Story
Red is a 10-year-old, 91-lb male German Shepherd who is neutered, medically up to date, and ready to settle into a calm, understanding home for his golden years. He’s a bit of a stubborn, grumpy old man—but in the sweetest, most charming way. Think of him as the grandpa who hasn’t quite caught up with the times, but still has plenty of wisdom (and opinions) to share. Red loves a good routine, and if you’re steady and consistent, he’s more than happy to follow along. He finds comfort in knowing what to expect, especially when his favorite toy ball is involved—seriously, that ball should come with him wherever he goes. Red is also treat and food motivated, which makes working with him both fun and rewarding. Because the shelter environment isn’t ideal for fully assessing behavior, we aren’t able to accurately determine how Red would do with other dogs, cats, or children. A quieter home with patient adopters who are willing to go at his pace would suit him best. If you’re looking for a loyal companion with an old-soul personality, a love of routine, and just the right amount of grumpy charm, Red may be your perfect match. Since many of our adoptable dogs are in foster homes, appointments are highly recommended to ensure the animal you are interested in is currently at the shelter. Please call or e-mail the shelter to set up an appointment to meet and adopt! Our adoption fees include the following: all of our dogs/puppies are current on vaccinations (DHPP and Rabies if over 3 months of age) at the point of adoption, dewormed, heartworm tested and current on preventative, microchipped, treated for fleas/ticks and are spayed or neutered. Our large dog adoption fee is generally $175 + tax. Our small dog and puppy adoption fee is generally $300+ tax. Adoption fees may vary in special circumstances. Due to space limitations, we do not hold dogs. Because we are on a busy street, we require that all dogs leaving the shelter be in a carrier or on leash. All pets remain up for adoption until an approved application is processed and their adoption fee paid.

Story
Thor is a 7-year-old male German Shepherd who is looking for an experienced adopter who understands the breed and can provide a calm, patient home. He does best in a predictable environment with clear boundaries and consistent guidance. Thor needs to be the only pet in the home and requires a household with no kids, cats, or other dogs. He can be a bit pushy at times, but his behavior comes from enthusiasm and strong opinions rather than ill intent—he is well-meaning and responsive when handled by someone confident and consistent. With the right person, Thor has the potential to be a loyal, devoted companion who thrives on structure, routine, and one-on-one attention. He’s best suited for someone ready to advocate for his needs and give him the stability he deserves. Since many of our adoptable dogs are in foster homes, appointments are highly recommended to ensure the animal you are interested in is currently at the shelter. Meet Grisner 🐾 Hi, friends! I’m Grisner, a 2-year-old German Shepherd mix, and I’m currently at Heartland patiently waiting for my forever family to come find me. I’m a friendly, happy boy who loves spending time with humans. I’ve got lots of energy and would be thrilled to join you for walks, runs, hikes, or any adventure your active lifestyle has in store. If you’re looking for a fun-loving sidekick, I’m your guy! I’m also a smart pup who’s eager to learn — I’d do great with training, commands, and polishing up my manners. With a little guidance and consistency, I know I can be an outstanding companion. If you’re searching for a sweet, energetic boy to bring joy, laughter, and love into your life, don’t wait! Give Heartland a call to set up a meet and greet. I can’t wait to meet you! 💙

Story
Ringo came to Heartland from a home that loved him — they just had too many animals to keep up. He’s lived a life, and it shows a little. An old injury gives him a noticeable limp when he overdoes it. We took X-rays hoping there was a big fix… but the truth is, Ringo’s prescription is simpler than surgery: slow down, take it easy, and have a calm place to land. Ringo is incredibly sweet, loyal, good with other dogs, and tolerant of kids — as long as no one expects him to wrestle like a young pup. He’s on arthritis meds, happy to relax, and ready to be someone’s steady companion.

Story
Chloe is a 3-year-old, 50-lb German Shepherd with that classic shepherd loyalty and watchful nature. She’s lived both indoors and outdoors and could comfortably return to either lifestyle with the right home. Chloe gets along with most other dogs and absolutely adores her sidekick sister, Nyla, here at HHS. True to her breed, she’s alert, devoted, and happiest when she has a person to look out for. If you’re looking for a smart, faithful companion ready to be your number-one gal, Chloe is waiting to clock in for duty.

Story
Very sweet German Shepard. Very loving and loyal. He is good with other dogs but humans are his favorite. He does have separation anxiety wher is is good with being left alone at the house but gets a bit crazy with being left at unfamiliar places; daycare, boarding, the vet etc… Very well trained. Doesn’t have a crate and will stay free roaming in the house while owners are gone. Very well behaved.
