Story
Courage came into rescue in January as part of a hoarding case. Just 9 months old, he was terrified, unsocialized, and overwhelmed by change. He had never known that people could be kind. For five months, his foster family has patiently helped him gain confidence, and while he's made meaningful progress, Courage still needs an adopter with deep patience and realistic expectations. Now 1 year-old and 7 lbs., Courage has learned to trust his foster family and a few familiar people. However, he does not permit being picked up, isn't a fan of leash walking, and prefers to be pet by specific trusted humans. He thrives on routine—any disruption causes anxiety. With a predictable environment, he's a funny and happy little guy.   Courage is house trained as long as he's let out regularly. He's clean in his crate, which serves as his safe space, and he follows the command to go in. He also eats his meals there. The rewards for taking on a dog like Courage are huge.   Courage's foster family has continued to work with him but he still does not care for being leashed or picked up. He may never be a cuddly dog, but when he wants you to pay attention to him he is wiggly and funny. One of his favorite past times is stretching out on the sidewalk to bake in the sun. When you finally earn his trust, it will fill your heart with joy. He enjoys other dogs he knows and would likely do well with a cat. Due to his semi-feral tendencies and insecurities, Courage needs a quiet home without kids or lots of visitors. His adopter must be prepared for setbacks, including hiding or fearful behavior. Story
    Meet Tootsie, a happy-go-lucky 8 year-old rattie-jack mix. Tootsie came to foster when her person passed away and she was left alone with her pack just before the winter weather. Since previously being left alone, she's been very attached to foster mom, but she's settled into foster digs (and anything fleece) pretty quickly. She is a sweet and obedient girl who loves to snuggle and cuddle, and as the weather has warmed up, is showing a bit of playful side! She dances enthusiastically when we get ready to go out, and is curious about exploring the neighborhood, but it's clear she wasn't used to being far from home base in her previous life. She's house-trained on a schedule and although she walks just fine on leash, she doesn't seem to be used to potty on leash, so she would prefer a fenced yard. She was very affectionate with her rescued sibling before he went to another foster, and she gets along nicely with her foster bro, inviting him to play. She warns foster mom if someone is coming up the walk but otherwise she's quiet.   Tootsie is extremely loving and gentle and will plop her 20 lbs. on your lap or next to you on the couch the minute you sit down. She needs someone who will give her lots of attention, and who is willing to be there for her while she finds her way in this next chapter away from the people and the pack she was part of for so long, but she will adapt very quickly to her new life. Looking for a medium-sized gentleman with a heart of gold and a serious snuggle game? Hooper is your guy! Hooper is a 24 lb., 8-year-old male rat terrier mix with a wonderful personality and sweet temperament. He can be a little shy at first, but once he feels comfortable with his people, he absolutely blossoms. Hooper loves giving kisses and soaking up attention from those he trusts. He gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home and doesn't seem to pay much attention to the cats. Hooper does well with the older children in his foster home; however, we would not recommend a home with small children, as loud noises and sudden excitement can make him nervous. He would thrive with older kids who can give him the gentle attention he craves. Hooper is a true snuggle bug. He's happy to curl up for a nap on the sofa or in his bed, but his favorite place to sleep is right beside his people. At bedtime, he'll happily give you goodnight kisses before snuggling in for the night. He is a loyal little companion who truly wants to be close to his family. Hooper has a healthy appetite and may eat quickly, but he doesn't guard or overeat. He is leash trained, reliably potty-trained (with only the occasional minor accident), and crate trained—especially if there's a treat involved! If you're looking for a devoted, affectionate companion to share your couch and your heart, Hooper may be your perfect match. We will never know Raya’s past, but she came to us from the shelter as a stray with urine stains on her fur and recently healed scars on her head and side. Raya is believed to be around 4 years-old and is probably a mix of rat terrier and chihuahua, now at a good weight of 9.5 lbs.! She had her spay and a small benign mass removed from her left armpit shortly after arriving, and saw specialists to address extreme pain during bowel movements. Finally, in November 2025, she had double knee surgery to correct her painful injuries. Although Raya has healed well she will probably remain a little lame on her right rear leg but that doesn’t stop her at all! She is back to going up and down stairs, can now get up on the sofa by herself, and is even dancing for her breakfast! Although she has mostly done well with the other resident dogs, she has displayed signs of resource-guarding with her crate. These behaviors might be related to the physical scars she has and her experience with other dogs prior to the shelter, so she would do best in a home with no children or dogs. Although she can be a bit barky at people and dogs when out walking, she is very treat-motivated and can easily be redirected. When introduced to the resident cat, Raya did not seem interested. Even though Raya does not ask to go out, she is reliably house-trained on a schedule. Raya is cute as a button, recovered from knee surgery, and is ready to start looking for her forever home. Considering Raya’s past, she would do best in a home where she would get all the attention and not have to share her human(s). Story
Sherman (aka Shermie or Sherm) is a handsome little rat terrier mix with a heart full of love. Rescued from a busy shelter where he was too nervous to shine, he's now thriving in foster care in Northern Virginia and showing his true, gentle spirit. About 2–3 years-old and 15 lbs., Sherman is sweet, sensitive, and playful. He may need a little time to warm up to new people, but once he trusts you, he becomes a deeply loyal companion who loves being by your side. He enjoys other small dogs and has a submissive, easygoing play style. Sherman would do well with a confident canine buddy — or as an only pup soaking up all the attention. He'd really thrive in a home where someone is around most of the day. Though he can be a bit skittish when first being leashed, he quickly relaxes and truly enjoys walks, car rides, and playdates with his small dog friends. Sherman is progressing nicely with house-training and does well on a consistent schedule.  He has gotten along well with cats but has not been tested with children. Due to his sensitive nature, he'd likely do best in a calm, adult-only home.
