You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Moderate ArthritisAre you looking for twice the love? Beckett and Berkley are a bonded pair who bring out the very best in each other and are hoping to find a forever home together. Beckett and Berkley have both been cat tested but appear to be rather timid and unsure of cats. They also could get along with other calm yet confident dogs around their size. They both love walks, attention, and all the love they can get.  Becket is around 7 years and what we guess to be a mix of a labrador and a golden retriever... what we do know is that is 100% handsome boy! Beckett has moderate arthritis in his back end. If you were to meet him, you may notice he bunny hopes a little when he gets moving too quickly. He has seen a vet and had x-rays to review his needs, with proper weight maintenance and ongoing joint support he should be "golden" into his senior years. Berkley is around 4 years old and is a gentle, timid soul who needs a patient person to help her continue building her confidence. Once she feels safe, her affectionate side shines - she loves attention and being close to her people. She is food and praise motivated, making her a great training partner, and she walks beautifully on a leash.  Together, Berkley and Beckett are the perfect balance - gentle, loyal, and eager to love. If you're looking for a pair that will fill your home with sweetness and companionship, these two are ready to brighten your world. Their adoption fee is $500 and includes their spay/neuter, microchips, current vaccinations and preventatives, plus a free basic training course at Cedar Run #2 in Hiawatha. Last Hope requires that all animals be kept as indoor only pets and that adopters have a history of having kept their pets altered, current on vaccinations and preventatives, and as indoor only pets. Our adoption process includes a background check, home visit, and vet history check. 9/22/26- Update: 🐾Available for Adoption - Skye🐾 We aren't sure why this awesome dog is not in her forever home yet! Her foster mom sent us an update on Skye - 💜PLAY BALL! Skye LOVES her tennis balls so much that she shuns the Kong ones I bought. You should see her FLY over our little bushes in pursuit of her prize! 🌧RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY! Skye likes being outdoors and doesn't mind the rain/mist at all (which is a good thing right now) for playing or getting her business done. 🐾SQUEAK! Skye got a new lambchop toy and squeaks its squeaker at every opportunity! So far she doesn't even try to destroy her dollies in search of the squeak! SIT! Skye is responding really well to the CLICK and hand signal that Clint with Knox Canine Training taught her for SIT. She will come on command and is very treat-oriented! KENNEL! Speaking of treat-oriented, we are practicing kennel time when we are home so she is happier when we are gone. A treat-filled Kong is going a long way toward her staying busy and relaxed. She is also happy to take her meals in her kennel, which is our other strategy to get her excited about going in! She RUNS to her kennel! 💜LOVES! Skye really likes to be petted, especially on her chest and head. She is doing better about craving so much attention and is getting more polite, so the hugging has mostly stopped. ZZZZs! Skye is totally content to get her Zzzzs right beside you on a dog bed and is learning "go lay down." She likes to be reassured you're right there and wants some pets at bedtime but doesn't insist on sleeping with you. We are looking forward to more training sessions with Clint Knox Canine Training! Skye is a precious girl who wants most of all to be loved, and she deserves it! Read her full bio on our website and learn about her forever home requirements. https://grroiowa.org/pet/skye-26-041/ Submit your application today! https://grroiowa.org/adoption-information/ **** 9/1/26: We are currently seeking a dedicated home for one of our latest foster dogs. She is a beautiful, intelligent princess who requires a structured environment to truly thrive. Could your home be the perfect match for her next chapter? The Ideal Setup: Solo Pet: Must be the only dog or cat in the household. She wants to receive all of your love and attention. Secured Yard: A physical fence is strictly required for her safety and exercise. Family Dynamic: Suitable for families with older children only (ages 10 and up). Environment: A consistent, predictable daily routine is highly recommended to help her feel secure. Personality, Quirks, & Overview: Breed & Age: 5.5-year-old Golden Retriever (weighing approximately 65 lbs). Activity Level: High energy. She thoroughly enjoys long walks, structured playtime, and mental stimulation. Activity: She is highly vocal and will bark at other dogs while on leash. However, she is making excellent progress and currently crushing her distraction training. Toy Connoisseur: She loves having her toys out of the toy box and accessible at all times. Alert System: She is vocal, but she settles down quickly. Human Hugger: She is working hard on her manners and learning not to jump or hug humans when excited. This sweet, active dog is ready for her next chapter. She will make an incredibly loyal companion for an experienced handler who can provide the structure and training consistency she deserves.

Story
Hi, I’m Tango — an 8-year-old Goldendoodle with a golden heart, a goofy grin, and a deep passion for belly rubs, road trips, and balls (especially the squeaky kind). In September 2023, I suffered a spinal stroke that left my back legs paralyzed. My family loved me so much, but they knew I needed more care than they could give, so in April 2024, they entrusted me to the amazing team at APL and that’s when my comeback story really began. Since then, I’ve made incredible, unexpected progress. With regular rehab, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, and lots of encouragement, I’ve gone from scooting to walking with help, and sometimes even on my own! I can cruise around with and without my custom wheels like a champ, especially if there’s a ball to chase or an adventure to be had. And speaking of adventures….I’ve recently made a pretty big move. I’m now living in Colorado at a canine health resort alongside other differently-abled dogs like me. I get to soak up the fresh mountain air, continue my therapies, and spend my days building the sweetest friendships. It’s been such a special experience, and I’m thriving here. I’m still available for adoption through my rescue, and we’re hoping this new chapter helps me meet even more people, maybe even "my" people. The more folks who hear my story, the better the chance that someone out there knows exactly where I belong. Back to the fun stuff! I’m always ready to go. I love car rides, public outings, strolls through the park, and pretty much anywhere my people are headed. I’ll happily roll up to a brewery, hop into a café, or join you for a sunny patio lunch. I’m not picky, as long as I’m included. I also happen to be the world’s most enthusiastic ball-chaser. I may have some mobility challenges, but if there’s a ball in play, you better believe I’m going after it. I’ve got a mean fetch game and determination like no other. People are my other favorite thing. I’m incredibly social, gentle, and friendly with everyone I meet (kids, adults, other dogs…) I’m just happy to be part of the fun. I don’t chew things I shouldn’t, and I’m always ready to cuddle. I do need a little help with potty time a few times a day, but I’ve even started doing that more on my own lately. My team will show you the ropes and it’s easier than you might think. I'm looking for a family that sees beyond my different abilities and appreciates my incredible spirit. A household that’s patient, loving, and ready to welcome me just as I am. I promise to reward you with boundless love, endless joy, and a companionship that runs deep. If you're looking for a loyal, loving sidekick with a story of resilience, a wag that never quits, and a suitcase packed for life’s next big adventure, I’m your guy. So, what do you say? Want to roll through life with me? Tango is up to date on vaccinations, 4DX tested, microchipped, and neutered. He will come with all his cool gadgets so you can easily take him along on adventures. Applications to meet Tango can be submitted at: https://www.aplanimalrescue.org/dogs
