Story
This playful girl is the perfect mix of affection and independence! Birdie adores belly rubs, cuddles, and of course, treats! She is very treat motivated which makes training fun and rewarding. She is housebroken and enjoys spending time with her people but she is also independent enough to relax on her own. Birdie knows how to sit and is learning other commands. She is currently working on her leash manners, and still has other basics to refine, but she learns fast and actually enjoys training. Birdie does have a prey drive, so a home without cats or small dogs is going to be the safest fit. And lets be honest — Boerboels are not your casual 'first dog' breed. They are powerful protection dogs by nature and you need to understand what comes with owning a dog like her. The good news? They are phenomenal family companions when they have structure and Birdie has been nothing but gentle and sweet with her entire foster family. If you are experienced with large working breeds and want a smart, loyal, fun dog to add to your family, Birdie is your girl. A local trainer, who is actually her foster parent, is offering free training lessons to whoever adopts her, because we all want to set her and her new family up for success from day one. Birdie is one year old and weighs 112 pounds. The adoption fee for adult dogs, seven months and older, is $250. All pets are microchipped, up to date on vaccines, and will be altered prior to adoption. If you are interested in meeting a dog, please stop by the shelter during open hours. Dogs may be in a foster home, therefore scheduling an appointment is recommended. If you have an existing dog at home, we recommend bringing it along to meet your possible new family member.helpingstrays.org
