Story
# Ace Hi, I'm Ace! 🐾 I'm a 7-month-old Papillon mix with a striking white coat dotted with black speckles — small enough to snuggle but full of puppy potential. I'm a gentle and smart boy who's still a bit shy, so I'll need patient adopters who understand I'm still growing into my big personality. At just under 11 pounds, I'm the perfect lap-sized companion for someone ready to invest in my training and socialization. My adoption fee is $500, and I promise to repay your kindness with loyalty as I mature. 💕 Come meet me and let's start our adventure together!

Story
Murphy came to us from a local animal control due to the sudden and terrible passing of his dad. He was so upset he was lashing out at everyone. He was a scared little guy. He wants everyone to think he is a big mean dog...when in all actuality he is a sweet loveable little guy with a huge need for attention. He is best being an only dog, but has been ok with several others here as long as they have enough room to give each other space. He doesn't mind cats. He will need someone that understands small dog scare tactics :) He was adopted several years ago and returned due to his adopter being unable to care for him any longer. He is now a toothless semi senior guy looking for his perfect retirement home. ##623222##

Opie Papillon Terrier mix Male, 9lbs DOB 09/26/2024 Neutered/ Microchipped UTD on required vaccines Current on heartworm & flea prevention Please read the bio in its ENTIRETY. If you feel your family is a perfect match, please send an email to gateway4paws@gmail.com for additional information. Only complete & qualified applications will be considered/contacted. We do not allow shipping & do not transport. You must live within 350 miles from Maryville, IL & able to drive to that area for a meet and greet. We are a 100% foster-based rescue. Applications & FAQ about our adoption process can be found on our website. Opie came to rescue after he was surrendered to a local animal shelter. The shelter knew the best thing for him was to get him into a foster-based rescue to benefit his emotional health. Little dogs like Opie can deteriorate quickly in a shelter-type setting. This was definitely the best decision for Opie, and we are so thankful to the shelter for reaching out. Opie's foster mom sent us a very detailed report on the Big Personality that occupies his tiny 9-pound body! "If Opie wants to get to something he will eventually figure out how to get there. ⁃ Table surfer, a new trick he’s started in the last week. He wants what everyone else has, human or dog. Needs to be fed separately or he will eat their food. Do not leave food on a counter or ground unless you intend for him to eat it! ⁃ Escape artist, no dog gate has been able to beat him if his people are on the other side. ⁃ Needs a secure fence for sure, likes to “test” the gates and under fence areas every time he’s outside. We have rabbit fencing below our privacy fence which prevents him from going under, but need to stay vigilant with him outside. Never EVER leave him unattended outside. ⁃ Wants to be right by his people all the time. I think he would not do well left for long stretches of time, especially if he was the only dog. He becomes anxious pretty quickly and will probably start becoming destructive. He hasn’t been left alone much while he is with us other than his kennel at bedtime. When he is separated from people he is usually trying to beat the baby gate, using furniture and also literally scaling the baby gate. He could benefit with having other dogs in the house who wish to interact with him, my old man dog doesn’t “play” and Opie could do well with a playful pet friend. ⁃ 99% potty trained, still marking prior to neuter surgery. No marking or accidents in the house so far after surgery. He does not like to go in his house or kennel and will let you know when he needs to go outside. Keeps his area clean. ⁃ Plays “fetch and destroy” with his squeaky stuffed animal platypus but does not go for the rope toy despite my 10yo-old's best efforts. (probably for the best considering rope toys are a bowel obstruction danger!) ⁃ I think the oversized pet pouch hoodies were created for pups like Opie, who are most content being swaddled and carried around by their people. He loves to be held like a baby over the shoulder so he can see what’s going on and snugglein. ⁃ he will “sing” softly with you if you whistle with him ⁃ He barks when people come in to alert you but stops shortly and doesn’t bark much otherwise. " Opie is walking on a leash and continues to get better at it. He wears a very safe & secure harness when walking. 🏡 What Opie Needs in His Forever Home: 🐾 A family that will extend the time needed for Opie to get used to a new home. 3-3-3 Rule. 🐾 Opportunities for continued training. 🐾 Opie does well with other dogs and enjoys their company. We will pursue a home where he has a constant comanion. 🐾 A family willing to invite Opie to all the activities & include him. He will not do well being excluded. 🐶 If you are ready for a fun & attentive family member, you may be a good fit for Opie! Please follow the instructions listed to apply for adoption.

Story
☕🐾 MEET STARBUCKS! 🐾☕ Location: Troy MO Adoption Fee: $400 Starbucks is a beautiful 2-year, 9-month-old female Papillon weighing just 9 pounds. This little lady has a gorgeous tri-colored coat, those signature flowing Papillon ears, and a voice she isn’t afraid to use! Papillons are natural alert barkers, and Starbucks will let you know when she thinks something deserves your attention. With gentle correction, reassurance, and time to adjust to her surroundings, she is learning that everything is okay and becoming more relaxed in her foster home. 💖 A Sweet Girl Finding Her Confidence When Starbucks first entered rescue, she quickly bonded with her foster mom and wanted her all to herself. She initially struggled with other dogs approaching her favorite person, so her foster mom has been gently working with her to discourage resource guarding while helping her feel safe and secure. Each day, Starbucks is making progress and becoming more comfortable with her foster family and canine companions. Patience, consistency, and positive guidance will be important as she continues to grow. One of the most heartwarming changes has been watching Starbucks discover the joy of being a playful pup! 🧸 She loves toys, enjoys playing with the puppies, and can often be found proudly carrying or tossing her favorite toys around. When playtime is over, she may snuggle up with her treasured toys for a cozy nap. She is also becoming quite the little sweetheart, enjoying her foster mom’s pillow and beginning to share kisses. ❤️ 🏡 What Starbucks Needs in Her Forever Home Starbucks is looking for a patient, understanding home that will give her the time she needs to settle in and build trust. She especially loves women and is still learning to feel comfortable around men. Her adopter should understand resource guarding and be prepared to use positive, consistent training to help her learn to share attention and feel secure around other dogs. She will also need gentle guidance with her alert barking as she learns which sights and sounds require attention and which ones are nothing to worry about. Starbucks is a smart girl with so much potential. With love, patience, and the right support, she can continue blossoming into the confident, playful companion she is becoming every day. 💕 🩺 Her Health & Care Starbucks is fully vetted, spayed, microchipped, and current on vaccinations. She has had a dental cleaning to remove tartar buildup and did not require any teeth to be extracted. Her veterinarian did not believe she had any litters before her spay. She is heartworm negative and has started monthly Sentinel heartworm prevention, which should be continued. 🍽️ Mealtime Favorites Starbucks enjoys Fromm Gold Small Breed Adult food with freeze-dried raw toppers. She is also exploring fresh fruits and vegetables and loves crunchy treats like Charlee Bears and Fromm Crunchios. She is beginning to enjoy Fruitables, too! She eats twice daily and is working on staying focused and finishing her meals in her designated eating spot. Starbucks may be tiny, but she has a big personality and an even bigger capacity to blossom with the right person by her side. Could you be the one to help this sweet Papillon continue her journey toward confidence and trust? 🐾❤️ 📍 Starbucks is located in Troy, Missouri. Applicants must be willing to travel to Troy. We do not transport or ship dogs. If flying, Starbucks must travel in the airplane cabin; he will not be permitted to travel in cargo. Leia’s Hope Canine Rescue is a foster-based, volunteer-run rescue. An approved application is required before meet-and-greets, and applications are reviewed to find the best fit for each individual dog. Please allow 7–10 business days for application processing. A young dog is a commitment that may last 12 years or longer, so applicants should carefully consider the time, expense, training and lifestyle changes involved in raising a young dog. 🐾 Additional adoption information and applications can be found at leiashope.org. 🐾
