Story
Meet Smokey!
At just 6 months old, Smokey is ready to find the forever family he’s been waiting for.
Smokey is a handsome Weimaraner puppy with a huge personality, an even bigger heart, and enough energy to keep up with all of your adventures. He is crate trained, potty trained, walks beautifully on a leash, and loves being active. Whether it’s hiking, exploring trails, going for walks, or simply being wherever his people are, Smokey is happiest when he’s part of the action.
Smokey is looking for a home that understands the Weimaraner breed and is committed to providing the exercise, structure, and enrichment these intelligent, active dogs thrive on. He would do best with an active family that is excited to include him in their adventures.
Before coming into rescue, Smokey likely contracted a parasite from eating spoiled meat. Unfortunately, it appears to have affected his neurological system, resulting in head wobbling and rapid eye movements. The good news is that these symptoms have been improving with treatment, and Smokey continues to amaze us every day with his resilience and determination.
Because of his neurological signs, certain surfaces or new environments can take him a moment to navigate, but once he figures them out, he’s right back to being a happy, playful puppy. He doesn’t let it stop him from enjoying life, and neither should you.
Smokey has undergone extensive veterinary evaluation, including bloodwork and infectious disease testing. His results have been reassuring, and his veterinary team believes his neurological signs are likely lingering effects from a previous infection rather than an active disease process. He continues to improve on his current treatment plan and is doing wonderfully.
He is currently on medication, and we will provide his medications to help with the transition to his new home. His future family should be committed to continuing his treatment plan and routine veterinary follow-up as he continues to recover.
Because Smokey’s journey is a little unique, we would love to find a foster-to-adopt home where The Maine Dog Rescue can remain closely involved, helping both Smokey and his future family navigate the transition and ensuring everyone feels supported along the way.
Most importantly, Smokey doesn’t know he’s any different. He wants to hike, play, cuddle, learn, explore, and enjoy life just like any other young Weimaraner. He is affectionate, goofy, smart, adventurous, and full of life. Every day he proves that he is so much more than his diagnosis.
If you’re looking for a loyal adventure buddy and are willing to help this special boy continue to thrive, Smokey may be your perfect match.
