Story
Meet Kendall & Kylie — Two Sweethearts on the Road to Recovery. Kendall and Kylie arrived at Polk County Humane Society after wandering together, clearly bonded and looking for safety. Unfortunately, both girls tested positive for heartworms—a serious but treatable condition. Thanks to our generous donors and veterinary partners, PCHS covers the full cost of their heartworm treatment. But we need adopters or fosters who can commit to the care these girls need during recovery. What Heartworm Treatment Involves: Oral medications administered at home. Veterinary visits for a series of injections. Strict activity restriction for several weeks, including crate rest or confinement to small areas indoors, leash-only potty breaks and outdoor time and no running, jumping, or rough play. This quiet recovery period is essential to ensure the heartworms are safely eliminated without complications. Are you the one who can help one or both of these girls transition from survivors to thrivers? If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! All of our pets are neutered or spayed, have vaccinations appropriate for their age, treated with flea/tick/heartworm prevention, dewormed and dogs are also microchipped. #adoptdontshop ##2470141##

Meet Toby! This handsome lab mix is about a year old and full of love, energy, and potential. He came to us after being found just a few blocks away, running as a stray. A kind-hearted neighbor picked him up and brought him to safety. We may not know much about his past, but Toby's future is looking bright! He’s an incredibly happy, affectionate, and playful pup who’s always eager to make new friends—human and canine alike. He gets along well with other dogs, especially those with confident, calm personalities who can help guide him with a little structure. Toby is still learning the ropes when it comes to manners and basic training, but he’s not trying to be naughty—he’s just so excited about everything life has to offer! With a little guidance and patience, this sweet boy is sure to blossom into a wonderful lifelong companion. Story
Meet Chance! Chance is an almost 6-year-old Lab x Heeler with a heart ready for a second chance. Originally adopted from us as a pup in December 2020, Chance’s first family realized he grew bigger than they expected and sadly had to return him. While we don’t know all the details of his life over the past several years, what we do know is that Chance is experiencing some stress in the shelter environment. He’s thrilled to meet people, but he carries a lot of pent-up anxiety. He’s sensitive to assertive handling and is quick to set boundaries, so a home without children would likely be best. Chance is an older guy who just needs patience, guidance, and structure. With the right family to show him how to relax, how to live alongside humans, and how to enjoy love and companionship, Chance has the potential to thrive. He may take a little time to settle in, but with consistency and care, he’ll reward you with loyalty, affection, and the joy of being a well-adjusted dog. Chance is ready to find the calm, loving home he deserves. Could that be yours?

Story
Meet Benji 💛 Benji is a 4-year-old Lab x Shepherd mix (with maybe a little something smaller thrown in) and weighs about 40 lbs — a perfect medium-sized companion. He originally came to us through animal control as a young pup back in 2022 and spent nearly a full year in our care before finally being adopted. Unfortunately, something didn’t work out. Recently, Benji was found running astray and picked up by animal control once again. When we tried to contact his adopters, we were never able to reach them — so through no fault of his own, Benji is back with us and once again searching for his true forever home. And honestly… we don’t understand why he’s still waiting. If you want to talk about a happy dog, Benji is that dog. He loves everyone and everything. He practically vibrates with excitement and joy, and is always eager to make friends. He’s affectionate, food motivated, and eager to please — he truly wants to be a good boy. What Benji needs is simple: someone who will commit to him and give him the stability, love, and structure he deserves. In return, he’ll give you loyalty, laughter, and endless happiness. We’ll vouch for him — Benji is a very good boy, and he’s ready for his forever home. 🐾💛
