Meet Pithaya! Pithaya's foster describes her as timid, sweet and gentle. Pithaya came to us after being abandoned outside of a shelter in Mexico at just three months of age. In familiar spaces, around people she knows, Pithaya is the most gentle, sweet and loving girl. She loves chew toys, belly rubs, kisses and cuddles. Her name means dragonfruit in Spanish and true to her name this girl is both beautiful and sweet.
Given Pithaya's start to life, a lot of things are scary and new for her. She is cautious and timid around new things and will retreat to her crate if she feels uncomfortable. This includes when new and unfamiliar people enter the home. When out on walks, Pithaya will try to keep her distance from strangers and she is often startled by loud noises and cars.
Pithaya's ideal family will be patient and give her space when she needs it. A quiet, suburban home would be best suited for her. Pithaya has not been tested living with kids.
Pithaya currently goes for 3 walks a day, each about 25 minutes in duration. Pithaya will pull on walks to try and get away from scary things but in calm, quiet areas with no traffic, she walks well on the leash. Pithaya is mostly potty trained, she will go outside when given the chance but due to her fear of the outside, she is reluctant to signal when she needs to be let out. She will be successful with a family that can give her frequent, regular potty breaks. She may take a few days to adjust to her forever families schedule. Pithaya has been left alone for up to four hours with no problem. She immediately settles into her crate as it is her safe and happy place. She also sleeps in her crate at night and sleeps soundly until morning.
Pithaya has met a few other dogs and got along well. She would do well in a home with another canine who is respectful of her boundaries. She seems to enjoy going for walks with familiar dogs as it gives her a bit more confidence while outside. A calm, lower energy canine housemate would be welcomed. She has growled at other dogs that push her past her comfort zone too quickly but has not shown further aggression or reactivity. Pithaya has never met a cat before and we are unsure of how she would react to one.
Pithaya has not started obedience training yet as her foster is focused on getting her settled and comfortable in the home first. However, Pithaya is very treat motivated so her obedience training should be a breeze. Pithaya's forever family will need to work with her on building her confidence as well as basic obedience training to help her grow to be the best dog she can be.
