MORRISTON, ON - Sometimes life takes an unexpected turn, and through no fault of his own, Kenzo found himself needing a new home. His family was facing significant life changes and housing instability, and they were no longer in a position to provide the care he needed. They recognized that he deserved better and reached out to SPIN for help. We said yes. When Kenzo first arrived in foster care, he was an extremely anxious little dog. He barked persistently, and it was difficult for his first foster family to understand what he was trying to communicate or what he needed. He met another foster, but his anxiety continued to be a challenge, and he was described as one of the most anxious dogs his foster had ever encountered. Then he landed with someone who took a different approach. Rather than focusing on the barking, his foster asked a simple question: "What are you trying to tell me, Kenzo?" It wasn't an instant transformation, and there have been challenges along the way. But with patience, gentleness and a willingness to understand his communication, they began to find their way together. Kenzo has made progress. The constant barking that marked his early days is now much less frequent, and his affectionate, playful and cuddly personality has had a chance to shine. He loves his toys, enjoys being close to his person and is happiest when he feels safe and understood. There is, however, more to Kenzo's story than first meets the eye. He has some medical needs, sensitivities around handling, and a documented bite history that prospective families must understand. He needs a very particular kind of home, one that is prepared to respect his boundaries, work within his comfort level and continue helping him build confidence. Meet Butterscotch, a Miniature Poodle who is 4 1/2 years old and weighs only 9lbs. Her fur is a lighter brown in colour, hence the name Butterscotch. She has a small head with bigger floppy ears that make her look so adorably cute. Her chocolate brown eyes are very expressive, looking deep into your soul, asking if you're the one who will be her furever loving family. That's all she wants, someone to love her for the beautiful sweet soul that she is and someone who will spend all the time in the world with her. She will become your best friend, always by your side, enjoying a new life truly being able to just be a dog. Butterscotch is a former mill dog momma who loves any and all attention but is very shy when she first meets new people. She will tentatively take steps toward a new person but in her own time. She is cautious and hesitant but once she allows you to get close she wants you to stay close and never stop petting her or giving her attention. Butterscotch would do well in any kind of dwelling, be it an apartment, condo, semi detached or detached home. She doesn't need much yard space as she likes going for walks more than just being out in the backyard sniffing and exploring. She goes for 3-4 walks per day around 10-15 minutes each walk. When she first came to her foster home she was all over the place when walking on a leash but now she is getting much better at it, often preferring to walk on the left side of her human. She is able to go up and down stairs, although there are some steps she will not go down like the front porch steps but she will happily go up them after her walk. She goes through doorways easily and she has discovered how to jump up on the couch recently which she has claimed as her favourite spot in the whole house. She loves to be held but likes to hold herself sitting straight up in your arms. She loves to snuggle beside her foster mom when she is sitting or laying on the couch. She is a “velcro” dog, always wanting to be wherever her human is. She loves being around people but she also needs her space with peace and quiet. Loud noises don't seem to bother her, she isn't startled easily. Butterscotch is a quiet, gentle, laid back tiny girl. If she isn't following you around the house physically with her little pitter patter of paws she is with her eyes as she lays on the couch enjoying the soft landing there. She loves nothing better than to spend the afternoon curled up in a little ball on it. She will need to be groomed regularly, every 6-8 weeks for a hair cut along with brushing her coat regularly as it tends to get matted easily. Her groomer fell in love with Butterscotch and commented on what a sweet and good girl she was, being very cooperative, calm and quiet the whole time. She hasn't developed any signals yet to let me know when she needs to go outside to do her business. She has had a few accidents in the house and in her crate. Her new family would want to have a routine where she gets outside 3-4 times per day. She can hold her it for 8-10 hours overnight and about 6 hours during the day but a routine of regular walks would be best for her. She sleeps 8-10 hours in the crate at night, she won't go in on her own willingly but once in it she's good for the night. She becomes vocal when she has to go in the crate during the day. These are the only times her foster mom hears her make any noise. She isn't fond of the crate so someone who is home more during the day would make her happy. She eats in the kitchen where her foster feline brothers eat, that seems to be her happy place to eat and drink. She is currently being fed 3x per day with treats in between. She can be a little picky about her food some days, even her treats. She will take treats out of my hand sometimes and other times she prefers to eat them out of her bowl. She's a female, she's allowed to change her mind! :) She loves going for car rides and does well in the crate when in the car. Not a peep out of her. She's happiest whenever she can be with her human so she gets taken to family outings and dinners and loves all the attention she gets. Butterscotch has 2 feline brothers in her foster home. She is indifferent to them and just ignores their antics. They in turn ignore her so it's a win-win situation. But she loves to meet all the dogs in the neighbourhood when out walking. Once she says hello to them then she's had enough socializing and wants to continue on her merry way. She isn't interested in playing with them, just a meet and greet and that's enough of that. She really does just love being with her human only. She hasn't shown any interest in other wildlife, namely squirrels and rabbits in the hood, either. Because of Butterscotch's small size and her timid nature, small children would not be ideal for her, plus she seems to thrive in a calm and quiet environment. A family with teenage children or older would be better or an older couple or single adult. She just needs that one person to be her soulmate. She will not do well in a busy city environment, she needs a quiet outside environment as well, so a rural area, small town, or quiet subdivision. Butterscotch hasn't had any formal obedience training which is understandable given where she came from. Her foster mother has been working with her to learn the commands of “stay”, “sit”, “come” but it is a very slow process. She seems eager to please but she would benefit from having formal obedience training once she is in her forever home. Butterscotch has been spayed and is up to date on all vaccinations. She recently had several dental extractions and is recovering well from both surgeries. Because of her teeth being in such poor condition she will need to have regular yearly cleanings. She is being treated for an ear infection presently and she takes her medications well. Her forever family also needs to be aware that she has hind claws bilaterally that are small and tight to the leg. No treatment is necessary but they need to be aware so the nails can get trimmed. Both times at the vet she was quiet and cooperative, a very good girl for them Butterscotch is such a sweetheart with a little body and a big heart. She is happiest when her human is nearby, so she can get all the attention, belly rubs and ear scratches. She loves going for walks and is a joy to have around. Oz is a 5-1/2-year-old miniature poodle weighing around 12lbs. He has a soft cream coat and the most beautiful brown eyes. He has a fluffy, full tail that is just starting to wag as he begins to settle in this big new world. Now I know some of you are already filling out your application for Oz but please read this bio first as we are looking for a very special family. Our sweet boy was discarded from a large-scale breeding organization after over five years, and he has been slow to adapt to the world outside that facility. Five years without love or socialization have put some hurdles up for Oz but good luck found Oz when Pound Dog Rescue decided to pull him into their care and give him a chance. Now he needs one more dose of good luck to help him find the family who can support him through the rest of his life. If you cannot handle a dog that is afraid of you to start and does not want to be touched, then Oz will not be a good match for you. I know when we find his family that they will get to see him transform over the next few years but please be honest about what you can handle and what you are looking for. Oz is safe and adored in his foster home and we will take as long as we need to find the right forever home for him. Oz has taken many huge steps during his time in foster care, but he still has a journey ahead of him. He is looking for a family with experience dealing with timid dogs, shut down dogs and/or dogs retired from large scale breeding operations. He needs a home that is quiet and patient where he can be given the time and space he needs to get comfortable. Oz’s family needs to have experience balancing this space with encouragement forward. We don’t want him to become stagnant, so he needs to be shown the way forward on a daily basis. It is easy to want to coddle and protect him, but this will not help him adapt or evolve. Outside of these needs, Oz is a sweet and easy dog to have around. In the home he is crate trained and he feels safe there. He is crated whenever I am not home or if I am unable to pay attention to him. He eats in his crate and sleeps overnight without a peep. When I’m home and it’s time to relax around the house, he runs right to the couch. He snuggles up to his foster siblings and even allows for a tiny bit of affection from me. He lives with several other dogs right now and gets along with everyone, finding a bit of comfort in their presence. We would love to place him with a family who has a well-balanced dog of similar size and energy so he has a positive role model, but this is not mandatory. I also think he would be fine with cats as he has shown little to no prey drive, although he is untested here. Oz has learned the routine of our home and he seems to find comfort in the schedule. He will come to the kitchen with the other dogs to see about dinner, and he will gather with the other dogs when it’s time to receive some treats, although he has not yet found the courage to take a treat from my hand. Oz's favourite thing is his walks and he is a wonderful walking companion. He trots along beside me, looking up for approval. His confidence is more pronounced out on a walk and he will even venture out front at times, tail held high. He’s happy to walk wherever I lead, for as long as I lead and pays little attention to anything else. He is not bothered by other dogs passing or loud streets although he would prefer to NOT have a stranger get too close or pass behind him. At the best of times Oz remains a flight risk so he wears a martingale collar at all times and his new family must be ready to adhere to this same rule. One of my favourite things about Oz are his little grumbles that he lets out when he is happy or excited. He knows the routine of the house so well that he knows I will take him for his walk first. When he sees me coming, he starts grumbling and doesn’t stop until I have his leash on him. His tail has even started wagging! Other than those grumbles he has been a quiet dog, only barking a few times when trying to back up his foster brother! Oz can also do the full flight of stairs up and down now (with encouragement) so he would be fine in almost any home. A yard is not mandatory as long as there is an appropriate place for him to do his business. Oz is completely house trained at this point although he does not know how to signal he has to go out. He has the benefit of living with a senior foster dog who dictates the bathroom schedule around here so there are always ample opportunities to relieve himself outside. In his new home he will need to be given ample opportunity to go outside to reinforce this house training. He tolerates a bit of affection from me in the home but Oz is not a dog who seeks out affection at this point. If I touch him without him seeing me coming he will flinch and even run. When it comes to other things in life, Oz handles them as we would expect from a terrified dog. He is cooperative at the vet and the groomer because he is scared and shuts down so he needs a family who will understand this and advocate for him in these areas. He has a coat that requires regular grooming so his new family must be ready to commit to an appropriate grooming schedule. He is starting to get used to the car but still finds it scary so he needs to be secured in either a seat with a leash or a crate for everyone’s safety. Oz has a healthy dose of ‘stranger danger’ so care must be taken when unknown people are around to give him a chance to adapt. Again, we don’t want to keep him away from everything new, but we do want to be respectful of his fear so he can learn to handle new experiences with confidence. And that’s really what it comes down to – confidence. Oz needs a family committed to helping him find his. He will do best in an adult only home as the action and noise of children will be too much for this sensitive boy. A home with teenage children would be considered. Oz came into rescue with a hematoma on his ear and lots of yeasty buildup. Both were treated and his ears have been thoroughly cleaned multiple times. He was neutered without incident and also received a dental cleaning to remove some tartar buildup. He is microchipped, tested negative for heartworm and is up to date on his required vaccinations. The growth I have seen in Oz in the time he has been with me makes me incredibly proud and I can’t wait to see how far he goes. The right family for Oz has experience dealing with frightened dogs and understands the need to support him while encouraging him through the scary things. They have a quiet, adult only home that is full of love and patience for this sweet boy. His family needs to be committed to investing in his future even if it takes time to see the results. At the same time his new family needs to love and accept him for the dog that he is today. He is a sweet, sensitive boy who deserves this next chapter of his life to be full of patience, love and support.
