Sit” (with pointer finger up, then the word and/or training treat), “Come”,  “Stay” (with open hand out), “Down” or “Off”, “Outside”, “Hungry?”(before meals), “Beep, beep” (to move), “Back back” away from the front door, “Crate/Kennel” (goes into her own, but never had the door shut). Mimosa and her brother sleep on the bed with me. She loves to be outside, on the deck or in the backyard. If she can’t be outside, she will watch out the window. Sometimes she will bark at people and dogs from the window, though. She loves to go for rides in the van, jumping in and out through the garage to the backyard because she might run away otherwise. She’s great on long car trips too. She also loves to run and go for walks with her harness. She’s not a counter surfer (never jumps on the counter). She does have a few quirks such as pulling on the leash at first or if she’s distracted, but will settle down eventually. She is trained to stay back from the open door, but if she does manage to get out the door, she will take off running (could be for hours), and sometimes doesn’t come back until she’s exhausted. But she seems to have street smarts… She will chase bunnies and squirrels. She can be a bit territorial about our yard and has gotten in scuffles when strange dogs have come into it. She’s not great at the dog park, she gets too overstimulated with all the dogs. She’s been around many other dogs and we’ve noticed she seems to do better with male dogs than other female dogs. She is such a sweet girl though and we love her so much. She needs a family who can give her the exercise she needs. 10/11/2020: We took our first pack walk with my dogs. I took all 4 and Mimosa did amazing.  She didn’t pull and did follow the lead of my dogs. She went to a public event for the rescue and did awesome with the people (kids and adults) and the other dogs that attended.  She was one popular pup!    10/7/2020: Mimosa has been with us over a week now and she is very sweet!  She loves to play with my big dogs and never bothers my little dog.  Mimosa is free in the house with the cat; I tell her to leave the cat alone and she listens.  She has slept free in our room and I couldn't find her one morning and she was quietly at the foot of the bed.  I have kenneled Mimosa and she barked a little at first but then quieted down.  She shares toys, treats, and food freely with no concerns.  Mimosa is very quiet in the house, I have only heard her bark when she is outside and sees people or other dogs.  She gets a little jumpy when excited to see someone but settles down well, we are working on it. Mimosa has learned to sit for her dinner and any treats. 9/29/2020: &#226&#128&#139 Mimosa has been with us a couple of days. She is such a honey!  She loves to be with her people and furry foster brothers.  She is great with my large male Pit, sassy Chihuahua, and young Lab mix.  I have a cat that she growls at but doesn’t try to get to her from behind a gate. Mimosa hasn’t had any accidents and sleeps quietly at night.  She has to wear a cone right now but wears it with ease, she is itchy and has some previous sores that are healing. Mimosa travels well in the car.  Get your application in...GO!To view additional dogs available for adoption, please see our website: www.4luvofdog.org May 4, 2024, 6:31 pm
