Congratulations! You are about to learn everything you need to know about operating one Franz Joseph Haydn. Don't let the distinguished name fool you into expecting a sophisticated gentleman who spends his afternoons discussing classical music and sipping tea. That was a clerical error. This model actually runs on happiness and the firm belief that every single day deserves its own celebration. Wake up? Best day ever. Breakfast? Best day ever. You looked in his general direction? Somehow... still the best day ever. Franz approaches life with the enthusiasm of someone who has never once encountered a bad day and fully intends to keep that streak alive. He doesn't overthink things. He doesn't hold grudges. He simply wakes up each morning ready to conduct another masterpiece called "The Symphony of Being Absolutely Delighted to Exist." So while his name may belong in a concert hall, his personality belongs in your living room, your backyard, your passenger seat, and probably directly in your personal space. He's less "renowned 18th-century composer" and more "golden retriever energy trapped in whatever body he happened to be born with." And honestly? We think Haydn himself would approve. After all, every great symphony deserves a happy ending.
Of course, every great masterpiece has an origin story, and Franz's didn't exactly begin with a standing ovation. This happy little conductor is a 4-month-old, 24-pound, possible English Shepherd mix who somehow found himself sitting in an overcrowded shelter. Which, frankly, is about as believable as finding sunshine having a bad day. Unfortunately, shelters don't always have the luxury of waiting for the perfect family to come along. This particular shelter was critically overcrowded, and they were quickly approaching the point where they would have to make an absolutely heartbreaking decision... one that included Franz. Thankfully, the universe decided Franz's symphony wasn't anywhere close to its finale. A wonderful foster family stepped forward, raised their hand, and said, "We've got him." Just like that, his story changed from one that could have ended far too soon to one filled with squeaky toys, soft beds, belly rubs, and the opportunity to find the family he was always meant for.
Now, every orchestra needs a supporting cast, and Franz has apparently decided that everyone he meets has already been cast in his production. Other dogs? Oh, excellent. More musicians for the ensemble. Franz isn't just friendly with other dogs—he's the one organizing the after-party. Whether they're ready or not is a completely different discussion, but Franz firmly believes every dog is just one tail wag away from becoming his newest best friend. Humans don't fare much differently. Strangers? Never heard of them. Franz has apparently concluded that every person he meets has simply been delayed in arriving to his fan club. He's a full-fledged social butterfly who greets new faces with the confidence of someone walking onto a stage where the audience has already given him a standing ovation. Cats, however... well... the jury is still rehearsing that number. There's a cat in his foster home, and Franz has expressed his opinions by barking at it. We can't say whether he's attempting to introduce himself, critique the cat's complete lack of participation in the performance, or simply wondering why this oddly shaped audience member refuses to applaud. The cat, unsurprisingly, has declined to comment. As for children, Franz hasn't had the opportunity to meet any yet, so that chapter of his musical career is still waiting to be written. But if his enthusiasm for literally everyone else is any indication, we'd expect him to arrive ready to make friends... probably before anyone has officially introduced themselves.
Of course, every good conductor needs a healthy amount of energy to keep the performance moving, and Franz has plenty to spare. We'd rate him a solid 8 out of 10 on the energy scale, which translates to, "Let's go do something!" followed by, "Okay, now I'm ready to cuddle." Adventure? Absolutely. Franz didn't get the memo about being a couch potato. He's much more interested in seeing what's around the next corner, splashing through the nearest puddle, and making sure no hiking trail, park, or neighborhood walk goes unexplored. If your idea of a good time involves getting outside, Franz has already grabbed his imaginary backpack. Speaking of adventures... let's discuss transportation. Franz hops into the car without hesitation, because of course he does. The ride begins with the enthusiasm of a fan who just got front-row tickets to their favorite concert. And when it's time to play? Oh, he's all in. Toys are fantastic. Water is even better. If there's an opportunity to splash around, expect Franz to volunteer as tribute. Fetch, on the other hand... well... Franz appreciates that you enjoy throwing things. He just isn't entirely convinced it's his responsibility to return them. After all, someone has to supervise your throwing technique, and he's generously taken on that role.
By now you've probably gathered that Franz was not designed to be an ornamental throw pillow. He has places to go, friends to make, puddles to splash in, and very important neighborhood business to attend to. Because of that, we'd really love to see him with a securely fenced yard where he can stretch those legs, burn off some zoomies, and continue his self-appointed duties as Chief Happiness Officer. Could he eventually learn to enjoy regular leash walks? Absolutely. But at this stage of his career, having a safe place to run and play is going to make everyone a little happier... especially the human on the other end of the leash. He doesn't know any official commands yet, and he's still working on this whole potty-training business. But let's be fair—he's only four months old. Expecting a puppy to arrive fully trained is a little like expecting a toddler to file your taxes. He's at the perfect age to soak up new lessons, and with a little patience (and a generous supply of treats), he'll be eager to learn. One area where Franz deserves an unexpected round of applause? His kennel manners. When it's bedtime or his humans head out, Franz happily retires to his private dressing room (his kennel). He might offer a brief opening statement—just enough to let everyone know he'd much rather continue the festivities—but hand him a treat, his beloved stuffed baby, and he'll settle in beautifully. If another dog starts singing the song of their people, Franz is happy to provide backup vocals. If the resident cats wander by, he'll happily offer his completely unsolicited commentary on their performance as well. Fortunately, his barking isn't driven by fear or anxiety—he's simply an enthusiastic participant in neighborhood discussions. At the end of the day, though, that's what makes Franz so incredibly lovable. He's a pint-sized bundle of sunshine who wakes up every morning convinced life is wonderful. He loves splashing in the water, playing with his dog friends, making new human friends, and finding joy in just about everything around him. He's the kind of puppy who reminds you not to take life too seriously because there's always another adventure waiting just outside the door. And really... every family deserves a little more music, a few more laughs, and someone who's this excited to greet each new day.
So, if you've finished reading the Official Franz Joseph Haydn Owner's Handbook and have reached the completely reasonable conclusion that your home is missing one overly enthusiastic, water-loving, joy-filled conductor, here's what happens next. You'll need to fill out an adoption application. Yes, paperwork. I know. The true villain of every great story.
Once you submit it, our people will send your application to Franz's foster family because they're the ones who know him best and will choose the home that's the best fit for him—not simply the first application that arrives. Franz deserves his perfect encore. If you're selected, you'll then need to make the trip to Hutchinson, Kansas to pick him up in person.
