Story
This beautiful 5-year-old black and white Cocker Spaniel is a breeder release with a soft coat and a quiet, observant personality. She will do best in a calm, predictable home with gentle handling and patience as she continues to build confidence.
She is potty trained and kennel trained, and she can also be trusted loose in the home. Her foster confidently leaves her out of the kennel when away, as she is calm and non-destructive indoors.
With other animals, she is an easy companion. She gets along well with other dogs, tends to follow them around rather than actively engage in play, and she ignores the cat in the home.
She does show some resource sensitivity around food. While not aggressive, she may use mild intimidation to keep other dogs away from her bowl, so structured feeding management is recommended.
Leash experience appears limited. While she was reportedly leash trained in the past, her current behavior suggests she will need a refresher and continued leash training, especially in new or stimulating environments. Her recall is generally good, but can weaken when she is following scents or distractions. She should never be let off leash, as she is a flight risk when scared.
She has a strong nose and enjoys tracking outdoor scents, especially small wildlife such as chipmunks. Because of this, a secure above-ground, fenced yard is required, as she may become highly focused on scent trails and less responsive once engaged. Unfortunately, electronic fencing systems are not considered safe for breeder release dogs, as they may run through the boundary when scared and then be unwilling to cross back over it due to the correction.
She is also sensitive to sound and sudden movement. Loud noises (such as the TV, raised voices, or household activity) or quick hand movements may cause her to retreat to her kennel for comfort.
Grooming will be required, and she can become fearful during grooming sessions, particularly with loud dryer noises, so a gentle and patient approach is best.
Fancy rides well in the car when secured in a kennel; however, she may attempt to lunge out when the kennel door is opened or being opened. For safety, she should always be securely leashed and the kennel door blocked before opening to prevent any sudden exit. After car rides, she will also need a brief potty break before entering a home or indoor space, as she may experience loose stool or diarrhea immediately following travel, likely due to anxiety. Once she has had a moment to decompress, she settles well.
Her experiences outside the home can feel overwhelming, so patience will be important as she continues learning that new places, sounds, and environments are safe.
