Story
Joey is a sweet, one-year-old Bichon/Schnauzer mix who has stolen the hearts of his foster family. He is an affectionate little guy who loves nothing more than curling up in your lap and being close to his people.
Joey is still working on confidence and socialization, and new environments can feel overwhelming. Joey will need an experienced and patient home that understands that confidence takes time to build. He is cautious when meeting new people and expresses that through barking. Joey quickly begins to show his loving personality after proper introductions. He tends to be more cautious around men, but he has made great progress with his foster dad and is learning that new people can be trusted. Joey has had limited exposure to children. When he has encountered children, he has been unsure and has responded by barking just like he does to everyone else. Joey would do well in a home with older (12+) dog savvy children that can calmly introduce themselves.
Once Joey is comfortable, he is a lovely little companion. He is housetrained, LOVES car rides, enjoys relaxing in the house and backyard, and has learned to settle nicely in his crate overnight. He gets along with the three resident cats and enjoys watching the world from the yard, including the occasional squirrel or rabbit chase. Although Joey previously lived successfully with another male dog, he has shown reactivity towards other dogs while in his foster home, particularly on walks and in social situations. Joey requires a patient home that is committed to investing time in professional training and positive socialization to help him build confidence and learn appropriate behaviours around other dogs and people.
Joey is carrying a little extra weight, and his foster family is helping him work toward a healthier weight through appropriate food and exercise. Joey currently weighs 9.9kg but his ideal weight would be 7.5kg. His forever family should continue this routine so he can feel his best and enjoy an active, healthy life.
Joey would do best with an understanding adopter who is willing to let him build trust at his own pace, rather than expecting him to be an instant social butterfly. For the right person, watching Joey go from uncertain to trusting will be incredibly rewarding, and underneath his cautious exterior is a little dog who simply wants to feel loved, and understood. Joey loves to be around his people and prefers a family that is home often. He is crate trained, but often struggles to settle in his crate while his people are away. He is currently working on this in his foster home and will need an adopter that is willing to invest time into helping Joey overcome his separation anxiety while home alone. Joey is not suitable for apartment living due to barking.
Joey is an active little guy who will love spending time with his new family. Loyal, sweet, and affectionate, Joey has all the makings of a wonderful best friend. Like all of us, he has a few things to work on, but we know this little guy just needs someone who believes in him and is willing to invest the time, patience, and resources needed to help him grow. With the right person by his side, we're confident Joey will continue to blossom into the wonderful companion he's meant to be.
Our adoption fees cover all up to date veterinary needs, including but not limited to: full veterinary examination, age appropriate vaccinations, fecal test and parasite prevention, wellness bloodwork, spay or neuter, and microchip. All dogs will be started on a 6 week trial of pet insurance after adoption.
