Hey, I’m Duke! German Shepherd | Just under 1 year old | 76 lbs
I’m a young, handsome boy looking for a fresh start!
I came to the shelter after being reported as a stray, and honestly, staff can’t believe no one came looking for me because I’m a REALLY good boy.
The first thing you’ll probably notice about me? Obviously, I’m ridiculously handsome.
The second? I’m a giant GOOFBALL with tons of personality.
I haven’t quite figured out that I’m a big dog yet. In my mind, I’m approximately 12 pounds and absolutely belong in your lap. If you sit down, don’t be surprised if I happily climb right on top of you for some butt scratches and lovin’.
I’m friendly, curious, happy-go-lucky and always interested in what’s going on around me. I’ve been friendly with the other dogs I've met here and staff expects me to do well with canine friends!
Cats, however, REALLY catch my attention. I'm very interested in them, but staff thinks I just want to play. Because of that, any interactions with cats should be closely monitored and supervised at first so I can learn appropriate boundaries and everyone stays safe.
I’m expected to do well with children, but remember... I’m a big, enthusiastic puppy who occasionally forgets just how big I am!
I’m potty trained and keep a clean kennel.
Overall, I could be a pretty easy addition to the RIGHT active family.
And that last part is important.
I may be handsome, funny and lovable, but please don’t choose me just because you’ve always wanted a German Shepherd. I’m still very young, and the work you put into me NOW will help determine the kind of dog I become.
German Shepherds are incredibly intelligent, loyal and energetic working dogs. I’m going to need plenty of physical exercise, mental stimulation, training, structure and continued socialization. I need to experience different people, places, animals and situations so I can grow into the confident, well-rounded adult dog I have every potential to become.
For me, those things aren’t optional.
My future family should be prepared to make them part of my life for the long haul. Experience with German Shepherds or other high-energy working breeds would be fantastic. If you don’t have that experience, that doesn’t necessarily rule you out, but staff strongly encourages you to thoroughly research my breed and understand the commitment before deciding I’m the dog for you.
Because I don’t just need someone who thinks I’m cute today. I need someone who is committed to the dog I’ll become tomorrow.
Give me the exercise, training, socialization and consistency I need, and in return, you could end up with one heck of a loyal best friend.
I want my next home to be my LAST.

Duke did test positive for Lyme Disease. He has been started on round of Doxycycline for treatment and received a Lyme Vaccine. It is highly recommended he receive a Lyme Vaccine yearly and be kept on tick/flea prevention year round.

Once submitted, staff will review your application during open hours. Please allow 24-36 hours for staff to review. If approved, we'll reach out to schedule a meet and greet! If you have other dogs, they'll need to come as well to ensure compatability. Some dogs may require all members of the household to come as well. If it’s a good fit, you may take your new best friend home that same day!
We also offer a 2-week foster-to-adopt trial period to ensure it’s the right match for everyone!
