Story
...Niko was found on 11/20/2025 at Washington Elementary in Kennewick wearing a bright red collar, like he belonged to someone. But no one ever came for him—and since then, he’s been waiting. At just over a year old, Niko is a 74-pound burst of energy, personality, and chaos in the best way. He’s the kind of dog that hits the yard and immediately takes off—zoomies first, questions later—racing back and forth like the world is his playground. And honestly? Watching him is impossible not to smile at.He’s incredibly food motivated and already knows “sit” and “lay down,” and while he walks pretty well on a leash, he’s strong and still very much a puppy in a big body. He’s a little stubborn, a little wild, and a whole lot of fun. The kind of dog that will absolutely keep you on your toes—but will also make you laugh every single day.And then there’s his look—Niko is stunning. A houndsome mixed breed with piercing brown eyes and a coat that gives him this wild, coyote-like appearance. He looks like he should be intimidating… but he’s not. Not even close. He’s playful, curious, and full of life. He just needs someone who sees that energy for what it is—potential. Someone who will let him run, let him learn, and help him grow into the incredible dog he’s meant to be.We won’t sugarcoat it—Niko can be a bit mouthy and jumpy, and he will need continued training. But these are the kinds of things that come with young, high-energy dogs, and with consistency and effort, he’s going to thrive. He wants to engage, he wants to learn—he just needs someone willing to meet him there. His history with other dogs or cats is unknown.Niko’s adoption fee is $50. He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on age-appropriate vaccines, and treated for fleas, ticks, and worms. Our shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Holds, deposits, and pre-adoptions are not allowed. Animals may transfer to other shelters or rescues at any time. For questions or to check his availability, stop by the front desk, give us a call, or send us an email!

Story
...Vayla may look familiar to some of our longtime supporters. Formerly known as Viva, she was previously adopted from TCAS and recently returned to our care after her most recent home was no longer available.Vayla was spayed during her previous stay at the shelter and is ready to go home right now!Vayla currently weighs about 55 pounds and has settled back into shelter life with the same sweet personality that helped her find a home the first time around. Her previous family shared that she is potty trained, great with kids, knows commands, is very obedient, and does well with other dogs. While we have not been able to independently verify those claims during her current stay, we wanted to pass along the information they shared with us.What we can tell you is that Vayla is a friendly, lovable dog who enjoys spending time with people and has already won over plenty of staff and volunteers. She has the kind of face that makes you stop and say hello, and the kind of personality that makes you want to stay awhile. For us, Vayla`s history with other dogs or cats is unknown. Meet and greets are required with any dogs currently living in the home prior to adoption.Vayla`s adoption fee is $50. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on age-appropriate vaccines, and treated for fleas, ticks, and worms. Our shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Holds, deposits, and pre-adoptions are not allowed. Animals may transfer to other shelters or rescues at any time.Vayla has already had a home once before. We`d love to see her find her next one soon. Come meet her today!

Story
...River was found on Road 36 and West Wernett Road in Pasco after Animal Control received a call about a large dog who was struggling to get up and down. He was picked up and brought to our facility, where he has remained since—and unfortunately, he has seen very little adoption interest. River is now our largest resident at 106 pounds.River is listed as a Shepherd mix, though his exact breed is a mystery. What we do know is that he is one of those dogs who forms strong opinions about his people—if he likes you, he likes you, and if he doesn’t… he absolutely remembers it.River is also likely another example of “black dog syndrome,” a well-documented phenomenon where black-coated dogs are often overlooked in shelters. Whether it’s due to visibility in kennels, photos that don’t fully capture their expression, or unconscious bias, these dogs tend to wait longer than others despite being just as loving, loyal, and deserving. Unfortunately, River has been one of those dogs who keeps getting passed by.To his core, though, River is a giant-hearted, typical big-breed dog. He walks well on a leash, knows how to sit and shake, and has a deep, distinctive voice—you will absolutely know when River is talking. There’s something very soulful about him, like he’s lived a whole life before arriving here, and we can’t help but wonder about the people he once belonged to.He clearly loved someone once, and someone clearly loved him. Most days, when his favorite staff stop by his kennel, he simply lifts his head from his bed and looks at them with the softest expression, like he’s quietly hoping this time might be the day he goes home. It’s hard not to wonder if he thinks this might just be forever for him.His history with other dogs or cats is unknown. However, we have seen him show interest in other dogs from a distance, so he may enjoy canine companionship with proper introductions and meet-and-greets to ensure compatibility.River’s adoption fee is $50. For questions about River or to check his availability, stop by the front desk, give us a call, or send us an email!
