I’ve been called a “little spitfire of energy,” and honestly… they’re not wrong! I love being outside, running, playing, and soaking up every bit of adventure I can find.I’d make the perfect running partner or sidekick for someone who loves to stay active and explore. I’m curious, fun, and always ready to see what’s next!So what do you say… want to be explorers together? ????

Story
Meet Rico! This 28-pound bundle of fun is equal parts playful and sweet, with a personality that will keep you smiling. Rico is a pretty laid-back guy overall, but he’s still working on his manners and will benefit from a little continued guidance and consistency. He enjoys spending time with his people, whether it’s going for a walk or just hanging out. Rico walks nicely on a leash, is crate trained, and gets along well with other dogs, making him a great addition to many types of homes. Rico has an adorable, lean build and the cutest black-and-white ticking on his feet that adds to his unique charm. And let’s talk about those ears—his little ears have a mind of their own! Some days they’re up, some days they’re down…you never quite know what kind of ear day he’s having, but it just makes him even more lovable. Rico is currently looking for a foster or forever home where he can continue to shine and be part of a loving family. If you’re looking for a fun, affectionate companion with a touch of quirky charm, Rico might just be your perfect match.

Story
Meet Callie Beautiful, sweet, playful, and affectionate Callie. We rescued her from a high kill animal control. She was a young pup at the time and we thought for sure she’d be adopted given her sunny looks and bubbly personality. Sadly, she’s been overlooked again and again. Callie is nearly seven years old now. Her whole life has been spent behind bars and for absolutely nothing she did, except be born and abandoned. We love this girl beyond measure. She has been nothing but amazing since arriving those many years ago. The shelter confinement has taken its toll on her psyche though. She is still outgoing for those she knows. She loves her people, and has fun in the yard, but Callie is afraid of the outside world. She’s afraid of getting in a car. Perhaps because the last time that happened, her entire life changed. That said, we believe that once in a loving, stable and quiet home with a fenced yard and a bit of time to get used to her ‘freedom,’ Callie is going to be the most loyal and loving companion. She’s become a little shy with new people. Not aggressive, but reticent to get involved, knowing she most likely won’t see them again. After more than four years of not meeting a lot of new people, this is not unexpected. BUT, for those she loves and trusts, her bond is strong, and her attention fills up your whole heart. We’ve seen many of our longer-term residents, once under the gentle guidance and love of their family, blossom into confident dogs that learn to love car rides, go for walks, meet new people and even get to know other dogs, under supervision of course. We think Callie is mostly housetrained. She'll use her kennel when the nights are long and she can't get out, but during the day, she never uses her kennel to potty. We think it's just a matter of letting her go out more often. Despite her reluctance to embrace the unknown, Callie is a hoot and keeps us laughing with her antics, her happy tail wag and laughing smile. She is incredibly friendly when feeling safe. She LOVES being with her people. She loves having her ears and belly scratched. She loves to run and romp in the yard. She can be a strong leash walker, but knowing that prevents surprises. Callie is affectionate and welcomes attention, a lot of it! Callie is a shelter favorite. She doesn’t tend to like other dogs (maybe it’s fear of the unknown) and chases cats. We think Callie will do best as an only pet. She is a fantastic girl with so much love and companionship to offer her family or person. Once the walls that Callie’s built up to protect herself come down, she’s all in. She is definitely a keeper for the person or family willing to give her a chance. Might that be you? If interested in Callie, please submit a dog application online at www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org Please email us at smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net to let us know to be on the lookout. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out of state adoptions. Story
Meet Mae Mae is a beautiful three-year old pointer/Australian cattle dog mix. She was owner surrendered to a high kill shelter. We pulled her from that shelter and brought her to our no kill shelter. She is just a baby and deserves to find a second chance at a happy life. Mae is a petite beauty at 32 lbs. She has pretty black and white markings and intelligent eyes. Mae is calm and quiet. She can be a little shy at first but will quickly warm up when she knows you mean no harm. She LOVES being with people and wants to be with you all the time. Mae is not high energy. She is very well-socialized. She likes people, does great with kids, and does well with other dogs her size or bigger. She does not like small dogs or cats. Mae walks well on a leash. Mae has lived her life indoors. It’s hard to say if she is housetrained because she is scared in the kennel environment. However, she’s lived her life as an indoor dog, once in a home she may quickly pick up what is expected from her with some gentle guidance and consistency. Mae is smart and knows some commands. A fenced yard will be a must to let her be outside safely. Mae will be a terrific companion, ride along dog, and faithful friend to keep you company. She’ll be a hit at family picnics or simply make you feel loved on those quieter days. She is a delightful little dog. If interested in welcoming Mae to your family, please submit an application online at: www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org. Please use the downloadable application found on our homepage. Please email our shelter (smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net) to make sure we received your application.
