Story
Update:  Poppy is over a year old and has been here since just a pup and although she loves all us humans from a distance she doesn't care to be touched and if cornered, will nip.  It is very unusual for us to decide to make a dog so young a Joyful sanctuary pet but that is what we've decided to do for Poppy.  She is amazing with all the other dogs, she comes when called and acts just like a normal dog until someone tries to touch her.  The most touch she's welcome has been on her own terms and she will give a quick lick of a hand to the humans here with it on her terms and she will lie against Joye's legs, but still no touchy, touchy.  If by some miracle this girls turns around with time we will alter her description.  Poppy was born about May 15, 2025 and will likely top out about 25 lbs.  This girl came to us as an 8 week old puppy that a breeder couldn't sell because she had a 'bit' of an attitude.  A concerned person knew of this and took Poppy home to try to find a home for her but things weren't going very well with her 'attitude' and this person gave us a call the day before she had an appointment for behavior euthanasia.  Joyful does love a challenge now and then so we were glad to give her a soft place to fall.  We will never understand what happened to this baby to make her so protective around humans when she was so fantastic with all the other dogs.  Could the behavior been caused organically???  It's been several months now and we are just getting her on line because one of us can touch her now.  Yes, just one of us and it is always on her terms.  She can be sleeping next to the person (me) and I can pet her face, her body, legs and fondle her adorable little paws.  She will wake sometimes and look at me as if to say 'if you must' and then falls back asleep.  She adores rough housing with the other dogs and when I reach out and touch her unexpectantly when doing so you'd think had gotten an electric shock as she jumps in the air, glares at me and runs off.  There is a guy here that sits in a lazy boy type chair and she now stands up with her front feet on his legs and stares at him just daring him to reach out, but he doesn't and this is becoming more of a thing and someday....someday....she just may jump in his lap but it will be on her terms as always.  She watches all of us often and is always nearby.  She obviously has feelings for us but they are misguided at times when I'm walking through the house and she jumps up and nips my butt!!!!   Then she started doing this to the other woman who is taller so she can only get her thigh - it hurts and we are saying 'Poppy NO!' but we are not sure she cares.  She has not done this to the man yet, lucky him.     Poppy is a smart little thing and started using the dog door like a pro but that doesn't mean she's house trained and she does often us a potty floor pad.  She's never had a collar or leash on yet as that is going to take a couple people, a couple towels, and some bravery.  Even I still had to 'trap' her to be able to pick her up as we must every few months for her to be shaved down.  Oddly enough this has always gone pretty well and once she's up and on the table she freezes and let's it happen.     Are we really looking for a home for Poppy?  I'm not sure, it would have to be with special humans in a safe environment.  We all do love her and have enjoyed seeing her progress and the love for us that we see in her eyes.  When outside she is the life of the party with everyone else and she has no idea she is so much smaller than many.  She's rough and tumble for sure!  We do love her and she is welcome to stay as long as she needs even if that is forever because that is part of what Joyful Rescues does so well. Story
Maggie was born about March 11, 2019 and weighs about 13 lbs.  Maggie is with us because her elderly mom passed away and her elderly dad had dementia.  Sadly, their son was unable to keep Maggie at this time, but made sure she got to us so we can find her a new and forever home.  She is doing really well with house training upon entering her foster home.  Maggie is wonderful with all the other dogs here, but it is obvious to us that human affection is her real goal in life.  She's fine with cats and kids are ok too, but maybe not the grabby, noisy, really littles.  She loves car rides and is good on leash.  We are told she may wander if not leashed or fenced.  Maggie adores her new foster dad and is the perfect leg warmer!  Her tail is shortened and she has such long legs and a long nose!  She is good about being groomed and came to us quite the mess and seemed very thankful to our volunteer Renee for getting pounds of matts off so she could move freely again.  So, here's Maggie - sweet, not a barker, very cuddly, happy, get along with everyone kind of girl that is here waiting for her new special someone - is that you?
