I’m known for my big, goofy smile and even bigger heart. I’m house trained, well mannered, and full of personality. I’m also a bit of a talker, I love expressing my thoughts & being the center of attention! I showed up as a stray, so my past is a bit of a mystery. But one thing is clear:I absolutely LOVE humans. I’m affectionate, playful, goofy and bond deeply with people close to me. I’m truly a great dog, I'm just looking for a home without other dogs, cats or any small animals! I'm a natural hunter at heart. I can be friendly with other big dogs in passing and short introductions, but I think I'd do best as your one and only. I recently went to foster-to-adopt home with another big dog, but I think I prefer my own space. I'm Athena! I came into the shelter as a stray and my owners called and felt it was best they didn't reclaim me. True to my breed (shepherd mix) I have lots of energy and I'm very smart. That's part of the reason I ended up here. I kept getting loose, mostly breaking my tie outs. The lack of exercise and my need to expel my energy made for a dangerous situation because I kept getting bored and getting lose so my owners were afraid I would eventually get hit on the busy road they lived off of. I would prefer a home with a fence but this isn't a deal breaker if you are willing to train me (like I said I am very smart!) and be sure to give me plenty of exercise. Daily walks would be a must if you don't have a fenced in yard. I'm not the biggest on toys but I do like a good bone to chew. I had young kids in my home and I was happy living with them. I understand you will need to work and that's ok I am crate trained and speaking of trained I come potty trained! What more could you ask for, I'm young and willing to learn take a chance on me and you wont be disappointed. Meet Butterball a 2.5 year old shepherd mix who is ready to find his perfect home. With a rough start to life Butterball along with the other 7 dogs he came in with were left outside without proper food, water or shelter. Never knowing the feeling of a loving home or someone who truly cares for him he is ready to finally find someone to care for him the way he deserves. Butterball survived the only way he knew how and quickly learned to fight for every bit of food he could get so he now resources guards his food which makes him selective with other dogs. While his resource guarding with food may be better now that he is being feed every day, its best to assume he would be best in an only dog home or someone who can feed separate. Of course a meet and greet is required with any dogs going to go to a home to live with another dog. Come get Butterball out and take him for a walk and you will notice he is a happy go lucky guy who loves to love on his people.
