Story
Buttermilk knows exactly what she likes, what she doesn't like, and would appreciate it if everyone could please just respect that and give her a minute. She's curious and sweet, but a touch cautious. She takes things at her own pace, prefers to be inside, and has strong opinions about her potty situation (she needs to smell another dog's scent on the ground first, requires a car-free environment, and prefers not to have an audience). All very reasonable preferences if you think about it. She's working on warming up to being touched, though she will lean into a chin scratch and lick your hand while she thinks about whether she's fully on board. She also likes small spaces and will often return to her pen when given free rein.A sweet little hermit, she is. Buttermilk would do best with an experienced, patient dog owner who understands that she needs to come to you rather than the other way around. A yard would be especially wonderful, and someone who appreciates a dog that is quietly, carefully, on her own timeline becoming exactly who she's going to be. She's not there yet. But she's getting there, and she needs someone who can see the beauty in that. -----

A Quick but Important Note to All Adopters:
Please remember that none of our dogs arrive fully trained. Most come from tough or uncertain beginnings and may have never lived in a home or known basic routines. That means:

✧ They are not potty trained on arrival. Most dogs regress in potty training when moving to a new environment.

✧ They may lack basic manners (like leash walking or appropriate chewing).

✧ They’re learning, growing, and doing their best—but they will need patience, structure, and compassion to succeed.

The majority of these pups have lived in the confinement of a cage or kennel run for most - if not all - of their lives. Because of this, we strongly discourage the use of crates for anything other than vehicle transport. They deserve the chance to decompress and learn what true freedom and comfort feel like.

Our amazing foster homes work hard to start these dogs on the right path, but they are rescues, not finished products. These dogs need time, consistency, and a loving home willing to meet them where they are.

Also, breed designations are our best guesses based on appearance and behavior. We can't guarantee breed, size, adult weight, or coat type.

Story
Thousand Island is a happy, friendly, enthusiastic boy who loves walks, being held, being where the action is…pretty much all of it. He has a marking instinct so committed that he wears a belly band indoors and considers it merely a minor inconvenience on the path to doing what he was born to do. He is friendly to literally everyone he has met so far, is eager and curious every single morning, walks beautifully on leash, and has become quite bonded to his foster dad. He wants to be wherever you are, doing whatever you're doing. The marking thing is real and worth going in prepared for, so just note: belly band inside, consistent schedule, patience. He always goes outside and the outdoor situation is great; it's just the indoor instinct that needs management, but IS very manageable. He's food motivated and responds to his humans eagerly, so with the right routine, he's very trainable. If you want a loyal, friendly, always-enthusiastic companion who will be thrilled about waking up every single day, Thousand Island is ready to be your guy. -----
