He jumps with excitement when you peer into his kennel because more than anything he wants you to open that door and free him from his lockup. Shelters are loud and chaotic and kennels smelly, small and uncomfortable. You come to visit and bring hope of sunshine, grass, freedom and affection. As a young growing pup Duke didn’t get much direction to learn good manners and curb his excitement. But intelligent, sensitive shelter dogs like Duke learn quickly and with time and commitment repay their rescuer with appreciation, connection and obedience. He’s very, very trainable because he thrives on attention and praise for showing us good behaviour. He’s very treat motivated, which makes training easy and he’s a delight to be around.
