Story
Buttercup is a 1-year-old, 10-pound Shih Tzu mix. We were told there may be some Corgi in there. We don’t really see it, but your guess is as good as ours. Whatever went into making her, the end result is ridiculously cute, slightly scruffy, and very, very soft.
Right now, Buttercup is scared of the world.
And when we say scared, we don’t mean the cute little “I’m shy” kind of scared. On first meeting, there is a reasonable possibility Buttercup will baptize you with the contents of her bladder, her bowels, or—if you’re especially lucky—both. Poor baby genuinely gets that frightened.
The good news is that she is already showing us that this doesn’t have to be permanent.
An animal control staff member spent time with her and had her won over in about three days. When she moved to her current foster home, it only took a couple of hours before she realized this person was safe, too. Every good experience she has with a patient, kind person seems to make the next one a little easier.
That’s exactly what we want to keep building on.
Buttercup doesn’t need someone determined to “socialize” her by introducing her to everyone they know. That would probably have the opposite effect. She needs a quieter home where she can get comfortable with her people and experience new things at a pace she can handle.
She is okay with small dogs, and we actually think having a friendly, confident little dog in her new home would be a big help. Another dog can show her that the new person isn’t an ax murderer, dinner happens regularly, and life around here is actually pretty good. She is also okay with cats.
Because of the level of fear she has right now, Buttercup cannot go to a home with children. We’d also prefer a home that isn’t Grand Central Station with visitors constantly coming and going.
She can be crated, which gives her a safe place when she needs one.
Most importantly, Buttercup needs a patient, small-dog-savvy adopter who isn’t going to take her fear personally. Don’t force her to interact. Don’t pass her around. Don’t expect her to be the life of the party.
Give her somewhere she feels safe and let her figure you out.
Because from what we’ve seen already, once Buttercup realizes you’re one of the good ones, she comes around surprisingly quickly.

Her minimum adoption donation amount is $375 She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, dewormed, heart worm checked, and on flea/tick and heart worm preventatives.
We are located in Bloomington, IL
We do not ship, you would need to travel to pick up your babies if you live out of state.
Your current pets must be up-to-date on core vaccines, spayed/neutered, and on heart worm prevention year round. You must be at least 21-years-old to adopt.
