Story
Forest is about 5 years old, we have had him for 4 yrs. He is loving and goofy. He would do well with older kids, and maybe very patient female dogs (no dogs would be better). He has had resource guarding issues with other dogs that has led to aggression. We have managed this behavior by keeping him away from all the male dogs in our family and training (he is very smart). We also do not keep him out while we eat dinner to protect our female dog. They do eat in the same room without issue. Forest guards us and the furniture from our female dog, but her temperament is very patient so this has not escalated in the 4 years they have lived together. Another dog would need to be a very good match in order for this to work. The reason we are looking for a new home now, is that we have a 1 year old child, and my husband travels for work. I need help from my family while he is gone, but can't stay with them with him. He would be a perfect dog for the right fit. We love this dog very much.

Story
Paboo is a handsome sable German Shepherd with a striking blend of black and warm brown in his coat and a solid, confident presence to match his 71-pound frame. He’s the kind of dog who turns heads on walks—not just for his looks, but for the happy, purposeful way he trots along at your side. Walks are one of Paboo’s absolute favorite things. Whether it’s a quick stroll around the block or a longer adventure, he’s always ready to go and loves having a job to do. Paboo already knows how to sit, showing off his smarts and willingness to learn. Like many German Shepherds, he thrives on connection, routine, and having something to focus on, making him a wonderful companion for someone who enjoys engaging with their dog both physically and mentally. With his loyal nature and eagerness to be by your side, Paboo is ready to be someone’s devoted partner in both everyday moments and outdoor adventures. Since many of our adoptable dogs are in foster homes, appointments are highly recommended to ensure the animal you are interested in is currently at the shelter. Please call or e-mail the shelter to set up an appointment to meet and adopt! Our adoption fees include the following: all of our dogs/puppies are current on vaccinations (DHPP and Rabies if over 3 months of age) at the point of adoption, dewormed, heartworm tested and current on preventative, microchipped, treated for fleas/ticks and are spayed or neutered. Our large dog adoption fee is generally $175 + tax. Our small dog and puppy adoption fee is generally $300+ tax. Adoption fees may vary in special circumstances. Due to space limitations, we do not hold dogs. Because we are on a busy street, we require that all dogs leaving the shelter be in a carrier or on leash. All pets remain up for adoption until an approved application is processed and their adoption fee paid.

Story
Hey there, I’m Douglas—but my friends call me Doug 🐾 A 1½-year-old German Shepherd with good looks and a loyal heart to match. I came to Heartland in search of my forever home, and I’m hoping it might be with you. I’ll be honest—I can be a little nervous when meeting new people at first. But give me a little time and patience, and I promise I’ll warm up into the affectionate, devoted companion I truly am. Once you’re in my circle, I love being around my people. I’m great with kids and enjoy spending time with the ones I love most. When it comes to other dogs, I can be a bit selective, so slow introductions are the way to go. And as for cats… let’s just say we’re not a good match. What I’m really looking for is someone who understands that the best friendships take a little time to build. In return, you’ll get a loyal, loving companion who will stand by your side through it all. If you think we could be the perfect match, give Heartland a call and set up a meet and greet. I’ll be waiting to meet you. 🐶💛

Story
Chloe is a 3-year-old, 50-lb German Shepherd with that classic shepherd loyalty and watchful nature. She’s lived both indoors and outdoors and could comfortably return to either lifestyle with the right home. Chloe gets along with most other dogs. She has been in training at the SPOT program in Springfield learning her manners and commands. She has graduated, and she is ready for her new home. True to her breed, she’s alert, devoted, and happiest when she has a person to look out for. If you’re looking for a smart, faithful companion ready to be your number-one gal, Chloe is waiting to clock in for duty.
