She is a sweet, good-natured dog who loves people, and is good with children, cats, and other dogs. She occasionally encounters a young, aggressive dog who pesters her until she reacts, but her norm is to live amicably with and/or greet dogs on walks or in dog parks with eagerness, curiosity, and play. She’s very social. People in the neighborhood know her and kids love to come pet her as they pass by.
Likes and dislikes: Jade likes affection, attention, meeting new people, and being with you. With you at home, she's quite content. However, she has experienced trauma from being locked in a basement for extended periods. If crated and left alone—or trapped in a place where she feels abandoned—she can become highly anxious and destructive in an attempt to break free. Although I was told upon rescuing her that she was an escape artist, it took me going out of town and leaving her with others to discover this for myself. I can leave her alone, even for long stretches, but she does best uncrated, free to roam, and with access to a place for pottying.
Commands she knows: Sit, no, leave it, and sometimes lay down (with a little coaxing and reminding). She usually comes quickly when called by name. Hiking with her off-leash, she’s been trained to return to me quickly when called, even if she needs to be re-leashed. I periodically call her and make her come close enough to touch. So, if we come across horses, or other situations where she suddenly needs to be leased, she tends to come quite readily.
House trained: Yes, with some conditions. There are two situations that sometimes result in accidents. This can happen if she is left longer than she can manage (as she has aged, she needs more frequent potty breaks), or if she is experiencing anxiety or insecurity. For example, sometimes if there are a lot of people and things are chaotic, she may occasionally have an accident indoors rather than seeking to be let out. Usually, she is very good at getting my attention though. At night she is usually crated in my room.
Health issues: Jade recently had a complete health check. She was found to have a urinary tract infection, which has been treated with antibiotics. Otherwise, her bloodwork came back clean and she was found to be in good health. Jade is spayed.
Other things to know: Jade would thrive in a placement where her owners are mostly at home, she has free access to the outdoors, and she has opportunities to run free. She’s quite smart. With doorknobs that have a handle you push down to open, she is able to open doors herself, including those to the outside. If no one is home, she loves to investigate the garbage or help herself to any food left out on counters. She can be a bit mischievous! However, in general, she doesn’t chew things left out or do damage to furniture or belongings.
