Story
***The first step in the adoption process is to complete the application at www.emmetcountyanimalshelter.org If you follow us on Facebook you have already met Ribbit or at least the first part of his story.  Ribbit was first noticed by a farmer on a gravel road.  In watching him and his behavior it became pretty clear that Ribbit didn't know how to get home and we were suspicious that he had been left behind by someone.  Although he seemed friendly and open to meeting people, as soon as he got close enough to see that you were not the person he was waiting for he would just stop wagging his tail, turn around and trot off in the opposite direction.  Our team has successfully trapped several dogs in the past and we set out to give trapping Ribbit our best shot.  Day after day, night after night we had volunteers monitor the trap and put fresh offerings of delicious food in and around the trap.  One family with two small children would cook him breakfast everyday or pick up sandwiches from Hardees because that was certain to entice him. Alas, it did not and then as quickly as he appeared he was gone.  Not sure what to think but certainly no positive thoughts came to mind our stomachs sunk and our hearts ached for the skinny chocolate guy we now loved and called Ribbit.  Much to our surprise a few days later we started receiving calls and messages on Facebook about a skinny brown dog on the black top and could we help.  Not expecting this dog to be that dog, we put out a message asking travelers to be careful of the dog in the ditch at the busy intersection out of town and if someone would snap a photo of him that would be helpful so we could find his family.  Well, the photos came in and sure enough it was OUR skinny brown dog with the funny ears that crooked off to the side!  It was Ribbit!!! Soon after we had a call from Dispatch at the Sheriff's department.  A man living near a small lake 8 miles away from where we had been trying to trap before had called in and said he had a friendly brown dog in his yard and was anyone missing it?   The dispatcher being one that kept up on the shelter's page and what/who was missing or found told the gentleman to try to secure that dog because it was the one the shelter had been trying to trap for over a week now!  The guy put some food out and his dog and Ribbit came up for a snack and a play date.  While Ribbit was focused on the food, the man slipped the collar off of his own dog and onto Ribbit while quickly attaching a tie out lead.  With Ribbit secured we headed out his way to pick up Ribbit and bring him back to the shelter.  He was happy when we got there and with a little boost he was loaded up and ready to go!  Ribbit has been loving, appreciative and excited about everything and everyone since the moment he got here.  He is about 50 pounds and we think he might be a lab/springer mix.  He is friendly with other dogs.  Doesn't seem to notice the cats and is super sweet.  He keeps a clean kennel and knows a few basic commands.  He does have a lot of energy but we estimate that he may only be just over a year so that's still some puppy wiggles that he has in him.  Ribbit can bark really loud and we feel he would not be a good fit for an apartment.  He would do best in a home with another dog to keep him company if the humans have to go to work.  He is a gentle boy that is eager to please and catches on quickly.  Ribbit is neutered, up to date on vaccinations and microchipped.  His adoption fee is $275.00May 2, 2024, 5:37 pm
