Story
Dog Name: RumRum
Breed: French Bulldog
Sex: male
Age: ~5 years
Weight: ~30 lbs
Medical Needs: French bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed. This means RumRum needs to be watched when exercising, especially on hot days, to ensure he is breathing properly. RumRum also has a cherry eye, which is the result of a prolapsed gland in his third eyelid. He has had this ever since he was very little, and it has not changed in size or severity. It does not appear to bother or hinder him at all. A quick look by a vet at his annual checkups just to make sure it isn’t changing should be all it requires. RumRum will also need his eye folds maintained - wiped out and wrinkle paste applied regularly to keep them clean and healthy.
Housebroken: Yes. But he does not signal when he needs to go out. We let him out frequently. If he gets up without you and disappears to another room, you should go let him out. If he is out of his crate, he is rarely not in the same room as you. He has peed in the house a couple times because we weren’t paying close enough attention.
Crate trained: Yes. RumRum goes right into his crate for a treat. He is good for 8+ hours in his crate and has never had an accident in there. He will whine, bark, and howl if he hears a noise or knows you’re in the house, but he settles down eventually.
Good in the car: Yes. He likes to lie down in the back seat and sleep.
Good on a leash: Yes.
Energy level: Medium. RumRum will trot around the yard exploring. He’ll also sprint really hard for a couple minutes if playing with another dog. Then he’s ready to go inside and cuddle on the couch. But his cuddling is very active and squirmy at first. He’ll roll around on his back and climb ALL over your lap (and couch). Once he’s got his wiggles out, he’ll settle on your lap to sleep (and snore).
Need a fenced-in yard: Yes. RumRum likes his own space to explore freely.
Dog Friendly: Yes. RumRum loves dogs of all sizes. He is a little hesitant when he first meets larger dogs and might snap to tell them they’re too close. But he will warm up eventually.
If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive home?
Yes. RumRum loves his foster siblings. He plays with them, snuggles them, and grooms them. He has always lived with at least one other dog and is more comfortable with another dog around.
Cat Friendly: Yes.
Kid Friendly: Yes.
If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with?
When RumRum is excited, he likes to lick faces and jump up to get as close to you as possible. He can also be mouthy when he is excited. It is not aggressive biting in any way. He is simply so excited to see you that he ends up putting his mouth around your hand. For these reasons, I recommend taller kids 12+ who can handle a little dog jumping on them and won’t get knocked over, punched in the face, or frightened by his mouthiness.
Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them?
To be very honest, RumRum is not the kind of dog that is going to love you as soon as he meets you. He’s going to be shy, wary, and toned down. But it also won’t take long for him to warm up to you - a couple hours to a day maybe. You’ll need to follow the two-week shut down to allow him to acclimate and build a bond with you. Once he knows, loves, and trusts you, he won’t leave your side. He will be your shadow. You’ll also start to see his nuttiness. He cracks me up every single day with his floppy ears, constant piggy noises, and single crooked tooth directly in the center of his bottom jaw. He is very sweet and just wants to love you and for you to love him!
