Are you looking for a shadow? A dog that will never be too far away from you? Do you want a dog that enjoys long walks because it allows lots of sniffs and meeting people? You just might be looking for Cardinal! This sweet, 6-year-old Cocker Spaniel is brimming with love for all humans, a surprising fact for a survivor of a puppy mill. Cardinal came to us healthy, but a little underweight, at about 20 lbs. But she is strong of body and of will!
Cardinal has beautiful, soft red hair that will flow in the wind. She will require regular grooming, but she has hair that will always look beautiful in between grooming sessions. Although her coat will stay beautiful, Cardinal does suffer from a common Spaniel condition - stinky ears. This condition is easily combated with regular maintenance from grooms and a solution that can be placed in the ear. Your vet will know all about it!
Cardinal has a very healthy relationship with food - her own and everyone else's! She enjoys having a longer-than-average body because it affords her the ability to counter surf and to steal anything left near the edge of the counter. She will also patrol the floor for any crumbs or morsels that may have escaped notice, and she will try to convince you that whatever is on your plate should be shared. Cardinal is learning that these behaviours are unacceptable, and her forever family will need to continue this training while also remembering to push tantalizing items away from the edge of the counter. If Cardinal is living with another dog, she must be separated when eating. Otherwise, she will eat her food, their food, and ask for more. Cardinal's enthusiasm for food does have one silver lining, though - she knows exactly where her food bowl is placed and will be there patiently waiting when mealtime arrives. She may be a food thief, but at least she is a polite one!
Cardinal is generally an easygoing and low-stress dog when her people are around. She does express her displeasure when one of her people has to leave the house. Cardinal has benefited from regular crating sessions, which have helped to build her confidence. She will usually be fine in her crate for a few hours. Cardinal currently sleeps in her crate through the night, although she would prefer to snuggle on the bed. Cardinal will require regular exercise to keep her stress low.
Cardinal enjoys long sessions exploring the backyard and going for long walks. She will change into hunter mode when a squirrel, bird, or cat appears. She would like to say hello to every other dog and human along the walk. Cardinal will simply melt into the body of the person giving her rubs, which will delay the completion of the walk. Cardinal is also starting to play with toys and will occasionally pick a favourite that she carries around the house.
Cardinal would do well in a calm but active household. She feeds off of the calm and enjoys the activity. Cardinal prefers to rest on throw rugs and mats on the floor, usually 1 meter away from a person. She does not insist on being a lap dog or snuggling on the couch. Cardinal loves people and will happily welcome visitors into the home, greeting them with enthusiasm and a wiggling body. She will quickly consider them part of her people and will expect rubs and attention from them accordingly! Cardinal would do well in a family with older teens or young adults. Cardinal has met younger children, but would not enjoy extended exposure. Cardinal currently has two foster dog siblings, and she gets along with them, but she will dominate for attention and she would like to be the only female dog in the home. Cardinal would be fine with a calm male dog if that dog is not an attention seeker. Cardinal can also be an only dog. She would not do well in a home with cats, birds, or any other small creatures.
Cardinal is mostly house trained, having learned from her Foster dog siblings, but will benefit from repeated and regular outside times. She does like to spend her time sniffing around, playing, and hunting before she relieves herself. The person outside with her must be patient and take her in too soon. She lived her first 6yrs solely in a barn getting no exercise or stimulation so she likes to take advantage of all the outdoor time she can get now!! Cardinal appears to have selected a “spot” for her “business” in the yard, so it may be possible to train her to use one location in the yard.
Cardinal is still learning to walk on a leash and some regular leash manners, but she is improving. She does pose a door dash risk, so being very aware of her or having her on a leash before opening the door is advised. Although Cardinal is doing well with her confidence building, as a mill dog she is still getting used to the world outside of a barn and sudden noises, or fast moving things like bikes whizzing by can scare her. She will jump backwards and then start running away when spooked. Using a Martingale collar with her leash will ensure she cannot escape your grip.
Cardinal is learning to sit on command, but this is in the early stages of training. She does know, however, exactly where her food bowl is put down and is there patiently waiting. If Cardinal is living with another dog, she must be separated when eating. Otherwise, she will eat her food, their food, and ask for more food.
Cardinal is great in the car if safely buckled in the back seat. She will watch her surroundings change as she travels and will be prepared for an adventure when she arrives. She will burst out of the car with delighted energy upon arrival. Be prepared to catch!
This is just the sweetest dog looking for the security of a loving forever home. She is an easy keeper and with a bit more training and socialization you will never know that she started life in a puppy mill. She is a brave dog and can’t wait to take on more of the world around her. She just needs a trusted person or family to go on adventures with!! Could that be you?
