Story
Bramble is a three-year-old, 45-pound Coonhound who approaches life with boundless enthusiasm, especially when there are people to hug, dogs to play with, and absolutely anything new to investigate.Walk past her kennel and she'll stretch a paw through the gate as far as it will reach, hoping you'll stop and say hello. Open that gate and you're getting hound hugs and kisses. She's gentle, gloriously silly, and so ridiculously happy that it's almost impossible not to smile.Bramble is also busy catching up on some important life experiences. She's figuring out how to make squeaky toys squeak, how to chase balls that stubbornly refuse to stay put, and how wonderful it feels to curl up on a soft, clean blanket. She's a big fan of regular meals and an even bigger fan of treats. Bramble adores other dogs, people of all ages, sunbeams, blowing leaves, rain puddles, and pretty much anything else that crosses her path. And then there's her origin story - the beginning she somehow survived.Bramble came to us through the amazing folks at SWAG, a small but mighty volunteer team that works tirelessly to transport abandoned dogs to safety. The scar around Bramble's neck is from an embedded chain. The bald spots on her backside are from sitting, day after day, in a cage too small for her. She's heartworm-positive because the people who bred her, and likely profited from her puppies, couldn't be bothered to protect her from a preventable disease. She has terrible ear infections and a skin condition caused by poor nutrition and filthy living conditions. Someone found her useful enough to breed, but not worth the trouble of keeping healthy or comfortable.AAS is treating her heartworms, ears, and skin, and we'll cover those costs even after she's adopted. We can repair much of the damage done to her body.But, despite everything she's endured, Bramble's spirit soars.Bramble seems to have decided that the people who hurt her were the exceptions, and the rest of humanity deserves the benefit of the doubt. It's an astonishing amount of faith to place in a species with such a questionable track record.We desperately want her to be right. We want Bramble to have a family who finds as much joy in her as she finds in absolutely everything, and who makes sure she never has another reason to doubt us.Come meet Bramble at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA.
