Meet Bubba, the adolescent bull dog mix! Bubba arrived at the Shelter as a stray so we do not know about his life before now. Staff have observed that he is a goofy boy who is exuberant and eager to get attention. He sometimes jumps up on people when excited but ultimately leans in and enjoys all the pets. Bubba met another bully-breed type dog at the Shelter and was eager to play – jumping on the dog and licking her face. If your dog is looking for an adolescent playmate, consider meeting Bubba today! Bubba is still perfecting life skills and manners such as potty training and leash walking so adopters should anticipate a little bit of puppy training with the reward of a fun new BFF. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Now through February 15th, all adoption fees are reduced to $33 - come to the Shelter today to adopt your very own Valentine!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Meet Ruby 💎 Ruby is an extremely sweet and loving girl. She loves her people so deeply and isn’t biased on who gets her love! A giant bucket of pure joy! She loves to chew her toys and indulge in her treats! Also has the endurance for short walks and loves to explore new things to sniff! But she takes a strong arm as she is learning to not pull still. Continuing training with her is ideal as she has some catching up to do! With proper introductions- she happily has lived with dogs before and still lives with cats! She does get overwhelmed with young children so we think it’s best that kids are older and respectful of animals. She is crate trained, potty trained and knows basic commands. The parts we know of her past is heartbreaking! She was rescued from the kill list at Devour Animal Shelter. She was obviously used as a breeder dog who had many litters with the c section scars to prove it! Her back leg muscles were weak and she had urine burns which means she didn’t get time out of a crate besides being bred. Due to her past, she takes time to trust that other dogs are her friends. Ruby has been vaccinated, microchipped and fixed! She is ready for her new home! Ruby is about 5 years old.

Foster, Adopt OR Foster-to-Adopt me! Sweet pittie Tito has beautiful eyes, a contagious grin… and a purr?    Tito is a gentle and healthy 2+ year-old boy.  He is potty-trained, walks on a loose leash, and knows sit, down, stay, come, shake & touch.  Tito loves the treats he gets when learning new tricks, so he is easy and fun to train.   Tito likes to spend most of his day snoozing, preferably with his head resting somewhere on your person.  He enjoys walks, but would rather burn off energy playing tug with you or wrestling with another dog.  This quiet boy rarely barks, but makes piggy snuffling sounds when he’s interested in or happy about something.  (When he’s relaxed, the snuffling sounds like a purr.  We think he’s a pittie-pig-cat hybrid.)   Tito loves befriending anyone who offers cuddles and a treat.  If you sit in his presence, you have invited him to climb onto your lap and kiss your face.  And then to lie down on your lap for a lengthy snooze, interrupted by brief breaks for more cuddles and kisses.   Tito loves all other dogs.  He was curious when introduced to a cat, but rapidly decided this was another nap-and-cuddle buddy.  We recommend Tito not live with children under 5; he loves kids, but doesn’t understand he’s too big to sit on their laps.  Tito needs a patient family that commits to positive training methods – this gentle boy needs spoiling, not discipline! Peggy is a 7-year-old, 39-pound American Bully/French Bulldog mix with a look as unique as her personality. From her wide-set elbows and muscular little legs to her docked ears and striking blue merle coat, she’s truly one of a kind. This sweet girl came to SVPP from the local shelter after being confiscated from a heartbreaking situation involving six other dogs. Despite spending years in difficult circumstances, Peggy has held onto her gentle, happy spirit and a deep desire to love and be loved. Peggy is housetrained and keeps a very reliable routine. She is crate trained, sleeps soundly in her crate all night, and does well staying crated when her humans are out. She has quickly discovered that snuggling on the couch is a wonderful way to spend an evening and is even starting to ask for scritches and attention. On leash, Peggy is still a novice, but she loves being out and about and is always ready to greet everyone she meets with her sweet smile and silly poses. And what does Peggy love most of all? TOYS! Stuffies are her absolute favorite at any time of day. She gives her toys her full attention and happily follows a good play session with a short, cozy nap.
