Mango is a very sweet and sensitive 6-year-old Golden Retriever! She spent the first 6 years of her life as a breeding dog at a puppy mill. The environment of a puppy mill has left Mango sensitive to loud noises and fast movements; but her curiosity wins out over fear every time. She is looking for a patient and loving family to continue her journey of learning about the world around her and building her confidence! This sweet girl is a joy to foster. She loves meeting new people and attention and will seek it out. She is timid around people at first but that doesn’t stop her from meeting them and demanding their attention. She loves meeting other dogs but sometimes need to corrected on proper dog manners; she can come on too strong. She takes redirection as well though. She is curious but needs some encouragement to explore her environment. Mango is still figuring toys out and tends to interact with them when she is alone or someone isn’t in the room. When in a new environment, she will carry around a stuffy to help ease her anxiety but once she feels comfortable, she doesn’t pay attention to the toy. She is showing interest, she just doesn’t understand how to play yet. Mango isn’t interested in stealing shoes or clothing, she’s more interested in stealing your attention! One thing Mango LOVES her walks! It took no time for her to get used to being on a leash and now her walks are her favourite time of day. She has zero sense of urgency on her walks, like in life, she prefers a slow languid walk where she can sniff and meander at her pleasure. She loves to be close to her foster mum and can be demanding of attention at times; so, will need clear boundaries set to help continue that confidence. Mango really enjoys her new world, so pushes through her fears, she’s a brave girl with a big heart! Mango’s crate training has been a journey! What we have discovered is that she prefers a crate that is perfect for her size and not an inch bigger (she’s basically goldilocks); but with the right crate she will go right in and make herself at home. As she is still timid, getting her out of her crate takes a bit of coaxing and she sometimes returns to her crate if she is feeling uncomfortable. Her crate training is ongoing, but she prefers to be out of her crate when her people are home. She is fine to be crated while her people are at work but would prefer not to be left for a full workday. Someone who can come home at lunch or people who work opposite schedules would be best. Mango isn’t a big eater; she eats on her own time and prefers to eat alone at this time so leaving the food in a crate or spot for her will help ensure she will eat. Mango’s adoptive family will need to be patient and support her as she adjusts to her new home. She is a smart girl but doesn’t always like to be handled straight on, so traditional training methods for sit and down haven’t been successful, but using other methods have been very successful! Mango sometimes doesn’t like it when you are behind her and needs some reassurance that you aren’t scary. As a result, Mango can be described as “awkward”, or in other words, she has her peculiarities. Sometimes she is all up for attention, sometimes she prefers to lay unbothered by the sofa. Mango has been on lots of car rides and has hated each and every one!! She gets car sick if she is not in a crate regardless of eating times and patterns. She will eagerly go in the crate and the car and will lie down and “enjoy” the ride. Right now, car rides are to be tolerated and not enjoyed and crate will be needed to help her adjust. The more car rides the more she will adjust but we can’t guarantee she will out grow the car sickness! There is car sickness medication that can be obtained from the vet, but for us, she travels in her crate and that is what works for her. Her house training has gone very well; happy to share zero accidents in the house! It is expected that she will have some regression when she goes to a new home but will quickly catch on to the new schedule and do her business outside. Mango would do best with an adult only home, or one with gentle teens who can be sensitive to her fears and be patient as she adjusts to her new home. Mango needs to be an only dog in the home, she wants to be the center of the universe. We have introduced Mango to a very dog savvy cat and she was very appropriate with her. We feel that Mango would do fine in a home with a dog savvy cat that won’t react to her or swat at her. One that would ignore her and coexist with her nicely would be fine. Mango is looking for a family who will help get her out of her shell and develop her confidence. She has come a long way; she loves meeting new people and will introduce herself to anyone and everyone! I think she will be a goofy girl once she has an opportunity to feel safe with her new lucky family! She won’t be a dog suited to a first time dog owner, but for those experienced with dogs, and who love Goldens and have the patience and caring to give this sweet mature girl a loving retirement home while gently exposing her to the wide world around her, she will be such a joy. She is already grown so much in confidence in the weeks we have had her; give this dog more time to learn about all things dog and she will continue to blossom into the confident dog we know is in there! #rescuedismyfavoritebreed #rescuedog #adoptdontshop #pounddogs #pdr14years #pounddogrescue14yearsstrong Name: Mango ID # PDR1522 Age: 6yrs Gender: female Spayed: yes UTD vaccines: yes Breed: Golden Retriever Colours: cream Coat length: med House trained: yes Special needs: no OK with kids: teens OK with cats: yes Ok with dogs: no Status: adoptable Microchip: yes Size: large Location: Kitchener Adoption fee: $700

Story
Hello! My name is Ollie!I`m a wonderful pup with a great demeanor and lots of love to give! My GHS friends don`t know anything about my parents, therefore it`s unclear how big I will get but my new humans should be prepared for a medium-large dog just to be on the safe side. I am friendly and enjoy meeting new people, even children who are respectful. However, I have shown some uncertainty around men. Therefore, I would love humans who will help me learn that men aren`t scary by making sure they give me space and interact at my pace. I have very long legs, great for running! I`m smart as a whip and love to learn. I`m looking for a home that has the time, patience and energy for a puppy and puppy training.MY IDEAL HOME INVOLVES…CHILDREN: Yes, with respectful children.OTHER DOGS: Yes, a well-socialized dog would be great to help show me the ropes in life!CATS: Yes, with a cat who won`t be nervous of my puppy energy. FIRST-TIME DOG OWNERS: Yes, if you have done your puppy homework on all the things that come with a puppy - house-training, chewing, jumping, etc.FENCED-IN YARD: Not required but a safe space to run would be great!HOUSING ENVIRONMENT: Any, as long as you have a realistic plan for my exercise.SOMEONE HOME MOST OF THE DAY: In the beginning, I would be best set up for success being left only a few hours at a time.SOME OTHER THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ME…ACTIVITY LEVEL: Medium puppy energy.HOUSE-TRAINED: I`m on the right track but will require ongoing work on house-training to get me all the way there. If you think I would make a good match for your home, click the “Adopt Me” button to apply!
