Story
Eve came into our rescue on Christmas Eve. She was found as a stray in horrific condition with anemia, severe skin, ear, eye and mouth infections. The matting so extreme on her frail body that she had to be carefully shaved under sedation. The neglect she endured is unimaginable. Over the past 6 weeks she has shown us her resilience and has overcome so much. The anemia is gone, skin and eye infections resolved, she’s been spayed, had her teeth cleaned (2 teeth extracted) and is fully vaccinated. She will need ongoing treatment for her ear infections caused by a resistant strain of bacteria (pseudomonas). Eve was very reactive to having the twice a day ear treatment which was going to have to be done for 4-6 weeks. We had to switch to a BNT treatment where the ear canal is packed with a thick ointment and rechecked in two weeks. This treatment is less effective for the type of infection she currently has but was the only option at this point. We are looking into the possibility of getting a similar type of ointment that is specific for pseudomonas ear infections. For Eve this had to be done under light sedation so her ears could be cleaned and the ointment packed in the ears. This will likely need to be repeated again in 2 weeks. UPDATE: We have the new medication and will start it next week. We have to wait 10 days from the last treatment. Eve’s adopters will need to understand the importance of having her ears checked on a regular basis and treated as needed since this type of infection is prone to recurring. In spite of everything she’s endured, Eve is 9 pounds of sweetness! 💖A playful, happy and loving little girl! She is a Maltese mix, around 3 years old. Eve is good with other well-mannered dogs. A home with another dog is preferred. Good with cats. Children over the age of 10. She is very curious and loves to explore the yard. A securely fenced yard (no electric/invisible fences) is preferred. Eve is still working on house training. She is doing well when kept on a regular schedule but still has accidents. This will require understanding and patience. She has started playing with toys and loves emptying the toy box 🧸🦴🪀🐾 Not fully evaluated on leash walks yet which has been deferred due to cold weather and recovery time needed for surgeries. She is a little skittish in new situations (like going through doors). Story
Hi, my name is Apollo! I am a spicy little guy who can also be quite sweet once I get to know you. I came to BCHS in very bad condition due to extreme fur matting because of a lack of grooming, and one of my legs had to be removed because of the serious injury this caused me. I am getting around great now, and I feel awesome! I have been living with a foster family while undergoing my medical treatments, and I also have been learning to trust someone enough to let them groom me. I was adopted once after all my treatments were completed but I was not a good fit for the family as they had a very busy home with lots of visitors. This caused me stress and fear, and my behavior became difficult for them to manage. The family made the best choice for me by returning me to the shelter so that a home that would be a better fit for me could be found. *I am currently in a foster home! Please contact the shelter if you`d like to meet me* In my foster home, I have lived with cats, and I really like them! I also have been living with other dogs, and I simply adore them, but I can be a bit pushy with my attention, so they all may not appreciate me. I can be feisty sometimes, but I’m small, a little bit fragile, and tend to get underfoot especially when I get excited about something like mealtimes or my people coming home, and in my excitement, I circle your feet and tug at your pantleg or shoe. I can be unsure of new people at first, but once I get to know you, I love to snuggle with you on the couch and generally be with you wherever you are. My foster parents are working with me on my house training, but I will continue to need patience and help with this in my forever home. I have pee accidents but have never had a poop accident and wear belly bands to help with this in foster. My ideal home is adults only, and my owners should be experienced with small dogs who have fear-based behavior issues. My home should not be one where there are a lot of visitors, new people make me nervous, and I need space and time to get to make friends on my own terms. I have a history of not being good with children so there should be no children in the home and they should not be frequent visitors. I would do my best in a home with other dogs, they help me to relax and know that I am safe. I can be an acquired taste for some dogs though, so the existing dogs in the home should be gentle while also good at giving appropriate correction. Because of his hist
