Belky is a 3-year-old 9kg Pembroke Corgi with a beautiful red/white coat and short legs that keep her close to the ground. She has a sweet, expressive face and a gentle presence that makes her impossible not to love. Curious yet cautious, Belky likes to take her time getting to know new people and surroundings. Once she feels comfortable, her affectionate side shines through, and she is always ready to share plenty of kisses with the people she trusts.
Belky's name, often shortened to "Belks," was inspired by a character from a popular Netflix series—a brave young girl who overcomes many challenges and creates a meaningful life for herself despite adversity. We felt this name was especially fitting as Belky begins the next chapter of her own journey, leaving her past behind and looking forward to a bright future with a loving family.
Belky was rescued from a commercial breeding operation, where it was clear she had not been treated well, as she was fearful of people, new places, and unfamiliar noises. Like many dogs who have experienced a secluded, neglectful life, she has had to learn that the world can be a safe place. Based on some of her behaviours, we assume that her experience with men may not have been the best; however, Belky continues to demonstrate that with love and training she is overcoming this fear. Since coming into rescue, Belky has made tremendous progress in learning to trust others and reducing the fear she feels toward new experiences. With lots of love, patience, and plenty of cheese treats, she continues to grow more confident every day. Her resilience and determination to overcome her challenges are exactly why her name feels so perfect for her story.
Belky would do well in a variety of home settings, whether that be an apartment, townhouse, or detached home. Although she has not yet been exposed to apartment living or elevators, Belky learns well through gradual exposure, confidence from her humans, and plenty of yummy treats. Right now, a high rise apartment with a lot of tenants would not be a good fit for her, but a smaller apartment or condo setting would suit her fine. She would love tho a home with a yard that she can explore.
At home, Belky loves spending her time exploring and is often found sleeping near her foster mom. She enjoys gentle pets, chasing after her foster mom, and having zoomies while playing with her reflection in mirrors, oven doors, patio doors, or any other reflective surface she can find. She is also happy entertaining herself with a hard chew or her beloved stuffed giraffe. If it weren't for the jingling of her tags, you might never know she was there. Belky is a very quiet dog who rarely barks or whines and thrives in a calm environment. She will need a family who understands that she is still evolving into the best dog she can be and is willing to advocate for her as she navigates this new world.
One of Belky's favourite activities is going for walks. She loves taking her time to sniff and explore nature and walks beautifully on leash. She frequently looks back to make sure her foster parents are still with her and enjoys spending approximately 1 hour walking each day. Belky continues to work on feeling comfortable around unfamiliar people on the sidewalk and will often try to create more space between herself and strangers. Her confidence continues to grow with the support of her foster parents, who help reassure her that she is safe. Of course, a few treats for good behaviour help too! Belky does not react to other dogs or animals on her walks and passes by them with no problem.
Belky has also done very well with grooming. As mentioned above, she can be cautious around new people and experiences, but with patience, gentle handling, and lots of treats, she handles grooming appointments with a positive attitude. Belky can be cautious at the vet but does well overall, though she appreciates gentle handling during exams and shots. She has recently been spayed, is up to date on vaccinations, and is otherwise medically up to date.
Belky is fully house-trained and crate-trained. Her crate has become one of her favourite places to relax and unwind, whether for a short nap or several hours of rest. She is comfortable spending time in her crate when her foster parents are away, sleeps in it overnight, and rides in a crate in the car to ensure her safety when she cannot be directly supervised. Having a crate provides Belky with a safe space where she can feel secure and comfortable.
Belky does very well with other dogs. She is curious about them, enjoys their company, and loves having a playmate to chase around. Because of this, Belky may benefit from having a confident male dog in the home to help her continue building confidence in new situations while also providing her with a lifelong companion. When out on walks, she is interested in other dogs and enjoys observing them. She would not like another female dog in the home, but could have female dog friends. Her behaviour around cats is currently unknown. Due to her puppy mill background, Belky can still be sensitive to loud noises and sudden movements, so she would do best in an adult only home or a home with older, dog-savvy teens who understand how to interact respectfully with dogs and can give her the space she needs to feel safe and comfortable. Her timid nature means that she could pose a flight risk so we need to be sure that everyone in the house can be trusted to keep doors and gates closed.
Belky is a gentle, affectionate Corgi who has made incredible progress learning to trust the world after a difficult start in life. She will thrive in a calm, patient home that offers routine, gentle handling, and continued positive exposure to new experiences. Belky’s story is one of resilience. Once she feels safe, her sweet, playful, and loving personality truly shines through.
