Shelter FAQs

The Humane Society of Northwest Iowa is a 501(c)3 non-profit animal shelter that proudly serves Dickinson, Clay, Emmet, Palo Alto, O'Brien, and Osceola counties. Our mission is to promote the ethical and humane treatment of all animals, as well as provide care, housing, and rehabilitation for animals in need while they are with us, and promote responsible pet ownership by educating on the importance of spaying or neutering animals.
We serve Dickinson County in Iowa along with the five surrounding counties with city/county contracts for Milford, Arnolds Park, Dickinson, and Spirit Lake Iowa.

Adoption steps

  1. Submit Application
    1. This is currently done virtually. Click apply to adopt to get to our website, and select Applications at the top of our homepage.
  2. Approve Application
  3. Visit the Facility and Find a Pet
  4. Sign Adoption Contract
  5. Pay Fee
  6. Take the Pet Home
