Story
Archie is a Courtesy Listing and is not housed at the Animal Shelter. Please note that the City of Bloomington Animal Care & Control accepts no responsibility for this pet. Potential adopters are responsible for communicating directly with the pet's guardian. We are carefully looking for the right forever home for our beloved dog, Archie. We are in no hurry and want to find a family who will love him as much as we do, provide him with an excellent quality of life, and be committed to caring for him and any medical needs he may have as he ages. Archie is an 8-year-old, 70-pound Sheepadoodle (Old English Sheepdog/Poodle) who does not shed. He is microchipped, up-to-date on vaccinations (except Bordetella, as we don't board him), and recently had a professional dental cleaning. Archie is incredibly sweet, affectionate, and loves being around people. He truly doesn't have a mean bone in his body. He loves cuddling, going on car rides, meeting visitors, and simply being near his family. He is highly trained, fully house-trained, and knows numerous commands and tricks including sit, shake, leave it, roll over, walking backwards, freezing, and twirling. He loves visitors and gets excited when people come over, but settles down when asked, though he may need a reminder or two to go lay down because he's eager to be part of the action. He is great with children and enjoys being part of family life. When play becomes very exciting, he may occasionally playfully mouth, but this has never been aggressive. If play with children becomes too high-energy, we've found that Archie benefits from taking a break to rest while everyone settles down. He also makes a good watchdog and will alert you when someone comes to the door. This decision has been incredibly difficult for us. We've had Archie since he was a puppy and love him dearly. Since welcoming our son, we've realized that Archie is no longer receiving the level of attention and quality of life he deserves. We believe he would thrive in a home where he can once again be a central part of daily life. We want to be fully transparent about his care needs: • Archie has hip dysplasia in both hips, which we have successfully managed by avoiding running, jumping, rough play with other dogs, and other high-impact activities. • He has a compulsive paw-licking habit when left alone. To prevent irritation, we put a cone on him overnight and when we're away from home, which has worked very well. Without the cone, excessive licking can irritate his paws and potentially lead to infection. • Like many doodles, he can be prone to ear infections, seasonal allergies, and has a sensitive stomach. We manage these with routine ear cleaning, occasional Cytopoint injections, and sensitive-stomach food. Archie is accustomed to being walked for bathroom breaks four times daily and wears a Gentle Leader on walks because he sometimes pulls and gets excited when he sees other dogs. He enjoys other dogs but, because of his hip dysplasia, we avoid dog parks and rough play situations. Some dogs don't always respond well to his enthusiastic greeting style, so we prefer calmer interactions. Archie has always been our only pet. He has not lived with cats, so we do not know how he would do in a home with them. When we travel, we use Rover sitters instead of boarding facilities because we prefer that Archie receives more one-on-one attention and a calmer environment. To help make his transition easier, Archie will come with his bed, bowls, toys, remaining food, leash, collar, Gentle Leader, cone, car restraint, veterinary records, and other supplies. We will also assist with transferring his microchip information. Our greatest priority is finding Archie a loving, stable home where he will be cherished for the rest of his life. We are taking our time with this process because finding the right fit is far more important to us than finding a quick placement. Archie has been a treasured member of our family for eight years, and we are committed to finding him a home where he will continue to be loved, spoiled, and cared for for the rest of his life. **Note, he currently has short hair but his hair grows quite long and will need grooming** If you're interested in Archie, we'd be happy to talk with you and answer any questions. If you are interested in Archie, please email: krystaloha@gmail.com. PLEASE CONTACT OWNER DIRECTLY
