Story
Punky is a beautiful female Mastiff/Boxer mix who was surrendered by her family on July 15, 2024 (and unfortunately that is not a typographical error on the year 2024 since Punky has been in our shelter for nearly 1-1/2 years). Punky was 3-years old when she came to HSOV and is currently 4-years+ Punky has a brown short smooth coat with a large white bib on her chest, white paws, a long tail, and an adorable symmetrically-marked face with black shading around her brown soulful 'teddy bear' eyes, a black button nose, a chubby muzzle, and semi-erect ears. Her family told us that Punky had been in their home since she was a 6-week old puppy. Punky is good with her people friends (including children). She is selective about which dogs she included in her circle of friends. Punky is not good with feline friends. When she was in her home, Punky's exercise routine consisted of spending time in the fenced-in yard, but her favorite routine was being a lap dog (smile). When she was frightened, Punky would climb in bed with her people. Punky's favorite pastimes were cuddling on the couch and enjoying stuffed toys. Punky has become a favorite of many of our kennel tech/shelter staff as well as volunteers. Punky has also made some doggy friends at HSOV and especially loves to walk with Spice (a neutered male brindle/white Boxer/Pit Bull Terrier mix) when they each have a kennel tech/volunteer walking them side-by-side on leashes. Punky was spayed on September 29, 2025 and was also given rabies vaccine. She weighed 68.2 lbs that day. These updated photos of Punky were taken on October 11, 2025 when HSOV Volunteer Jennie Payton Sherrard spent time with Punky in our outdoor photo area. Punky LOVES to spend time in the green grass, so she chose to 'sit pretty' or leisurely stretch out and simply look adorable in most of her new glamour pictures. Punk displayed her sweet disposition and loved attention (and 'good girl' treats) from her fan club members who were nearby. Punky was recently the first runner-up in an AI-generated Halloween Costume contest which featured several HSOV dogs. Punky was a cute Flower Child/Hippie and donned the costume well .. And she was treated to a special day away from the shelter to celebrate her second-place win in the contest thanks to HSOV Volunteers Alicia Byrd and Matt Carlisle. Punky dreams of winning the "I Found The Best Home Ever" Lottery .. And that someone special will complete/submit an HSOV Adoption (or Foster) Application with her name at the top (smile). Punky's adoption fee has been sponsored~ Punky went home with a foster family on October 30, 2025 who plans to adopt her if all goes well. Unfortunately Punky came back to our shelter on November 4th. Punky was good with the family's older children but was anxious around the infant/baby in her foster home .. And Punky displayed severe separation anxiety issues. So she is looking for a home without young children and with a family who could help her overcome her separation anxiety when left alone. And Punky was still working on her housetraining routine.

Story
Shetland is a beautiful 4-year old+ female Mastiff mix old+ who was brought to the HSOV on October 21, 2025 by a Good Samaritan who had found her along State Route 26 in Washington County Ohio. Shetland was not wearing a collar, and she was not microchipped. This lovely girl has a tan short smooth coat with a coarse texture, a long tail, and an adorable face with soulful brown eyes, subtle black/white shading on her large muzzle, and short floppy ears. Shetland weighs 79 lbs and epitomizes the oft-used phrase 'gentle giant' (smile). Shetland walks fairly well on a leash and was ready for an outing with HSOV Volunteer Carla Perry when these photos were taken on October 28, 2025. Shetland is an accomplished 'howler' with a melodious voice which was music to Carla's ears, so naturally she offered to take Shetland for a walk and also to give her extra TLC ... And the paparazzi tagged along when she saw an opportunity to take out-of-kennel pictures of Shetland. We noticed while Shetland was enjoying her adventure that she appears to be hearing- and perhaps vision-impaired. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Shetland was held for the mandatory three-day stray hold so that her family would have an opportunity to reclaim her with proof of ownership. Since she was not reclaimed, Shetland is now available for foster or foster-to-adopt. She will be spayed before an adoption is finalized. Update: Shetland went home with a foster family on November 8th who offered her a temporary home while she awaits her forever home. If you would like to meet Shetland in person, please complete an HSOV foster/adoption application for approval so that we may arrange a meet-and-greet with Shetland. Be prepared to fall in love with this big sweetheart.

Story
Moose and Hazard are a pair of best friends who were brought to the HSOV on October 24, 2024 by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden. Moose and Hazard had shared the same home and have been kept in safe-keeping custody since their arrival in our shelter. Both boys are now available for adoption since their owner surrendered Moose and Hazard to the dog warden/HSOV on September 3, 2025. Moose is a 9-year old male Bull Mastiff. He has a fawn-colored short smooth coat, a docked tail, and a gorgeous Mastiff face with dark brown eyes, a black mask, black shading on his broad muzzle, a black velvet nose, and short floppy ears. Moose weighed 92 lbs when he entered our shelter and was already neutered. Hazard is a 10-year old male Shepherd. He has a blond short smooth coat, a long tail, and a beautiful Shepherd face with dark brown eyes, a slender muzzle, a chocolate brown nose, and extra-large erect ears. Hazard weighed 77 lbs when he entered our shelter. His owner reported that Hazard is NOT good with cats~ Moose and Hazard have shared a large suite in our Safe-Keeping Building since their arrival where they have access to a private outdoor 'patio'. Moose and Hazard are being listed as a Bonded Pair since we feel that it it is their best interest to find another home together. These photos were taken on October 26, 2024 through the large window on the door of Moose and Hazard's 'bachelor pad' while HSOV Lead Kennel Emily Beaver spent time with them so that we would have photos for their kennel cards. Moose gave Emily several 'bear hugs' and reached out to her for extra TLC. We wanted to share these photos asap so that potential adopters would know that these senior guys are in our shelter and are looking for a fabulous home. Hazard underwent surgery on January 15th 2025 for the removal of a couple of masses on his lower back. He was also neutered and given rabies vaccine while under anesthesia We will plan on taking updated photos now that they boys are adoptable.

Story
Knox is a handsome one-year old male Mastiff/Labrador Retriever mix who was brought to the HSOV on February 24, 2024 by a Good Samaritan who had found him on Boulevard Drive in Belpre Ohio the preceding evening. Knox was wearing a collar but, unfortunately, there was neither an ID tag nor a dog license tag on his collar ... And he was not microchipped. Knox has a black short smooth coat with white markings on his chest, white toes on his paws, a long tail, and a gorgeous face with dark brown 'teddy bear' eyes, a chubby muzzle, and short floppy ears. This big guy has a sweet, easygoing personality. Knox (fka Hagrid) was quite the gentleman when HSOV Kennel Tech Kathryn Rea (Kat) gave him extra TLC while he posed for preliminary photos in front of his kennel in the Holding Area (where new intakes are housed). Knox appeared to be ok other dogs in nearby kennels (who were constantly 'talking' to him). Knox just wagged his tail and made a quiet effort to make their acquaintance. Knox weighs 76 lbs and is fairly strong on a leash (merely because of his large size). He was a pushover for 'good boy' treats when we were enticing him to go back in his kennel, and he quickly followed the scent of bacon strips which were waiting for him atop his soft pile of blankets. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Knox was held for three days so that his family would have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership .. But nobody called or came looking for this big boy. Knox went home with a foster family on February 28, 2024 who planned to adopt him after he was neutered .. But Knox did not get along with the foster family's dog, so he came back to HSOV on March 15, 2024 and is available for adoption. These updated photos of Knox were taken on March 25, 2024 when HSOV Lead Canine Kennel Tech Jared Nash accompanied him for more flattering outdoor photos on a bright sunny afternoon. Knox was still very much the gentleman and posed like a 'pro' for his Petfinder/Facebook/Adoptapet. Knox' black coat glistened in the sunlight and also highlighted the beautiful auburn highlights in his coat. Since Knox appears to be dog selective, we recommend a meet-and-greet if you have other dogs in your home. Knox went home with a foster family on December 21, 2024 who planned to adopt him after he was neutered. Knox was returned to HSOV on December 27, 2024 due to an unfortunate incident and was placed on a mandated 10-day bite quarantine. Knox was neutered on January 13, 2025 and was also given rabies vaccine. Update: Knox went home with a foster family over the 2025 Thanksgiving Holiday and he did so well in their home that he ended up spending several weeks with the family instead of the planned long weekend (which speaks volumes about Knox' behavior). They gave Knox a 'perfect report card' which detailed his behavior and which they hope will help Knox find a forever home ... "Knox continues to be the bestest boy but is feeling sad about about having to return to the shelter soon. His break from the shelter is coming to an end, and he has shown his TRUE COLORS while he was on break: 1) Knox is dog friendly! He has met many friends at the dog park and not a single enemy! (Not even the ones that were kinda jerky to him!) 2) Knox loves to play with his dog friends! He actually bounces around with happiness while playing! 3) Knox is mostly house trained with only a couple accidents that might be more human error than Knox error. 4) Knox loves to cuddle! He’s a lover! 5) Knox does great when left alone. (For reasonable amounts of time) 6) He does have energy and needs an opportunity to run/walk/play. He walks quite well on a leash but also loves the freedom of running in a fenced yard or dog park. The best part of him is that he is then gentle and loving and happy to be a couch potato! He’s the perfect mix of energy and lazy! 7) Knox is truly a fantastic dog! He waits patiently and learns quickly! After waiting for nearly 2 years at the shelter, Knox deserves a home of his own where his family can fall in love with this sweet, good boy."
