Sherwin (male)2 years - Australian Shepherd - straySherwin was running at large for months. He's a flight risk so potential adopters will have to build trust and supervise him. Foster Update:Warning Long Post!!!! I have been foster Sherwin for the New Nodaway Humane Society for about 5 weeks now he is up for adoption but please Read The Whole Post this is not a dog just anyone can take on!!!! Sherwin came in as a very scared guy and will more than likely need life long work even dog training, his biggest fear is people he wants love but unfortunately someone at some time in his life traumatized him and it effected him deeply. He loves having dog friends he actually would do best in a home with another dog, but is kinda looking for dog friends that are bouncy and fun loving. He does well with both my dogs but unfortunately they are the rough housing and very vocal kinda pups and that can be a bit much for Sherwin, I also have two cats in the home and he does fine with them but is very timid around them. In the 5 weeks that Sherwin has been here he has went from needing carried outside, not eating, and cowering in fear, To walking tentatively on leash off property for short distances ( still gets scared by noises and people), eating a normal amount of food, he will even ask to be petted from time to time. If you are interested in adopting Sherwin you have to understand he will more than likely always need kept on leash or tie out even inside a fenced in yard cause he does get very distracted and skittish outside and will run from you, a privacy fence might be best for him but I would still suggest keeping him on lead for awhile as he will need to make a connection with anyone new in his world. Even though Sherwin scares easily he has never shown any aggression but I do not think he would do well with hyper or energetic kids because of his fears, if your child is on the quieter calmer side that would be best for him. I have seen no food aggression, I have even reached in his kennel and taken his bowel of food while he ate with no reaction from him. My own dogs have even taken treats from him with no reaction from him, I only feed him in a locked kennel because my dogs would eat all his food??. Sherwin is house and kennel trained, he does pee and poop when he is extremely scared so this needs kept in mind for the first week or so after adoption, he rides well in a car. Please also understand do to Sherwin's past trauma he may never get past all his fears but with time and patients he does warm up.
