Story
Update! RJ had his enucleation surgery and is so much happier. He’s even more playful and affectionate than he was before the surgery. He’s a really terrific boy who is lovable, brave, resilient and so smart!  RJ is a seven year old Dutch Shepherd mix. He was found wandering on the mean streets of South Los Angeles by himself, and taken to a high kill shelter. We pulled RJ out of the shelter to give him a chance at a good life. RJ has PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and cataracts and is blind. He doesn't let the lack of sight affect his quality of life, and is a happy guy who finds his way around just fine. This brave boy is only hesitant about one thing: traffic noises. RJ has a surgery coming up to remove both eyes because he has blown up a case of glaucoma in both eyes. He will be much happier, and pain free afterwards. He'll be available for adoption as soon as he is completely healed. He's a very affectionate boy who really doesn't ask for a lot, but he sure does like belly rubs and cuddle sessions. He enjoys every meal, and loves the raw bone-in treats that we give him every day. He's content to make himself comfortable on his big cushy bed, and will alert to sounds that he's not familiar with. We always announce ourselves when we greet RJ, and he always has a nose to the air - his other senses take over for his lack of sight. He knows every bush and tree on his walks, and likes going out for short adventures. He likes car rides, too. We guide him with our voices. We're searching for an owner that knows that sometimes dogs that aren't perfect CAN be perfect. RJ is always cheerful, gentle and doesn't know a bad day. He learns very fast when taught, too. He greets every day and person with a smile on his face. He's a really amazing spirit. Story
Sex: FemaleBreed: German ShepherdEstimated Date of Birth : 04/24/2024What happens when shy shutdown dogs are given a chance? We can promise you’re going to see a whole new dog! This was Reina’s story. From terrified and alone she’s now the life of the party. This sweet young girl just needed the right environment and time to decompress. Shepherds are often very sensitive dogs and in a shelter setting they can be completely overwhelmed. Overwhelmed means you see negative behaviors and not the dogs true personality. Reina just needed her chance and now that she’s got it what an amazing and spunky girl she is! Almost 2 months, that’s how long Reina sat terrified in her shelter kennel. The noses, smells and activity never letting up. She could feel the desperation of the other dogs and as she felt that growing tension her own desperation grew. Shy dogs don’t do well in a shelter setting and with her breed she stood little chance of making it out alive. With no owners and no adoption interest she’s was euthanasia listed. She’d hit the limit of a sad life devoid of anything good. She desperately needed that good and with the last minute yes from an amazing foster family she finally got the good she’d been waiting for. Change for Reina didn’t happen immediately. She still didn’t trust even in the new environment. She needed time to decompress and she needed time to feel safe. Once she did we saw a brand new dog! Reina loves other dogs. They really help her come out of her shell. She has a rough and rowdy play style that is loads of fun. Shes gaining more and more confidence daily and we know in the right home she’s going to be a ridiculously amazing adult dog. Reina’s future home should be committed to continued confidence building and include at least one other fun loving dog she can pal around with. She’s crate trained and her leash walking skills improve daily. With this 2nd chance Reina’s future is now incredibly bright. Want to be part of that future? Apply today!
