Story
Reese Cocoapup is developing into a kind, polite little gentledog. He is respectful toward the other dogs in his foster home, is affectionate and playful with his foster mom, and is generally easy to be around when with people he knows in a familiar environment. HISTORY The five Cocoapups were very young babies when they were dumped on a country road near Prosser, in Eastern Washington, in early September. A rescuer took them in and called on HART for help. We were able to place them in a foster home, and they have been growing and thriving ever since. It's difficult to guess the breed mix of dumped puppies, and when these little guys first came to us we assumed they were part Border Collie or Heeler. Then we fed them and they GREW, and now we're pretty sure that Mama was at least part Doberman, while they may have different fathers. We believe Reese's papa was a German Shepherd mix. SOCIALIZATION Reese adores his foster mom, but is cautious around other people. Treats help win his approval, but he takes a long time to warm up, and he can be barky with strangers. His adopter will need to work with him to socialize him and build his confidence. He shares his foster home with a large pack of dogs of all ages and sizes. He is gentle with the tinies and respectful of the older dogs, but loves playing with the younger, more energetic members of the pack. There are ducks and chickens in his foster home. He doesn't have access to them, and doesn't show any interest in getting to them through the fence. He seems to have very little prey drive, and would probably live safely with a confident, dog-savvy cat. TEMPERAMENT & BEHAVIOR This boy is very laid back! He has plenty of puppy energy and will likely be a good companion for walks and casual hikes, but he's also able to settle and take life easy while his human is busy working. He's an affectionate pup who loves attention. Reese will check in with you at intervals to collect a hug and a kiss, and then he ambles off and continues with his day. He's not at all needy, but he's a good companion who tends to follow his foster mom around while she goes about her day's work. Reese loves a good chew, although he's pretty good at knowing the difference between his toys and yours. He may steal your socks - he likes carrying them around. He loves to wrestle with the other dogs, and enjoys a good game of tug or keepaway. He enjoys toys, and will chase a ball - although he hasn't yet learned to bring it back. He's starting to act like a bit of a watchdog. He'll alert and let you know when there's a stranger nearby, and he'll bark to let you know to pay attention. When there's nothing in particular to bark at, he tends to be quiet. TRAINING Reese is reliably house-trained, and will let you know when he needs to go out. He is crate trained, although he doesn't love the crate except when he needs to hide. He's comfortable on a leash and enjoys going for leashed walks, and he comes when he's called. His house manners are generally good. It's important to remember, REESE IS A PUPPY! Puppies are HARD WORK! He is still learning not to jump up on people. He likes to dig in the yard, and he loves to investigate the trash for treats or toys. In other words, he still has lessons to learn about being a civilized indoor dog. Please don't apply to adopt Reese unless you are up for the work of teaching him how to be a good boy. PHYSICAL & HEALTH STATUS Based on their teeth and the fact that they could barely lap water, we estimate that they were maybe six weeks old when we took them. We have assigned them July 23, 2023 as their birthday. He is in good overall health, and has been vaccinated, treated for intestinal parasites, and microchipped. We expect him to weigh around 75 lbs when full-grown. HART does not support pediatric spay and neuter. We believe, based on current research, that pups develop best when they have an uninterrupted supply of sex hormones for at least the first five months of their lives. The Cocoapups' adopters will be contractually obligated to ensure that their pup is sterilized between five months and one year. HART will refund $100 - equivalent to the cost of sterilization by our usual veterinary clinic - when you provide proof that your pup has been sterilized. ADOPTION INFORMATION Reese is living in a private home, and will be available to meet you after your adoption application has been approved. Please email HearthfireART@gmail.com to request an adoption application form. Story
This gentle, shy boy has the softest nature. He's a lover and loves him some snuggles, he loves to play, and he's also able to just quietly kick back and mind his bone. He's looking for a place in a family of calm, kind people who will enjoy introducing him to all the good things the world has to offer a sweet pup. HISTORY Heath is part of the Cocoapup litter - five very young babies who were dumped on a country road near Prosser, in Eastern Washington, in early September 2023. A rescuer took them in and called on HART for help. We were able to place them in a foster home, and they have been in foster care ever since. The breed mix of dumped puppies is always a "best guess" situation. However, based on their appearance and temperament and supported by a DNA test an adopter did on the Cocoapup they took home, we're confident that mama is a Doberman. The DNA test indicated a Husky/Malamute mix; we also think some of the pups may have been fathered by a German Shepherd. SOCIALIZATION Socializing these dogs since their rescue has been a long, slow process, because they were in very poor physical health when we took them in, and that slowed their social development. Heath has made huge strides in building confidence and learning to accept new people and situations, but he needs an adoptive family that will continue patiently working with him. With people he knows, Heath is affectionate, confident and trusting. With visitors he may initially be cautious, but once he's had a chance to check them out he warms up quickly - especially if treats are on offer! However, introductions must go slowly; Heath doesn't cope well with people who push too hard into his space or try to force him, and he may nip if you don't give him time and space to decide you're okay. Heath shares his foster home with several dogs and gets on well with all of them. He loves to play, but respects their boundaries and happily lets them boss him around. He would enjoy playdates with other dogs that are polite and friendly. There are four cats in Heath's foster home, and he would very much like to be friends with them. He will do well in a home with a confident, dog-savvy cat. He has also shared a foster home with free-range ducks and chickens, and showed very little prey drive. TEMPERAMENT & BEHAVIOR As Heath matures he's developing into a moderate energy dog. He needs daily exercise, enjoys walks around his neighborhood, and has the potential to be a great hiking companion for hikes and other outings, but he's also able to join you for couch time and quietly keep you company while you're at your computer. He is very playful! With the other dogs in his foster home he likes to roughhouse. His favorite outdoor game is keep-away, he enjoys tug-of-war with the Chihuahua, and he loves to run zoomies. He enjoys toys, and especially likes to eviscerate squeaky stuffies. He's also an enthusiastic chewer of pretty much anything he can wrap his mouth around - he LOVES a big meaty bone. With his own people this boy is a lover. He'll line up for his share of any pets on offer, and he loves to lie at his special human's feet and just keep you company. When strangers come into his space he barks - he's an excellent watchdog - and he's developing an instinct to protect his people. Although generally quiet, he barks at people passing by his foster home, and alerts when he hears an unfamiliar noise. He enjoys car rides and is calm and interested while traveling. TRAINING Heath is reliably potty trained, and crate trained. He is not yet ready to have unsupervised free run of the house. This boy is very smart and highly trainable. He responds well to correction, is treat-motivated, and loves to learn. We believe he'll be increasingly rewarding to train as his confidence grows. He's already making progress on some basic obedience training. His recall is iffy - sometimes he comes, sometimes he's busy. He walks very well on a leash, and is learning "sit", "no" and "leave it". However, in many ways Heath is still a puppy. He still hasn't quite figured out the difference between human stuff (don't chew) and his stuff (chew at will). He can be bouncy and clumsy, and is still learning not to jump up on people. He likes to dig in the yard. In other words, like most adolescents he still has lessons to learn about being a civilized family member. PHYSICAL & HEALTH STATUS Based on their teeth and the fact that they could barely lap water, we estimate that the Cocoapups were maybe six weeks old when we took them. We have assigned them July 23, 2023 as their birthday. Heath appears to be in good overall health, and has been vaccinated, treated for intestinal parasites, neutered and microchipped. We expect him to weigh 75-80 lbs when full-grown. ADOPTION INFORMATION Heath is living in a private home, and will be available to meet you after your adoption application has been approved. Please email HearthfireART@gmail.com to request an adoption application form. Heath's adoption fee is $385. Story
He's a clown, he's a lover, he's gentle, and he's a world champion snuggler. Rolo has a heart full of love, and he just wiggles with joy when his special someone comes home. HISTORY Rolo is part of the Cocoapup litter - five very young babies who were dumped on a country road near Prosser, in Eastern Washington, in early September 2023. A rescuer took them in and called on HART for help. We were able to place them in a foster home, and they have been in foster care ever since. The breed mix of dumped puppies is always a "best guess" situation. However, based on their appearance and temperament and supported by a DNA test an adopter did on the Cocoapup they took home (who is almost the spitting image of Rolo), we're confident that mama is a Doberman. The DNA test indicated papa is a Husky/Malamute mix. Rolo is located in Pasco, Eastern Washington. We post our dogs as located in other cities in order to optimize their chances of finding a great home. These dogs are totally worth a road trip! However, if necessary we will transport them to an approved home anywhere within the Pacific Northwest. SOCIALIZATION Socializing these dogs since their rescue has been a long, slow process, because they were in very poor physical health when we took them in, and that slowed their social development. Rolo has made huge strides in building confidence and learning to accept new people and situations, but he needs an adoptive family that will continue patiently working with him. With people he knows Rolo is a happy, affectionate pup. He takes a while to warm up to strangers, but treats help! He's looking for an adopter who is willing to continue socializing him and building his confidence. He hasn't been around children while in our care, but we believe he'd do well with kind children aged around 10 or older. He's a gentle boy and we'd trust him with younger children, but he'd likely find typical kid energy overwhelming. Rolo shares his foster home with several other dogs, and gets on well with all of them. He often initiates play, but respects their boundaries. We believe he'd do best in a home with another laid back, friendly doggo to show him the ropes and help him fit in - and, of course, to be a playmate. There are four cats in Rolo's foster home, and he pretty much ignores them. He will do well in a home with a confident, dog-savvy cat. He has also shared a foster home with ducks and chickens, and he showed no sign of any prey drive. TEMPERAMENT & BEHAVIOR Rolo would enjoy life with an active family. He's a mellow, laid-back pup who knows how to relax and do nothing, but he does need daily exercise, play and stimulation. If you don't give this boy enough of a workouthe will entertain himself! He loves to dig - if there's a fishpond or a swimming pool in your landscaping plans, Rolo would love to help! Once he's had his workout, he is a snugglebug deluxe! Rolo's favorite place in the world is up on the couch, cuddled up close to his foster mom and soaking up as many pets as she's willing to dish out. However he isn't needy - when you're working at your computer or busy with chores, he's content simply to stay close by and watch you. He enjoys a good chew, especially on a good juicy bone, and he's pretty good at knowing what's his to chew and what's yours to leave alone. He loves stuffies and squeaky toys, and usually takes a while to destroy them. For active play, nothing beats a good zoomie - alone or with a friend. He also loves rough play with the other dogs - tag, tug, you name it, he's up for it. Rolo rarely barks unless the other dogs get him going. That said, he's very vocal - his one Husky character trait! He has opinions and likes to express them, and when he's sad and lonely he'll tell you about that too. TRAINING He is reliably house-trained and will tell you when he wants to go outside. He's crate trained and is used to being crated at night or when his foster mom is away from home. He's not yet ready to be loose unsupervised in your home. However, his house manners are generally pretty good. This boy is very smart and highly trainable. He responds well to correction, is treat-motivated, and loves to learn. However, he still has a lot to learn. His recall is iffy - sometimes he'll come, sometimes he's busy. He's still learning to be comfortable on a leash, but he tends to pull. He knows "sit" and is learning "no" and "leave it". However, in many ways Rolo is still a puppy. He can be bouncy and clumsy, and is still learning not to jump up on people. He likes to dig in the yard - seriously, if you think your house might be sitting on oil, he's the dog for you, but if you're passionate about your garden, he probably isn't right now. In other words, like most adolescents he still has lessons to learn about being a civilized family member. PHYSICAL & HEALTH STATUS Based on their teeth and the fact that they could barely lap water, we estimate that the Cocoapups were maybe six weeks old when we took them in. We have assigned them July 23, 2023 as their birthday. Rolo is in good overall health, and have been neutered, vaccinated, treated for intestinal parasites, and microchipped. We expect him to weigh around 75-80 lbs when full-grown.
