Story
Meet George and Piper! George is a devoted three-year-old Great Pyrenees/Saint Bernard mix and Piper is a joyful two-year-old Pharaoh Hound/American Pitbull Terrier mix, both currently in Hickory, NC. Together, they are a heartwarming study in contrast and connection. George with his quiet strength and soulful gaze, and Piper with her spark, resilience, and endless affection! George’s presence is as steady and soulful as the mountains that surround him. With a striking tricolor coat and a towering yet gentle stature at 112 pounds, George is a beautiful blend of loyalty, intelligence, and quiet strength. Though his early life was harsh and lonely, George has spent the last 15 months with a foster family who helped him rediscover what it means to be safe, loved, and understood. He’s not a dog who demands constant cuddles. He’s the type who’ll quietly lay at your feet while you’re cooking dinner, or settle beside you on the floor as you unwind with a movie. His affection is deep, and when he chooses to show it, it’s a moment you won’t forget! And then there's Piper, the sunshine in George’s sky! At just 31 pounds, Piper is compact but full of life, with a sleek brown coat, white chest, and eyes that gleam with curiosity. Once neglected she now radiates joy, trust, and boundless energy. She loves people, delights in play, and excels at cuddling close! Her favorite games include keep-away with toys, and she greets familiar faces with an infectious mix of wiggles, hugs, and tail wags. Piper is house-trained, crate-trained, and knows sit, down, and stay. While she thrives with activity, she’s also content to snooze beside her favorite person or pup. George is house-trained, leash-savvy, and knows several commands like sit, down, shake, easy, and stay. He thrives on predictability and responds beautifully to gentle guidance and clear routines. He enjoys human companionship but also values having his own space. He’s the kind of dog who builds bonds slowly, and once you're in his circle, you're there for life! Piper, on the other hand, is the social butterfly of the duo. She’s friendly to strangers, wonderful with children, and very good with other dogs. Her love for George is clear in how she encourages him to play, rest, and trust. Though she may need slow introductions with cats or small animals, her gentle spirit suggests she’ll learn with patience and care. Like many pups, she’s sensitive to loud sounds like fireworks and thunder, and will appreciate a cozy retreat when things get noisy. Because of his sensitive nature and past experiences, George is most compatible with a calm, structured environment and a guardian who understands that trust isn’t instant, it’s built over time. He’s not suited to apartments or small condos; he needs room to roam, think, and feel secure. While he has made remarkable emotional progress, it's important to note that George had one fear-based bite incident during a meet-and-greet. A well-meaning visitor moved too quickly into his space and repeatedly patted his head, a sensitive area for George due to past trauma. In a separate instance, George snapped (without making contact) when a new person leaned in face-to-face with him in an unfamiliar environment, a clear signal that he needs space and time to feel safe before close physical contact. A professional trainer evaluated him and confirmed that George is not aggressive but is a sensitive, thoughtful dog reacting in ways consistent with his breed and background. The trainer described him as a "normal dog" with a deep soul and a big heart who simply needs a patient and caring guide. His compassionate trainers have kindly offered to support his future family with video or phone consultations. Together, George and Piper create a beautiful balance! Her joy lifts him, and his calm centers her. They nap together, play together, and find comfort in each other’s presence. If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to witness true companionship, look no further than these two gentle souls! George has also shown some food-related guarding tendencies, so mealtime management and a thoughtful setup will support his continued growth. George may be most compatible in a home without other male dogs, though he has a beautiful, balanced friendship with Piper, a playful female companion who encourages his confidence and joy. While George and Piper would love to be adopted together if the opportunity allows, they are also available separately. Each is ready for a new chapter in a home that understands their individual personalities and unique needs. Could your home be the peaceful landing place George has been waiting for? Story
Hi! We are a group of seven pups who traveled all the way from a shelter in South Carolina to Big Dog Ranch, hoping for a second chance at life. We're not the tiny, fluffy puppies everyone rushes to adopt. We're what people call "teenagers." Sometimes that means we're overlooked because we're no longer babies. But we hope you'll look a little deeper, because our hearts are just as full of love. Life before the ranch wasn't always easy. We learned to survive instead of simply being puppies. One thing we're still working on is sharing our food. When you've spent your life wondering where your next meal will come from, it's hard to believe there will always be enough. We know it isn't the right way to feel, but every day we're learning that we don't have to be afraid anymore. With patience, kindness, and full bowls, we're beginning to trust that tomorrow will bring another meal. Since arriving at Big Dog Ranch, we've discovered what it feels like to be safe. We have soft beds, full bellies, medical care, and people who believe in us. We're dog-friendly, love meeting new people, and every day we're learning new skills that will help us become wonderful family companions. We're so thankful to everyone at Big Dog Ranch for never giving up on us and for showing us that love, patience, and understanding can heal even the deepest fears. Now all that's missing is a family to call our own. We promise that if you give us a chance, we'll spend the rest of our lives showing you just how grateful we are. Could one of us be the missing piece of your family?
