Story
Meet Marcy! At 9 years young, this lovely Lab/Retriever mix is proof that age is just a number. Marcy is a full-figured gal with a big heart and an even bigger love for her people. She’s the kind of companion who will happily follow you around the yard, tail wagging the whole time, just enjoying being near you.Marcy already knows how to sit for treats (which she’s very motivated by!) and walks nicely on leash, though she can get a little enthusiastic and pull at times—she just gets excited to explore the world with you. She appears to be house trained and settles in well, making her an easy addition to a loving home. One of her favorite pastimes? Cooling off with a splash in a kiddie pool on a warm day! This sweet girl knows how to enjoy the simple things in life and would love a family to share them with.Marcy is a beautiful, loving soul who’s ready to spend her golden years by your side. She’ll go home up to date on vaccines, spayed, and microchipped—completely ready to start her next chapter.Could Marcy be the perfect match for you? Apply today to meet this wonderful girl and see if she’s your new best friend! This dog is currently being fostered at the Penitentiary of New Mexico through our Fosters in the Pen program, a lifesaving partnership with the New Mexico Corrections Department. Foster dogs are placed with trained incarcerated participants to increase shelter capacity while dogs learn basic crate, potty and leash skills and receive daily enrichment and consistent human interaction that helps them show their true personalities outside of the shelter setting. This unique program not only improves a dog’s chances of adoption, but also provides meaningful work, rehabilitation, and learning opportunities for inmates—creating second chances on both sides of the leash.Submit an application to schedule a meet and greet!

Story
Harry is a happy, good-natured goofball who absolutely loves being around other dogs and people. He’s the kind of dog who brings joy wherever he goes — playful outside, naptime inside, and always ready to make you smile. His favorite things are dog friends, toys, and a cozy place to relax after a fun day. Harry’s adoption fee includes his neuter, vaccines, deworming, and microchip. He was born November 19, 2022 on one of the reservations we work with and has been growing into a confident, social boy in foster care. He’s crate trained and sleeps well through the night. Because he eats a little fast, he uses a slow-feeder bowl (an easy $10 solution), and he does great with routine. We believe he is a Lab, Cattledog, Chow and his middle name is 'play' ;-) Harry would thrive in a home in the Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, White Rock, or Los Alamos area with another friendly dog who enjoys playtime as much as he does.  If you think Harry might be a good fit for your family, please email desertpawsnm@gmail.com to check availability and start the application process. We’d love to introduce you and your dogs to this joyful boy and settle-in to his forever home.March 10, 2026, 6:59 pm

Story
Smokey is a quiet dog with a gentle, soulful heart. He came to us from a family living on one of the reservations we work with after suffering a severe injury that required immediate medical attention. Today, Smokey is safe, fully healed, and has no ongoing medical issues. His journey has been long, and he is now ready to be cherished by a family who will love him for the steady, loyal companion he is. Smokey is wonderful with his bedding, always arranging it just the way he likes it. He is polite with his food and clearly appreciates his humans. He is acquainted with older children. He enjoys basking in the sun outdoors, curling up comfortably inside, and will occasionally bark to let you know if something doesn’t sound quite right. For walks and hikes, Smokey prefers a comfortable, secure harness rather than a collar, as his throat and neck were the areas that originally required medical care and can still be sensitive. Smokey’s adoption fee includes his neuter, vaccines, deworming, and microchip. We believe he is about five years old. Smokey would thrive in a home in the Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, White Rock, or Los Alamos area with a calm person or family who has the patience to let him build trust at his own pace. Once Smokey chooses you as his person/family, he will be your most loyal and devoted companion. If you think Smokey might be a good fit for your family, please email desertpawsnm@gmail.com to check availability and start the application process. We would love to introduce you to this beautiful boy and help him find the safe, loving home he so deeply deserves.March 10, 2026, 6:59 pm

Story
The Boy Who Refused to Break: Meet Doodle Bob They say a dog’s coat tells the story of their life. When Doodle Bob first walked through our doors, his story was a heartbreak written in matted fur, tangled sticks, and sharp stickers. He was a prisoner of his own coat—every movement, every step, and every breath caused him sharp pain as the mats pulled at his skin. He didn’t know what a soft bed was. He didn't know that a human hand could offer anything other than a reason to hide. He lived a life of survival on the cold streets, where he learned that the world was a scary, lonely place. ✂️ A Transformation of Spirit One of our wonderful vets stepped in to give him a "fresh start" in the most literal sense. They spent hours shaving away the weight of his past. While our vet friends are heroes, they aren't groomers—so Doodle Bob is currently rocking a bit of a "choppy" look. But to us? He has never looked more beautiful. That uneven coat is a symbol of his survival and the beginning of his healing. Just like his namesake from the Magic Pencil, he looks a little hand-drawn and a bit out of proportion right now. But as SpongeBob said: "He’s just a two-dimensional creature lost in our three-dimensional aquatic world!" Our Doodle Bob is a little lost, too. His "sketchy" haircut is just a badge of honor for the masterpiece he is becoming. A Heart in Hiding Doodle Bob is a 2-year-old Doodle mix, but in many ways, he is still a lost puppy looking for a way home. The Fear: He came to us completely terrified. The world is still very big and very loud to him. The Touch: He isn’t quite ready for pets or snuggles yet. He still flinches when he sees a hand reach out, a haunting reminder of the life he left behind. The Hope: Despite everything he’s been through, he is trying. We see the sparkle of curiosity in his eyes and the way he’s slowly learning to trust. We couldn’t be more proud of the bravery he shows every single day. Will You Be His Safe Harbor? Doodle Bob doesn't need a fancy house or a big yard as much as he needs time. He needs a family who will look at his uneven fur and his shy spirit and say, "It’s okay, we’ll wait for you." Doodle Bob’s Needs - Your Promise Patience - You’ll let him move at his own pace. Understanding - You’ll love him even before he can love you back. Security - You’ll be the soft place he finally gets to lay his head.  Doodle Bob is neutered, fully vaccinated, and waiting for the person who will finally prove to him that he is worthy of love.  Could you be his person? Doodle Bob needs a home where "patience" is the love language. He needs a family who will celebrate the small wins—like the first time he initiates a sniff or the first time he wags his tail. If you have the heart to help this boy find his confidence, Doodle Bob is ready to draw a path straight to your heart. May 6, 2026, 5:43 pm
