Himalayan kittens & cats in Moody, Alabama

Appearance:Conrad is a beautiful 10+ lb male Himalayan with a thick chocolate/seal point coat and blue eyes. His fur is thick and does need brushing so that he does not develop mats or tangles. Behavior:With strangers, he is territorial and can be reactive if he feels threatened, meaning he is not above being a little aggressive or bite. He requires a lot of patience to win over his trust which means slow movements around him, letting him approach you and he is one who does NOT want to be picked up. He does not want to be crowded and is not a fan of being extended direct eye contact, which is easy to do with his gorgeous blue eye color. He is also spooked easily with loud or sudden noises.He does have “tells”. The end of the tail that suddenly starts twitching, or with eye contact and he suddenly goes still and the stare intensifies. Those are all precursors to a nip or swipe. Quickly removing from his presence is enough to de-escalate.With time (approximately a month after being liberated from a high kill shelter where he was surrendered when his owner fell ill) he has shown quite a bit of affection. As long as you let him come to you, he’ll lay down by your side and lean heavily against you. He will clearly have “his people” and will be loyal and sweet. His foster's impression is that he enjoys social interaction. He will nearly knock you over rubbing against you. He purrs and has a high pitched chirp and mew for such a large cat. He just needs to be the one who sets the pace.Food, Litter, FurnitureHe is a somewhat picky eater and prefers *Nutrish dry food (chicken and brown rice) (found at Piggly Wiggly and some specialty pet shops like Petsmart). He does not like wet cat food at all, which makes him super easy to care for. Doesn’t seem to care for treats. Very good water drinker. Very good litter box habits, not a single mess outside despite all the transitions. Not a single destructive behavior on furniture. Ideal toys have feathers or dangly bits, like on a fishing pole or wand that you can wave around. He likes being able to look outside the windows.Other Pets or Children:Given the triggers above especially noise and looming, we cannot recommend him for a home with young children. Older teenagers and young adults should be fine as long as they respect him! He has been introduced to other cats in his foster home and has been curious and shown no aggression towards them. We believe with friendly social cats he would get on well. We get the sense that an elderly golden retriever who didn’t bother anyone and didn’t bark would be fine. While a small loud energetic chihuahua could be an issue. Vet visitsHe was not a fan of being groomed at the vet or visiting the vet. He did best with a little sedation but this is not totally uncommon for some cats. Ideal HomeHis ideal setting would be a quiet, adult only home. He does have aversion to loud noises. The adopter would need to spend enough time and patience with him, meaning weeks if not months of letting him come to them, passive attention is the winner. Not worrying if he spends time hanging out in a closet or to your side vs. on your lap.
