Meet Duke – A Loyal German Shepherd Looking for His Person!
When Duke first arrived at Wilton Animal Rescue, we weren't quite sure what to make of him. He was sweet but nervous, and his tendency to escape led us to believe he might need a lot of time and patience to adjust to life in a home. Boy, did Duke prove us wrong!
Once we brought Duke inside, we discovered a completely different dog. Beneath that nervous exterior was an incredibly loving, loyal, and well-mannered companion who simply wants to be close to his person.
Duke is truly a house dog at heart! He's fully house-trained, has excellent indoor manners, and is wonderfully laid-back in the home. He's perfectly content to lounge around with his favorite person and would love nothing more than to curl up at the foot of your bed each night. Once Duke decides you're his person, you've got a devoted companion who wants to be wherever you are.
And here's another wonderful thing we've learned about Duke: He loves kids! During his time with Wilton Animal Rescue, Duke has had opportunities to spend time around children, and he genuinely enjoyed their company. It's been heartwarming to see this big, handsome shepherd show his affectionate side around kids.
Although Duke is crate and kennel trained, he's made it pretty clear that he'd rather not spend his time in one. In fact, his reputation as an "escape artist" came from his ability to jump right out of kennels without roofs! The funny thing is, when he's allowed to relax inside the house, he doesn't feel the need to go anywhere. He's perfectly happy being left loose indoors while his person is away and doesn't cause any trouble.
And did we mention how handsome he is? Duke is an absolutely gorgeous German Shepherd, and even the groomers adore him!
A Few Things to Know About Duke:
Duke has a sensitive side, and we suspect his past wasn't always kind to him. Loud noises and chaotic environments can make him nervous, so he would thrive in a quieter, more predictable home. He's also head-shy around unfamiliar people, particularly when someone reaches toward his face. We suspect he may have been struck in the past, so gentle introductions and allowing him to build trust at his own pace are important.
When it comes to other dogs, Duke is timid rather than aggressive. He can be unsure of himself around unfamiliar dogs and needs a little time to feel comfortable. For a family with other dogs, slow, patient introductions in a calm, controlled environment will be important. With the right approach and an understanding family, Duke may be able to settle into a multi-dog household.
While Duke has shown that he really enjoys being around children, a calmer household where kids understand how to give a dog space and respect his boundaries would be ideal.
But once Duke feels safe and knows he can trust you, his affectionate and devoted personality really shines.
Duke doesn't need a kennel in the backyard. He needs a home, a comfortable place to rest, and someone to love.
