Rescue FAQs

In addition to finding new homes for our dogs, we are also very dedicated to educating the public about the responsibilities that comes with owning a dog of this breed. All too often people acquire a puppy or adult dog without knowing enough about what to expect and end up finding that they cannot handle it. This is one reason why Dutch Shepherds end up homeless. We know that with proper education and support we can better ensure that fewer Dutchies end up in shelters and that those who have recently added a DS to their family can find a place to turn when they need help. We became incorporated on January 11th of 2006 as the need for an organized rescue group became more and more apparent. Since our inception we have placed more than 50 dogs, which is a lot considering the fact that the Dutch Shepherd is a rare breed. As time goes on, we hope to be able to expand our volunteer base and our treasury so that we may continue to help more dogs in need.
Our mission is to place rescued dogs into loving permanent homes, to educate the public about the breed, to promote responsible pet care and to provide advice and training tips to adopters of the breed. North American Dutch Shepherd Rescue is a foster based organization. We do not operate a shelter facility; all of our dogs live in a home environment until a permanent home is found. The temperament and behavior of each dog is carefully evaluated while they are in foster care so that we can match each dog with the home that is best suited to meet their unique needs. Our organization operates and functions through a group of dedicated volunteers throughout the US. Each individual has a unique personality and skill to help in the rescue of Dutch Shepherds.
